FT~.D OF INV~NTIO~
This invention relates to an element for a rolling s~and,
S and alsc~ the rolling stand o~tained with this elemen~, as
set forth in the respective main clai~s
~ ore .in particular, the invention refer~ to a ~odular
element to obtain a finishing stand or a post-finishing
stand i~ a rolling line.
~he invention also refe~s to a fLnishing or post-f;ni~in~
stand obtained with one or more pairc of ele~ents according
to t~e invention.
The i~Lvention is applied in the field of hot rolling of
thin p~.oducts, h~ving rounded, squared, hexagonal,
rect~ngular, or other transversal section, of a nominAl
diameter or transversal ~ ion between 4 and 16 mm,, made
of stee'L and parti~ularly during the finishins and post-
fini$h;n~ steps which precede the arrival of the product on
the coil.-forming head o~ before the cooling bed or coolin~
ke~t
~ACKG~OUND OF 1~ INVENTION
The state o~ the art e~rs post-finishing stands with two
or four rolling passes to obtain the desired finish to the
hot rolled products having a thin section normally of
between 4 and 16 mm
~ uring this rolling step, the real obtainable rolling
speed di.ffers ~rom the theoreticdl rolling speed for a lot
of reasons.
In the s~ate of the art, it is }~nown to carr~ out the pre-
finishing pA~5~ whe~e the reduction has a fixed or variablesizing, whereas the last two or more ~inishin~ or post-
finishin,g passes are with a variable sizing and de~ine the
iinal iorm of the product, which can possibly be

dive~sified
~ n the present state of the art, while the theoretical
speeds is of 120-130 mJsec , the re~l speed ~ s no more then
105~110 m/sec
Sta~e of the art post-finishing rolling stands have
~ollin~ rol}s or rolling rings with a m; nimllm diamete~ of
between 160 and 190 mm and necessarily need guide boxes to
guide the rolled product both at the inlet and at the outlet
of the r-elative rolling rings~rolls.
miS i.s ~ecause the center distance between two stands, or
b~L~e ~ two subseguent post-finishing passes, cannot at the
present time go below 650~7~0 mm.
As a consequence of ~his considerable distance ~etween two
contiquous passes, th~ guide boxes are necessar~; however,
due to pro~lems of rotation, centring and interfe~ence w~th
the rol:Led stock, they l mi t the real rolling speed, as we
h2Lve said
Docum~Lt ~S-A-~L .78~.653 proposes a rolling stand with two
rolls which pivot horizontally around their axis of fee~, in
order to increase the ro~lLng speed.
Although this proposal is valid, it does not solve the
~J prohl~m at all, first~y due to the presen~e of the axis of
~ee~ an~ also due to ~he fact that it is not possible to
include, on ~he same structure, another pass rotated by 90~,
2~ except with conside~able constructional and operational
complexi.~ies .
Moreo~er, even if~ there were a further pass, it would be
too dist:ant to allow the boxes to guide the rolled stock to
be el;m; n~ted.
~ocument ~Neues Draht- und neues Mittelstahlwalzwerk fur
die ~kraine~, Rolf Schenke, 2g54 Draht, vol. 44, no. 12, 1
Decembe:r 1993, describes a rolling plant for wire rods,
wherein the rolling stands have the rolling rolls

cantile-vered mounted ~nd o~fsec with respect to th~
correSpon~;ng~ drivin~ shafts. In this document nothing is
tau~ht ,about the variability of the dist~nce of rolling
rolls wi.th respect to the rolling z~ s and z~bout the redu~ed
center ~listance between the rolling rolls of the rolling
stands, whereby the z~bove mentioned problems zlre not solved
Document ~P-A-~?-190703 descri~es a rolling stand
constituted by two groups, each having a rollin~ roll
cantile~Jered mounted on a cor~espo~ding support flange
~, 10 rigidly fixed to a driv~g box on which a drivinç~ motor is
mounted.. In this document, wherein each rolling roll is
of~set with respect to the Z~KiS of the motor, for varying
the distance between the rolling rolls, one entire group, is
moved wn.~h respeck to the other, i~cluding the driving box
and the motor,
Docu~ent DE-A-29 lS 295 describes z rolling stz~nd with
cz~ntilet~ered mounted rolling rolls for the production of
wire rods, wherein a single motor causes the rotation of
three ~roups of rolling rolls disposed at 120~ one with
respect to the others In this document each group of
rolling rolls is swinging with respect to the driving axis
by m~z~nc of complex and expensive ac~uating hydraulic
cylinders.
Document GB-A-50~,456 des~ribes a ~ery old ~ystem for
re~ulating the distance between the rolling rolls of a
rolling starld, constituted h~ two autonomous groups, wherein
each group is slidably mounted on a ~ixed ~rame and wherein
the roll.ing rolls are cz~ntilevered mounted and offset with
respect to the driv~ng mez~ns Al~o in this system, for
~a~ying the distz~nce between the rolling rolls, the two
groups are reciprocally mo~ed with respect to the ~ixed
frame, whereby the ~ystem i~self is cumbersome and
unsuitable, and does not sol~e the problem of the reduced

cente~ distance between the rolling rolls.
The present applicant has therefore designed and tested
this invention, which ove~ the limitations of the state
of the art, ~nd makes it possible to obtain finishing
5 sta~ds, wi~ch one or mo:re pa~;ses, w~ich work at a much higher
speed than that which can be obtained at present.
SU~RY 0~ ;N'l'10..
The i:nvention is set forth and characterised in the
respective main cla~m~ while the dep~n~nt claims describe
~ 10 variants of the idea of che main f~im~.nt
Accordiing to the invention, a mDd~lar element is included
which bears rolling rolls or rings with a m; ni ~llm diameter
of abou~ 70 mm and a maximum diameter of about 1so mm.
~ ceordLing to the invention, i~ is advantageous to include
a range o~ diameters of the rolling roll/ring of between
about 90 mm and about }10 mm
Accord~ing to the invention, the axis kearing the rollin~
roll/ring is borne offset by a disc or ring type flange
which can rotate aro~nd its own axis and allows the
roll/ring-bearing shi~~t, whic~ is parallel tO the axis of
rotatio~;L of ~he flange, to rotate describing at least a a:rc
o~ a ci~ct~mference.
~ he roll/ri~g-bearing sh~ft is supplied with motion by a
gear whic~ is coa~Qal to the axis of rotation of ~he ~lange.
According to a variant, the gear which carries the motic~n
coa~ial to the flange receives motion directly ~rom a
kinematic motion c~mon to all the elP~A~ts of the stand
~ ccord~ny to another variant, each elemen~ receives motion
~rom i~s own drive device.
Accorcling to another variant. ~he gear which c~rries the
motion c:oaxial to the ~lange receives motion from a pair o~
~apered gears which is made to rotate by a common kinematic
motion.

CA 02238063 1998-05-20
With this invention, two rolling rings or rolls can be
m~de to coo~e~ate so ~s to constitute a finishin~ stand or
pass, with the respective support boxes or shaft-bea~i3rlg
elements on which the fl~ng~s are positioned, without there
being a~ly inter~erence hetween the boxes themselves; the
boxes are thus facing each othe~, offset and inverted w~th
the axes of the rolling rolls or rin~s o~fset but parallel
therebet~een
With the present invention, in the ~ree areas between the
two elements or support boxes which carry the respe~tive
rolls or rings to cons~itute a rolling pass, it is possible
to place two other elements, in or~er to obtain another
rolling pass with a ~inimAl center distance ~rom ~he
previous pass
With the present invention it is therefore possible to
obtain one or more finishing rolling p~sses with a m;n;mllm
center clistance hetween a~out 130 and about 450 mm with
regards to size.
It is within the scope of the present invention to include
~ m;n;ml~m center ~istance b~tween about 140 mm and a~out 250
., mm. .
Accord.ing to the va~ïant which includes the pair of
tapered ~ears, it is possible to include a single so~rce of
motion, placed verticall.y ~or example, with four or more
outle~s to be connected to the respective support boxes, ~s
the outlets are substant;~lly parallel to the rolling axis
The scurce of motion, fo~ ~xample, including a ~ertical
plate wi.~h the desired kinematic chain or reduction unit
inside, may include on one face two outlets which are
connected to two elements according to the invention so as
to co~st:itute a first fit~ish;n~ pass.
According to a variant, on the sa~e face the sour~e of
motion 3nay include two plus two outlets so that four

-- 6 ---
elements according ~o the invention (two plus ~wo) may be
installed so as to co~stitute two suceessi~e finishing
p~sses
Acco~ding to another variant, on the other face it is
possible to obtain respectively two or four outlets so that
with a single plate as many as ~our finishing passes may be
oh~
The el.emen~s according to the present in~ention include
means to position them rapidly on the motion means.
- 10 It is th~s possible to ch~nge each individual element
rapidly so as tc facilitate not only main~enance operations
but ~lso equipping operations and operations to change
me~sur~ts.
According to the invention, in a side ~iew, the element is
- 15 ~hAr~ like a 'P~, with the rolling roll or ring mounted on
the lower t~in~l ~nt;;l o~ the leS~ of ~he ~P".
BR3~EF DEScRlPTION OF I~D~ D~ noNG
