CA 02264555 1999-02-25WO 98/13467 PCT/EP97/04925AQUEOUS STRUCTURED LIQUID DETERGENT COMPOSITION COMPRISINGAMINOCARBOXYLATE SEQUESTRANT5 Technical FieldThe present invention relates to aqueous liquids, inparticular structured liquids and processes of preparingaqueous liquids.10 Background & Prior ArtLiquid detergent compositions are well—known in the art andoffer several advantages over solid compositions. Forexample, liquid compositions are easier to measure, todispense and to dissolve into a laundering liquor and15 liquid compositions give more confidence to the consumer ofbeing safer and less harsh to the washed or launderedtextile and environment than solid compositions. This maybe the reason that heavy and light duty laundry liquiddetergent products are gaining in popularity ever since20 their introduction on the market at the expense of powdereddetergent products, in particular for coloured fabrics. We have however found that liquid detergent compositionsmay suffer from extensive physical instability, chemical25 instability and/or high viscosity problems as compared tosolid detergent compositions and these problems are evenmore imminent for concentrated aqueous liquids. This isprobably due to the high number of possible interactions ofingredients in liquid detergent compositions. Moreover,30 these interactions will affect not only the stability andviscosity, but also the wash performance.1015202530CA 02264555 1999-02-25W0 98/ 13467 PCT/EP97/04925EP 137474 and EP 137475 disclose aqueous prespottingcompositions comprising surfactant and chelating agent. Thecompositions are said to have good water—borne and oil-borne stain removal characteristics.EP 267,653 discloses detergent compositions comprisingsurfactant, builder and biodegradable EDDS which is said topossess excellent stain removal properties.WO 92/06164 discloses the use of polyhydroxy fatty acidamide surfactants in detergent compositions and refers tothe use of EDDS as chelating agent.WO 94/03553 discloses detergent compositions comprisingbleach and EDDS, as a biodegradable bleach stabiliser.WO 94/03554 discloses detergent compositions comprisingEDDS,are said to have benefits on bleachable and enzymatic stainpercarbonate and layered silicate. The compositionsremoval even when reduced amounts in total of builder, bleach and chelant are used.WO 94/03572 discloses detergent compositions comprisingEDDS and crystalline layered silicate to reduce thedeposition of salt encrustations and multi—cycle build upof such encrustations. As indicated in the abstract anddisclosed in the example, the document relates to granularcompositions. The compositions comprise perborate andlayered silicate material.1015202530CA 02264555 1999-02-25W0 98/13467 PCT/EP97/04925WO 94/20599 discloses detergent compositions comprisingsurfactant and EDDG or HPDDS. The compositions are said tohave good stain removal and cleaning performance.US 3,956,198, US 5,221,496,EP 233,010 disclose the use of aminocarboxylates forUS 5,186,856, US 4,560,492 andimproving stain removal.Aminocarboxylates have further been disclosed in US4,663,071 and FR 2,156,080.We have found that a way of formulating detergentcompositions which have good stain removing performance andenvironmental profile. The compositions have the advantageof being physically and chemically stable with low viscousand good dispersing properties.Consequently, the present invention is directed to anaqueous structured liquid detergent composition comprisingsurfactant material, electrolyte and water, wherein theelectrolyte comprises aminocarboxylate sequestrant andbuilder material. The present invention is further directed to a process ofpreparing an aqueous structured liquid detergentcomposition comprising surfactant material, electrolyte andwater, wherein the electrolyte comprises aminocarboxylatesequestrant, and wherein the process involves mixing theingredients whilst keeping the pH above 6 and keeping thetemperature below 80°C, preferably after addition of thecarboxylate.1015202530CA 02264555 1999-02-25W0 98I13467 PCT/EP97/04925The present invention is further directed to a process forwashing coloured fabric by using a liquid detergentcomposition comprising an aminocarboxylate sequestrant.Detailed Description of the InventionIn View of the consumer confidence, liquids preferably onlycontain safe and non-harsh ingredients. Consequently, oflayered silicate and contain up to 10%, more preferably upto 5%,liquids of the invention are preferably free of bleach, most preferably up to 3%, in particular preferredsubstantially no solvent material. We have found that that liquids of the present inventionwhich meet one or more of these criteria are in particularpreferred for the washing of stained, coloured clothes.Liquid compositionsTwo general and separate classes of liquids compositions, isotropic and structured liquids, are known in the art.Isotropic liquids are liquids in which all ingredients aredissolved and, contrary to structured liquids, there is nostructure present in isotropic liquid.Structured liquids are well-known in the art. They caneither be internally structured, whereby the structure isformed by primary ingredients, preferably by surfactantmaterial, and/or by providing a three dimensional matrixstructure using secondary additives, preferably polymersand/or silicate material. Structuring may be brought aboutto endow properties such as consumer preferred flowproperties and/or turbid appearance. Many structuredliquids are also capable of suspending particulate solids,1015202530CA 02264555 1999-02-25W0 98/ 13467 PCT/EP97/04925such as particles of clay that may be used to provide afabric-softening effect to fabrics. Examples of structuredliquids without suspended solids are given in US—A—4,244,840, whilst examples where solid particles aresuspended are disclosed in EP-A-160 342; EP—A—38 101;EP—A-140 452 and also in the aforementioned US-A-4,244,840.We have found that structured liquids are preferred overisotropic liquids as they provide more formulationflexibility, e.g.concentration. Structured liquids may however suffer fromas regards inclusion of ingredients andviscosity and stability problems.Preferably, liquids of the invention have a viscosity offrom 200 to 2500mPa.s at 21 s‘1at 25°C, more preferablythe viscosity is lower than 2000, most preferably theviscosity is lower than 1200.Preferably, liquids of the invention have a stability of atmost 5mm volume phase separation after 1 month storage atroom temperature, more preferably at most 2mm, mostpreferably there is substantially no phase separation.SurfactantsLiquid detergent compositions of the invention comprisesurfactant materials. In the widest definition the surfactant material ingeneral, may comprise one or more surfactants, and may beselected from anionic, cationic, nonionic, zwitterionic andamphoteric species, and (provided mutually compatible)mixtures thereof.l015202530CA 02264555 1999-02-25W0 98/13467 PCT/EP97/04925Suitable nonionic surfactants include for example aliphaticalcohols, acids, amides or alkyl phenols with alkyl oxides, especially ethylene oxide. Specific nonionic detergentcompounds are alkyl (C6-Cm) primary or secondary linear orbranched alcohols with ethylene oxide, and products made bycondensation of ethylene oxide with the reaction productsof propylene oxide and ethylene—di—amine. We have found that the wash performance of liquids is inparticular improved when nonionics are included incompositions of the invention. Preferably, the level ofnonionic surfactant materials is from 1 to 40% by weight ofthe composition, more preferred from 2 to 25%.Compositions of the present invention may contain syntheticanionic surfactant ingredients. Suitable anionicsurfactants are usually water—soluble alkali metal salts oforganic sulphates and sulphonates having alkyl radicalscontaining from about 8 to about 22 carbon atoms. Examplesof suitable synthetic anionic surfactant compounds aresodium and potassium C8—Cl8 alkyl sulphates, sodium and(C9-Cm) benzene sulphonates and etherthe level of the abovepotassium alkylvariants thereof. Generally, mentioned non—soap anionic surfactant materials is from 1to 40 %to 25%.by weight of the composition, more preferred from 2It is also possible, and sometimes preferred, to include analkali metal soap of a Cl2—Cl8 carboxylic acid. Preferably, the level of soap is from 1 to 35% by weight of thecomposition, more preferred from 5 to 25%.1015202530CA 02264555 1999-02-25WO 98/13467 PCT/EP97/04925Preferably, surfactant material is present at a level of atleast 1% by weight of the composition, more preferred atleast 5% by weight, most preferred at least 10% by weightof the composition; and preferably at a level of at most70% by weight, more preferably at most 40%, most preferablyat most 35% by weight.Preferably, compositions according to the inventioncomprise anionic and nonionic surfactants, more preferablyeach at a level of higher than 5% by weight of thecomposition.Electrolyte MaterialCompositions according to the invention compriseelectrolyte material.
