English Abstract

A card game device is disclosed for use by a plurality of players in which the
players
endeavor to determine the title of a movie from a brief quote excerpt
therefrom. The game device
includes a plurality of ticket cards with each card of the plurality of ticket
cards belonging to a
category of a group of movie categories. A plurality of quote cards is
provided with each quote card
having a first and a second side. The first side of the quote card has the
brief quote excerpt thereon,
the brief quote excerpt belonging to one category of the group of movie
categories. The quote cards
firstly are shuffled with only the second side of the quote cards facing
towards the players. Secondly,
the shuffled quote cards are arranged in a stack with only the second side of
the quote cards facing
towards the players. The stack has a top and a bottom end so that the first
side of the quote cards with
quote excerpts thereon are hidden from the players. The arrangement is such
that in playing the
game, a quote card is taken from the top end of the stack of quote cards and
the brief quote excerpt
on the first side of the quote card is read therefrom. The first player who is
able to determine the title
of the movie from which the excerpt is taken then wins a ticket card taken
from the category of the
group of the movie categories corresponding to the title of the movie. The
player who first wins a
ticket card from each category of the groups of movie categories is a winner
of the card game.

Title: A card game device .
Background of the invention.
Field of the invention.
The present invention relates to a card game device for use by a plurality of
players in which
the players endeavor to determine the title of a movie from a brief quote
excerpt therefrom. More
specifically, the present invention relates to a card game device in which the
players endeavor to
determine the title of a movie from a brief quote excerpt therefrom and the
player that correctly
guesses the title of the movie wins a ticket card.
Background information.
Many card games have been proposed in which cards are randomly picked to
reveal
information that enables a player to win points or tricks or the like.
However, most of the prior art
games do not fully challenge the players fund of knowledge but rather depend
to a large degree on
chance or luck.
However, the present invention provides a card game in which the players are
able to pit their
skills against each other by correctly identifying the title of various movies
from brief quote excerpts
taken from such movies.
Therefore, it is a primary feature of the present invention to provide a game
device that

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
2
overcomes the problems associated with the prior art arrangements.
Another feature of the present invention is the provision of a game device
that is easily
played by players of various ages.
A further feature of the present invention is the provision of a game device
that challenges
the skill of the players.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will be readily
apparent to those
skilled in the art by a consideration of the detailed description of a
preferred embodiment of the
present invention contained herein.
Summary of the invention.
The present invention relates to a card game device for use by a plurality of
players in which
the players endeavor to determine the title of a movie from a brief quote
excerpt therefrom. The
game device includes a plurality of ticket cards with each card of the
plurality of ticket cards
belonging to one of a group of movie categories. A plurality of quote cards is
provided with each
quote card having a first and a second side. The first side of the quote card
has the brief quote
excerpt thereon, the brief quote excerpt belonging to one of the group of
movie categories. The quote
cards firstly are shuffled with only the second side of the quote cards facing
towards the players.
Secondly, the shuffled quote cards are arranged in a stack with only the
second side of the quote

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
3
cards facing towards the players. The stack has a top and a bottom end so that
the first side of the
quote cards with quote excerpt thereon is hidden from the players. The
arrangement is such that in
playing the game, a quote card is taken from the top end of the stack of quote
cards and the brief
quote excerpt on the first side of the quote card is read therefrom. T'he
first player who is able to
determine the title of the movie from which the excerpt is taken then wins a
ticket card taken from
the corresponding category of the group of the movie categories so as to
correspond with the title
of the movie. The player who first wins a ticket card from each one of the
groups of movie categories
is a winner of the card game.
In a more specific embodiment of the present invention, the plurality of
players includes two
or more players.
Also, each ticket card of the plurality of ticket cards includes an indicia to
indicate which
category the ticket card belongs to.
Furthermore, the group of movie categories includes different categories
within a range of
six to ten.
More specifically, the group of movie categories includes different categories
within a range
of from seven to nine, the different categories of ticket cards being arranged
in separate piles with
each pile including only ticket cards of one category.

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
4
Also, the first side of the quote card further includes a decade indication
which corresponds
to the movie from which the excerpt is taken.
Additionally, the first side indicates the category which corresponds to the
movie from which
the quote excerpt on the quote card is taken. The arrangement is such that
when the quote card is
taken from the stack, the decade and the category of the quote card is read
prior to reading the quote
excerpt.
Moreover, a further stack of quote cards is located opposite to the stack of
quote cards.
In playing the game device, one of the players is chosen to be a director. The
director takes
a quote card from the top of the stack and reads the decade and category after
which the director
reads the quote excerpt. The arrangement is such that any player other than
the director is free to call
"cut" during the reading of the quote excerpt. The player calling "cut" then
attempts to identify the
title of the movie from which the partial quote excerpt is taken. If the
player calling "cut" correctly
identifies the movie title, such player wins a ticket card from a
corresponding category. However,
if the player calling "cut" incorrectly identifies the movie title, such
player forfeits a previously won
ticket card and is eliminated from participating in any further action
relative to the quote card being
read.
Furthermore, in the event that a player calling "cut" has failed to correctly
identify the movie
title, the director then completes the entire quote excerpt. Then the director
in turn gives, by way of

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
a casting call, for each player with the exception of the eliminated players,
an opportunity to guess
the title of the movie. Such guessing of the title of the movie by the non
eliminated players does not
carry a penalty if the guess is incorrect but results in winning a
corresponding category ticket card
if the correct title is guessed.
5
Additionally, in the event that none of the players by way of calling "cut" or
by reason of the
"casting call" have correctly given the title of the movie, the director will
read a plurality of title
choices or "take one" and will in turn invite three of the non eliminated
players to guess the title of
the movie from the title choices. However, if none of the players guesses the
correct title choice, the
director wins a corresponding ticket card.
Many modifications and variations of the present invention will be readily
apparent to those
skilled in the art by a consideration of the detailed description contained
hereinafter taken in
conjunction with the annexed drawings which show a preferred embodiment of the
present
invention. However, such modifications and variations fall within the spirit
and scope of the present
invention as defined by the appended claims.

according to the
present invention. As shown in Fig. 1, the game device 10 is for use by a
plurality of players 12, 13
and 14. The players 12-14 endeavor to determine the title of a movie from a
brief quote excerpt
therefrom. The game device 10 includes a plurality of ticket cards 16, 17, 18,
19, 20, 21, 22 and 23
with each card such as card 16 of the plurality of ticket cards 16-23
belonging to one of a group of
movie categories C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7 and C8.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. As shown in Fig.
2, the game device
10 also includes a plurality of quote cards 24, 25 and 26.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the quote card 24 shown in Fig. 2. As shown in
Fig. 3, the quote
card 24 has a first and a second side 28 and 30 respectively. The first side
28 of the quote card 24
has the brief quote excerpt thereon, the brief quote excerpt belonging to one
of the group of movie
categories C 1 to C8. The quote cards 24-26 firstly are shuffled with only the
second side 30 of the
quote cards 24-26 facing towards the players 12-14. Secondly, the shuffled
quote cards 24-26 are
arranged as shown in Fig. 2, in a stack generally designated 32 with only the
second side 30 of the
quote cards 24-26 facing towards the players 12-14. As shown in Fig. 2, the
stack 32 has a top and

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
a bottom end 34 and 36 respectively so that the first side 28 of the quote
cards 24-26 with the quote
excerpt thereon is hidden from the players 12-14. The arrangement is such that
in playing the game,
a quote card such as card 24 is taken from the top end 34 of the stack 32 of
quote cards 24-26 and
the brief quote excerpt on the first side 28 of the quote card 24 is read
therefrom. The first player of
the players 12-14 who is able to determine the title of the movie from which
the excerpt is taken then
wins one of the ticket cards 16 to 23 taken from the group of the movie
category C 1 to C8
corresponding to the title of the movie. The player who first wins a ticket
card 16 to 23 from each
one of the groups of movie categories C 1 to C8 is a winner of the card game.
In a more specific embodiment of the present invention, the plurality of
players includes two
or more players.
Also, as shown in Fig. 1, each ticket card of the plurality of ticket cards 16
to 23 includes
an indicia 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44 and 45 to indicate which category the
ticket card belongs to.
Furthermore, the group of movie categories C 1 to C8 includes different
categories within a
range of six to ten.
More specifically, the group of movie categories C1 to C8 includes different
categories
within a range of from seven to nine and preferably 8 as shown in Figs l and
2. The different
categories C1 to C8 of the ticket cards 16 to 23 are arranged in separate
piles P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6,
P7 and P8 as shown in Fig. 1 with each pile P1 to P8 including a plurality of
ticket cards but only

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
8
ticket cards of one category.
Fig. 4 is a view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. As shown in Fig. 4, the
first side 28 of the
quote card 24 further includes a decade indication 46 which corresponds to the
movie from which
the excerpt is taken.
Additionally, the first side 28 indicates the category 48 such as category C 1
which
corresponds to the movie from which the quote excerpt on the quote card 24 is
taken. The
arrangement is such that when the quote card 24 is taken from the stack 32,
the decade 46 and the
category 48 of the quote card is read prior to reading the quote excerpt.
Moreover, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a further stack 50 of quote cards is
located opposite to
the stack 32 of quote cards 24 to 26.
In playing the game device 10, one of the players such as player 12 is chosen
to be a director.
The director takes a quote card such as card 24 from the top end 34 of the
stack 32 and reads the
decade 46 and category 48 after which the director reads the quote excerpt 52
shown in Fig. 4. The
arrangement is such that any player such as players 13 or 14 other than the
director player 12 is free
to call "cut" during the reading of the quote excerpt 52. The player such as
player 13 calling "cut"
then attempts to identify the title of the movie from which the partial quote
excerpt 52 is taken. If
the player 13 calling "cut" correctly identifies the movie title, such player
13 wins a ticket card 16
to 23 from a corresponding category C 1 to C8. However, if the player 13
calling "cut" incorrectly

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
9
identifies the movie title, such player 13 forfeits a previously won ticket
card and is eliminated from
participating in any further action relative to the quote card 24 being read.
Furthermore, in the event that a player such as player 13 calling "cut" has
failed to correctly
identify the movie title, the director player 12 then completes the entire
quote excerpt 52 and in turn
gives, by way of a casting call, for each player (in this case, player 14)
with the exception of the
eliminated player 13 and the director 12, an opportunity to guess the title of
the movie. Such
guessing of the title of the movie by the non eliminated players (in this case
the player 14) does not
carry a penalty if the player 14 guesses incorrectly but results in winning a
corresponding category
ticket card if the correct title is guessed by the player 14.
Additionally, in the event that none of the players (in this case player 14)
by way of calling
"cut" or by reason of the "casting call" have correctly given the title of the
movie, the director 12 will
read a plurality of title choices or "take one" 54, 55, 56 and 57 printed
beneath the quote excerpt 52
and will in turn invite non eliminated players (in this case player 14) to
guess the title of the movie
from the title choices 54 to 57. However, if none of the players such as
player 14 guesses the correct
title choice from the title choices 54-57, in this case, the director 12 wins
a corresponding ticket card
of the ticket cards 16-23.
In playing the card game device 10 according to the present invention, the
ticket cards 16 to
23 are sorted into the respective categories C1 to C8 and are placed in
corresponding piles P1 to P8
as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with several ticket cards being disposed in each of
the piles P 1 to P8.

CA 02485474 2004-10-20
Next, the quote cards which may include 200 cards are shuffled with the first
sides 28 thereof
facing downwards and are divided into the stack 32 and further stack 50. A
director is chosen to
begin the game. The choosing of the director can be for example by choosing
the player whose
birthday is closest to the date of playing the game. The director such as
player 12 then lifts the top
5 quote card 24 from the stack 32. The director could alternatively take the
top quote card from the
further stack 50. The director 12 then reads the decade 46 from which the
quote excerpt is taken. For
example, if the quote excerpt is "closes the door, he opens a window" taken
from the movie "Sound
of Music", the decade 46 would be 1950. The director 12 then reads the
category 48 which in this
example would be "musical" which could be designated C 1.
The director 12 then reads as a first round of play, the brief quote excerpt
52 such as "closes
the door, he opens a window". If one of the players such as player 13 "cuts"
in during the reading
of the quote 52, the director immediately stops reading the quote 52. For
example, if the player 13
calls "cut" when the director 12 has only read "closes the door, he opens ..",
then the director 12
invites the player 13 to guess the title of the movie. If the player
incorrectly guesses by for example
suggesting the title "Gone with the Wind", the player 13 must hand over one of
the player's
previously won ticket cards 16-23 and is banned from further participation in
further guessing the
title of the movie corresponding to card 24. If the player 13 does not yet
have any ticket cards 16 to
23, then that player 13 only forfeits participation in the current play
relative to card 24.
If player 13 correctly guesses the title of the movie, the player 13 wins one
of the ticket cards
from the pile C 1 which is the category "musical". Subsequently, the director
12, takes the quote card

24 out of play and a second play is begun. However, if the player 13 gives an
incorrect answer to
the partial quote "closes the door, he opens ..", the director 12 moves to a
second round of play or
"casting call". In the second round, the director 12 invites any player other
than the director 12 or
the player I3 who has been eliminated from participation in the game relative
to card 24, to guess
the title of the movie after the director has completed the reading of the
entire quote 52 such as
"closes the door, he opens a window". In this case, the only player eligible
to guess is player 14
because player 13 has been eliminated. The player 14 is permitted to guess or
to pass. If player 14
guesses correctly, player 14 wins a ticket card from the pile P1 for category
Cl. However, if player
14 "passes" or incorrectly guesses the title, the game moves to a third round
or "take one" round.
Nevertheless, the player 14 does not forfeit a ticket card due to calling
"pass" or incorrectly guessing
the title. Also, player 14 is not eliminated from further participation in the
game with regard to card
24.
In the third round or "take one", the director 12 reads aloud from card 24 the
title choices 54,
55, 56 and 57. For example, choice 54 could be "Gone with the Wind", choice 55
could be "Sound
of Music" choice 56 could be "The King and I" and choice 57 could be "Kismet".
'The player 14 is
then invited to make a guess from the choices 54 to 57. If the player 14
guesses correctly the choice
55, player 14 wins a ticket card from category C 1. However, if the player 14
incorrectly guesses for
example 54 instead of the correct choice 55, the director 12 wins a ticket
card from the category C 1.
The card 24 is then taken out of play and a new director such as player 13
taken for example in a
clockwise direction is appointed. The new director 13 then takes a quote card
from the stack 32 or
further stack 50 and the process is repeated until one of the players 12 to 14
has at least one ticket

card from each one of the categories C 1 to C8. When this happens, the player
with a ticket card from
each category Ci to C8 calls "That's a wrap" and wins the game.
Also, during a turn relative to a particular quote card, a player is free to
exchange two of the
player's ticket cards for one of the ticket cards in the piles Pl to P8.
However, exchanging ticket
cards between players is not permitted.
The present invention provides a unique card game device which not only is
entertaining but
also challenges the skill of the players thereof.
