WINDING TOOL CAM RATCHET
Field of the invention:
The ratchet system of the present invention has been developed to facilitate
the
installation of doors for mini warehouses and commercial rolling steel doors,
but
may be applied to other types of installations where a torque must be applied
on
shaft and maintained.
Background of the invention:
All garage doors presently in use are counterbalanced by different means. Some
use a counterweight while others use a spring under traction or torsion. These
counterbalancing systems are required to lower the strength required by the
user
or the motorized system to raise and lower the door. !n order to put the
spring
under tension, the installer must wind the spring and maintain this torque or
tension in the spring by a separate system. During installation, installers
must wind
the shaft which is under tension. Usually, a pipe wrench is used: The present
invention concerns a winding tool cam ratchet which is easier to use and
speeds
up installation and adjustment with respect to a pipe wrench.
Description of a preferred embodiment:
Figure 1 presents the invention in its preferred embodiment. The tool includes
a
ring (1) with a hole of a diameter corresponding to the shaft to be wound. A
cam
(2) is mounted eccentrically on the ring (1 ), and maintained under tension by
a
spring (3). An arm (5) is attached to the ring by welding or rivet.

2
In Figure 2, the tool (1) is installed about a shaft (10) which is usually
maintained
under tension. The user then rotates the ring (1) around the shaft in a way
such
that the cam (2) blocks on contact with the shaft (10) and forces the shaft to
follow
the movement of the ring. If the ring is turned in the opposite way the cam is
free
and the ring may turn without having the shaft (10) following the same
movement:
Various modifications can be brought to the tool of the present invention,
such as:
-The tool may be provided with more than one cam.
-It may also be done in two sections. One to secure the shaft and allow the
other
ring to turn while the shaft is immobile.
-The cam may or not be provided with teeth to increase friction between shaft
and
cam.
- The ring, arm and cam may have different shapes according to specific needs.
Although the present invention has been explained hereinabove by way of a
preferred embodiment thereof, it should be pointed out that any modifications
to
this preferred embodiment within the scope of the appended claims is not
deemed
to alter or change the nature and scope of the present invention.
