In a safety device for containing broken wheels, it
is known that a cable system wrapped around the
wheels will stop them from leaving the
undercarriage. These cables will be guided by fixed
rigid supports, stationary to the equipment. The
cables will have secure eyelets on each measured to
a pre-determined length. Turnbuckles will be
required to tighten the cables and have adaquate
thead length to compensate for cable sag. The
application of this WHEELTAINER will vary on
equipment, being that all equipment is not a
standard size throughout the industry. The cables
will have sufficient tire clearance to avoid either
cable or tire damage. Cables should be manufactured
from a non-corrosive type material such as
stainless steel and installed at equal spacing on
the side of the wheel (see drawing). The corner
supports will be round pipe, half-round guides will
be welded to them where the cable turns the
corner. The guides will hold the cable in place and
prevent it from sliding up and down pipe. The
other fixed supports can be square pipe with
drilled holes to guide the cables and will be
located between the wheels.
