English Abstract

This is a device for displaying a product for sale. It consists of two pieces, a base
and a back, hinged together and held apart by flexible braces. The stand is thusself contained and stable, and can be made of such material as to complement theitem displayed.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

CLAIM
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A display stand in the form of an assembly consisting of
back and base of durable material, joined by one or more
hinges, and secured in their erected position by easily
removable flexible rods which, when the assembly is erected,
are inserted at their ends into holes or sockets in base and
back near their sides; the rods being of such length that,
when the erected assembly lies upon its base, the back is
vertical or nearly vertical and inclined away from the front.
2. A stand defined in claim 1 slotted or grooved in the base,
parallel to the front and back edges at one or more
intermediate longitudinal points, so as to retain the items
to be displayed and thus prevent their falling over as they
become depleted.
3. A stand defined in claim 1 or claim 2 into which is
secured, by adhesive or otherwise, a cord or other stopping
material attached on the top side of the base near and
parallel to the front edge thereof, so as to retain the
items to be displayed when the display is full or nearly so.
4. A stand defined in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 into
which a slot is made in the top edge of the back so as to
secure a placard.

Description

Note: Descriptions are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

Speciftcation
This invention relates to a compact unit for displaying a product for sale.
Most compact product displays are made from box board paper. Compact product
displays which are made of wood, plastic, or metal often require assembly with
tools, such as wrenches and screw drivers, which the purchasing retailer must
use
for screws or nut-and-bolt assemblies. Some compact product displays are
simply
boxes that, when open, serve to display the product inside but do not afford a
good view of the contents.
In this invention, no tools are required for the retailer to assemble the
display unit,
and the product contained within the display unit is afforded maximal
visibility to
potential consumers.
Of the drawings enclosed which illustrate an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1
is a front view of the device, and Figure 2, a side view. Figure 2 illustrates
slots,
hinges, holes, and braces used.
The concept of the invention is simply to hinge together two pieces of
material
which, when opened, form a base and a back; the material, which is of relative
thickness according to the size of the display required, when opened form a
base
for the displayed product. These we will call the display base ( 1 ) and
display back
(2). Hinging the two pieces of material together serves two purposes: first,
when
opened, the hinges (4) act to keep the rear of the display back (2) flush with
the
rear edge of the display base ( 1 ); second, the hinges (4) allow the display
back (2)
and display base ( 1 ) to be folded together neatly into a compact position
for
boxing and transport.

~J
In the open position, the bottom of the display back (2) is cut at an angle
(approximately seven degrees) so product leaning against the display back (2)
may
be more visible to potential customers.
Holes (5) are drilled into the outer edges of the display base (1) to allow
flexible
rods (3) to be placed into the holes (5) and bent so as to be even with holes
(S)
which are drilled in the corresponding positions into the display back (2) of
the
product display unit. The flexible rods (3) can then be pushed into the holes
(5) in
the display back (2) and will serve to exert force upon this piece of
material,
thereby bracing the two pieces of material ( back (2) and base ( 1 ) ) in the
sturdy
fashion.
The flexible rods (3) also serve to retain the retail product within the
confines of
the display base (1) by forming curved rails at the sides of the product
display
between the base (I) and back (2) of same.
On the base ( 1 ) of the product display are cut two shallow slots (7) & (8)
which
run from side to side across the entire base. From the rear of the display
base (1),
where it meets the display back (2), the first slot (7) is cuts approximately
one
quarter of the distance to the front leading edge of the display base ( 1 ).
This slot
(7) is to ensure that, as the product is depleted, it does not fall flat onto
the base
{ 1 ), but rather will fetch up in the slot and remain in an upright position.
The
second slot (8) is cut close to the front leading edge on the display base (I)
and is
cut so the slot (8) runs just in front of the drilled holes (5) which are
closest to the
front leading edge of the display base ( 1 ). This slot (8) is cut at such a
distance
from the holes (5) that a piece of material, i.e., wood strip, rope, plastic
strip, etc.,
may be glued or otherwise secured along the slot (8), using slot (8) as a
gutter for
the applied glue or other securing material. The material glued or otherwise
secured over this slot (8) acts as a device to retain the retail product
within the
confines of the display base ( 1 ) at the front of the product display unit.

_3_
When open, the display back (2) has a slot (6) cut down the center of its top
side.
This slot (6) is cut from side to side of the display through the material to
a depth
which will provide stability for a display board that is created for
promotional
purposes for the product on display. The display board would simply slide into
the
slot (6) at the top of the display back (2) and be of such thickness as to
accommodate a comfortable fit and may be of any height, so long as the
stability of
the display unit is not upset by air currents. Generally speaking, this should
not be
a problem, because of the low center of gravity inherent in the design of the
display.
CA 02206249 1997-06-10

COMPACT COLLAPSIBLE PRODUCT DISPLAY
The display back will consist of one piece of chosen material of size
suitable to the chosen product. The bottom edge (edge which will meet display
base) is beveled at about 7°, and four (4) holes of suitable size to
accommodate
braces are drilled - 2 on a side, parallel to the sides of the piece.
The back is hinged to a base of similar or complementary material and
shape. The base also has four drilled holes, placed similarly to those on the
back.
In addition, the base contains two shallow slots - one cut across about 40% of
the
way forward from the hinges, and the other just in front of the forward set of
drilled holes. A decorative stop is to be glued or otherwise secured into the
front
slot. Hinging the two major pieces eliminates the need for extra tools for
assembly.
Flexible but strong material, such as rattan or plastic tubing, is used for
braces. These are bent into arcs, and are fitted into the drilled holes on
base and
back. Tow arcs on each side, one inside the other, hold stable base and back,
and
can lend visual appeal. The material used for these should complement base and
back, while conforming to the needs for the design.
The slot along the top of the display back is cut straight across to
accommodate a display placard for the chosen product, eliminating the need for
other fasteners and tools.
The front edge of the base allows space for company or product logo.
