MARKETING DEVICE
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates in general to an device for receiving a piece of
written
material, and more particularly to a device on which advertising and marketing
can be displayed.
Bac~ound of the Invention
Newspapers and other written materials are prime mediums for advertisers and
marketers
who use "inserts" on which products and services are displayed. These inserts
are often inserted
in the middle of a folded newspapers and end up being discarded by the reader
before they are
even glanced at. The advertisers and marketers do not, therefore, get their
message or pitch
across to the readers effectively, if at all. In addition, the great volume of
these inserts found in
one piece of written material makes this form of advertising less than
effective even if the reader
does not discard them right away. Not all the inserts are read through or even
glanced at.
Magazines sometimes have advertising stapled to the outside of their cover.
This usually
involves advertising of the magazine company itself, and is meant to be
permanently affixed to
the cover. There is usually only one product advertised and can only be used
if the piece of
written material is stapled.
Therefore, a device for advertising or marketing products or services is
required which
can be used with a piece of written materials, such as newspapers, magazines,
booklets,
pamphlets and brochures, and which gives a reader an opportunity to see or
glance at the
advertisements before discarding it, is desired.
Summar5r of the Invention
The present invention relates to an device for receiving a piece of written
material on
which can be displayed advertisement or marketing for various products or
services.
In accordance with aspect of the present invention there is provided a device
receiving a
piece of written material, said device for displaying advertising and
marketing information and
comprising a flat member having an inside surface and an outside surface, said
flat member
having at least one fold for folding towards the inside surface, said inside
surface for receiving

the piece of written material when the flat member is folded.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying
drawings which
show a preferred embodiment thereof and wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates in a perspective view, a device for receiving a piece of
written
material W;
Figure 2 illustrates in a perspective view, the device shown in Figure 1
without the
written material;
Figure 3 illustrates in a back elevation view, the device shown in Figure 1
with all the
folds unfolded;
Figure 4 illustrates in a front elevation view, the device shown in Figure 1
with all the
folds unfolded.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Referring to Figure 1, there is illustrated a device 10 for receiving a piece
of written
material W, the device comprising a flat member 11 having an outside surface
12 and an inside
surface 14. The flat member 11 is folded towards the inside surface 14 at fold
24 for receiving
the piece of written material, including but not limited to, newspapers,
magazines, brochures,
booklets and pamphlets.
Referring the Figure 2, there is illustrated a device 10 for receiving a piece
of written
material W, the device for providing advertising or marketing space. The
device comprises a flat
member 11, made of foldable material, having an outside surface 12 and an
inside surface 14.
The flat member is delimited by a pair of longitudinal edges 16 and 18 and a
pair of transverse
edges 20 and 22. Device 10 is folded at a middle fold 24 parallel to and at
equal distance from
each of the transverse edges 20 and 22. Device 10, is also folded at
intermediate folds 26 and 28
which are parallel to the middle fold 24. Intermediate folds 26 and 28 are
located at a distance
from middle fold 24 greater than the distance between the intermediate folds
and transverse
edges 20 and 22. Middle fold 24 and intermediate folds 26 and 28 all fold
towards the inside

surface 14.
Referring to Figure 3, there is illustrated the device 10, wherein outside
surface 12 forms
a plurality of surfaces along the pair of longitudinal edges, namely: an
inside back surface 30
formed from a first transverse edge 20 to a first intermediate fold 26; an
outside back surface 32
formed from the first intermediate fold 26 to the middle fold 24; an outside
front surface 34 from
the middle fold 24 to a second intermediate fold 28; and, an inside front
surface 36 from the
second intermediate fold 28 to a second transverse edge 22.
Refernng to Figure 4, there is illustrated the device 10, wherein inside
surface 14 forms a
plurality of surfaces, along the pair of longitudinal edges, on the reverse of
the plurality of
surfaces formed on the outside surface 12, namely: a reverse.inside front
surface 38 from the
second transverse edge 22 to the second intermediate fold 28; a reverse
outside front surface 40
from the second intermediate fold 28 to the middle fold 24; a reverse outside
back surface 42
from the middle fold 24 to the first intermediate fold 26; and, a reverse
inside back surface 44
from the first intermediate fold 26 to the first transverse edge 20.
When the device is folded, the inside front surface 36 and the inside back
surface 30 are
adjacent and are for receiving the piece of written material W. When the
device is folded, reverse
inside front surface 38 and reverse outside front surface 40 are adjacent one
another, and reverse
outside back surface 42 and reverse inside back surface 44 are also adjacent
one another. The
portions of reverse outside front surface 40 and of reverse outside back
surface 42 adjacent
middle fold 24 are also adjacent because the distance between middle fold 24
and intermediate
folds 26 and 28 is greater than the distance between the intermediate folds 26
and 28 and
transverse edges 20 and 22. All surfaces are for displaying advertisement or
marketing for
various products or services. Independent advertising pieces can also be
inserted within the
device between surfaces 38 and 40, and surfaces 42 and 44. The device also
comprises a pair of
repositionable glue strips 46 attached to the inside surface 14 substantially
parallel and adjacent
to the middle fold 24. Glue strips 46 are for adhering the device 10 to the
outside of the piece of
written material W.
To use the device, advertising or marketing of various kinds are printed to or
otherwise
displayed on the various surfaces making up the device 10. Individual pieces
of advertising and
CA 02270803 1999-OS-03
marketing can be inserted between the various surfaces making up the device.
Once all the folds
are folded towards inside surface 14, the piece of written material is
inserted between inside front
surface 36 and the inside back surface 30. Piece of written material W can be
inserted within the
device in any position or orientation. If the spine of the material is
inserted so that it comes into
contact with middle fold 24, the device can be used to hold and maintain the
piece of written
material upright, for example a newspaper. If the device is made of relatively
rigid material, it
will help support the flexible pages or cover of the written material. The
surfaces of the device
can also be used to personalize the written material. This could include
displaying a person's
name, address or any other piece of personal information on the outside
surfaces 32 and 34.
The above-described embodiments of the present invention are meant to be
illustrative of
preferred embodiments and are not intended to limit the scope of the present
invention. Various
modifications, which would be readily apparent to one skilled in the art, are
intended to be within
the scope of the present invention. The only limitations to the scope of the
present invention are
set forth in the following claims appended hereto.
