English Abstract

The invention disclosed relates to a method for enhancing the granulation rate
of suspended anaerobic sludge. The method comprises the incremental additions
to the sludge over a period of time of a cationic synthetic e.g.
polyacrylamide polymer or a natural e.g. chitosan polymer. The method was
performed in laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB)-like reactors
operated under similar conditions over a period of 5 weeks. A total of 4
injections was carried out, during the entire course of this study. The
results showed that supplementation of the reactors with polymers, either the
natural or the synthetic, enhanced the granulation compared to that in the
control reactors (without the use of polymers). The polymers did not cause any
inhibition to biomass activity. Furthermore, the granules specific activities
were enhanced in the reactors supplemented with both polymers compared to
those in the control reactors.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

CLAIMS:

1. A method for enhancing the granulation rate of anaerobic sludge
suspended in water in a bioreactor, comprising the incremental addition to the
suspended sludge of a suitable polymer over a period of time, whereby the rate
of granulation of the sludge is enhanced.

2. A method according to Claim 1, wherein the polymer is selected from
cationic natural and synthetic polymers.

3. A method according to Claim 2, wherein the polymer is a
polysaccharide.

4. A method according to Claim 2, wherein the polymer is chitosan.

5. A method according to Claim 2, wherein the polymer is polyacrylamide.

6. A method according to Claim 2, wherein a carbon source is present.

7. A method according to Claim 4, wherein the pH is from 4 to 6.7.

28

8. A method according to Claim 4, wherein the pH is about 6.7.

9. A method according to Claim 6, wherein four weekly incremental
additions of polymer are effected over a five week period.

10. A method according to Claim 6, wherein the polymer is chitosan and
the incremental additions are about 25 mg/g of suspended sludge.

11. A method according to Claim 6, wherein the polymer is polyacrylamide
and the incremental additions are about 2 mg/g of suspended sludge.

12. A method according to Claim 6, wherein the sludge is a biomass from
wastewater.

13. A method according to Claim 12, wherein the wastewater includes trace
metals.

14. A method according to Claim 6, wherein the bioreactor is an upflow
anaerobic bed reactor.

29

15. A method according to Claim 9, wherein after each incremental addition
of polymer, the suspension is agitated.

16. A method according to Claim 15, wherein initially the agitation is at a
high rate for about one minute, followed by a low agitation rate for about
three
minutes.

17. A method according to Claim 6, wherein the method is continuous.

18. A method according to Claim 6, wherein the carbon source comprises
ethanol and sucrose.

19. A method according to Claim 1, wherein the polymer is a synthetic
polymer of molecular weight of 1-8 x 10 6 g/mol.

20. A method according to Claim 1, wherein the polymer is a natural
polymer having a molecular weight of 0.5-2 x 10 6 g/mol.
