English Abstract

In a safety device for containing broken wheels, it
is known that a cable system wrapped around the
wheels will stop them from leaving the
undercarriage. These cables will be guided by fixed
rigid supports, stationary to the equipment. The
cables will have secure eyelets on each measured to
a pre-determined length. Turnbuckles will be
required to tighten the cables and have adaquate
thead length to compensate for cable sag. The
application of this WHEELTAINER will vary on
equipment, being that all equipment is not a
standard size throughout the industry. The cables
will have sufficient tire clearance to avoid either
cable or tire damage. Cables should be manufactured
from a non-corrosive type material such as
stainless steel and installed at equal spacing on
the side of the wheel (see drawing). The corner
supports will be round pipe, half-round guides will
be welded to them where the cable turns the
corner. The guides will hold the cable in place and
prevent it from sliding up and down pipe. The
other fixed supports can be square pipe with
drilled holes to guide the cables and will be
located between the wheels.

Claims

CLAIMS
The embodiments of the invention in which an
exclusive property or privilege is claimed are
defined as follows.
A In a case of a safety device
1 A cable invention named (WHEELTAINER) that will
prohibit loose wheels from being thrown free into
traffic and pedestrians.
2 A safety device that is difined in claim 1 in
which cables attached to truck, trailer, or similar
equipment will contain broken wheels to the
undercarriage of the unit until the operator brings
it to a stop.
3 A safety device that is defined in claim 1 or
2, It is a fact that people have been killed from
loose wheels. This WEELTAINER seen on transport-trucks
will make people feel safer as they travel
on the highways.

Description

Note: Descriptions are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

March 21 1997
WHEELTAINERS ~ 2 0 0 7 8 4
Tae Wheeltainer will retain individual and dual wheels
on Trucks and Trailers, in the event of wheel failure.
The Wheeltainer device will completely wrap around all
Truck and Trailer wheels.Trailer-Trains will need separate
systems to allow for movement.
Cable tighteners will be placed at the rear of Truck and
Trailer and will have easy access to release for mainten-
ance purposes.
Corner anchors will be 3"pipe with 5/16 wall or equivalent,
and have elbows installed. They will be cut and fitted in the
field
Cable spacing will be determined by wheel position and
size.
All welding will be complete and applied with C.W.B.(Can-
adian Welding Bureau) approved welding rod # 7018.
Bracing and reinforcing supports will be field fit and
angle iron may be practical.
Each cable will have 1 Thimble and 1 Clevis on each end
allowing the tighteners to tighten the cable properly.
Cable guide supports will be field fit with 1" pipe and
1/2 slot cut along the full length so the cable can be
removed.2ll tubing can be used for supports to prevent sag-
ging. The 1" pipe will be installed towards the frame.
.. . .
Another option is to have the cables on the front and
back of the Trailer attached to welded lugs on the corner
post with Clevises, and 3 separate tightening devices on
each side of the Trailer with Clevises on each end of the
Trailer with Clevises on each end of t~e cables connected
to welded lugs on the anchor post.
