Carrying apparatus for rascu3.ag pereoxa.s
The ~.nvention relates to a carrying apparatus for
rescuing persons, in particular from a space with a
small access opening, the carrying apparatus
accommodating the persons in an elongated transport
p08it10n.
DE 20 2065 003 3x6.3 has already disclosed are apparatus
for rescuing persons from space$ with small access
openings. Use ~.s made of a transport device which
accommodates the person to be rescued, rnrhzch is
designed to fix the person accommodated in an elongated
transport pos~.tion and Q~ which the external contour is
t~atohed to the acvess opening.
From time to tide it is necessary to enter closed
spaces or containers such as drying cy7.inders or other
container$ such as bailers in a maah~.ne for producing a
fibrous web, in particular a paper or board web, for
installation,, cvnversien, repair or maintenance
purposes, for which purpose one or more persons ha~~re to
enter the space or the container through a relative~,y
small access opening, for example an oval access
opening.
The height and width dimer~s~,ons of such an elliptical
opening are laetween 280 and 300 m~, on the ore hand,
and between 380 and 400 mnt, on the other hand. For the
case in. which a person ~.e injured, or beGOmes
unconscious during the work, it is necessary to re$cue
this persozz from the container, a further difficulty
consist~,r~g in the fact that there axe often. restricted
space conditions outside the container as weal,
The known apparatus is configured as a closed or partly
closed tube, which permits a person who, for example,

is injured or unconscious to be fixed in an e7,Qngated,
in particular lyi.r~g, transport position, with arms
either lying at the sides ox extended upward and then
to push the trar~sport device with the person located in
it through the access opening.
'fhe object of the invention is to provide a more simply
constructed apparatus for xe~cuing persons from a
conta~.x~er With a narrow access opening which, in
particular, aan also k~e used under restricted space
conditions.
According to the invention, in a carry~.~xg apparatus of
the type named at the beginning, this object is
achieved in that it comprises a middle part which is
substantially curved in cross section and is open at
the top, which accommodates at least the truz~k and
possibly also the head of a person to be rescued, the
person being supported ix~ a supine posit~.on.
~0
As a result of the open configuration., the pexeoxi to be
rescued does not become elaustrophobac irz the ear~yzng
apparatus. The carrying apparatus can be used
universally. The person to be rescued is preferably
placed in the carrying apparatus Qn the spine, it being
po~s~.ble for hands and arms to Ire fixed above the head.
The persoxx is preferably pushed or pulled out of the
container with tyke head end in front .
The carrying apparatus preferably has a width of 370 to
39o mm aid a height of ~.4o to 150 mm matched to the
size of the opening.
Advantageous developmezi.ts emerge from the subcz~ims,
the de~cr~.ption and' the drawir~gs .
Tt is advantageous if the piddle part has a contour
which eorrespond$ to the contour of the opening, that
is to say is curved in cross section and has a greater

3 _
curvature in the middle then outsa.de. As a result, the
carrying appars.tus is also given a stable structure.
Ac~vantageous~.y, at least one, preferably two, retaining
straps for fastening the trunk of the person to the
middle part axe provided on the middle part.
zz~ order to be able to transport the person firmly
strapped on the carryir~g apparatus by means of the
la reta~.ning straps, the carrying apparatus is equipped
with carrying handles or holding bars wh~.ch are fitted.
or can be fitted in particular at the ends, that is to
say as at least one of the two, preferably both, ends,
arid/or ~axrying handles or carrying slats present o~
the long sides.
The carrya.ng handles or holding bars can preferab~.y be
pulled out from the middle part or from the head end or
from the foot end and p~.cked up, or the holding bars
are formed as push-in handles. In addition, the
carrying apparatus can be held in slotted, preferably
reinforced, openings in the middle part or at the foot
end or in the head end.
In order to avoid injury to the face of the person to
~e rescued, a face guard is provided, which covers tl~e
face c~ a person to be rescued for the purpose of
protection against zx~jury during txanaport.
The face g~a~-d is preferably arranged such that it can
be adjusted vertically, for example by means of a
telescopsc device, with respect to the middle part. If
the carrying apparatus is not being used, the face
guard is, for example, placed ora the inner wall of the
carrying apparatus. However, it is also advantageous
~.f the face guard can be taken off the middle part,
If the earry~.xig apparatus a.s not bei~_~xg used, a.n this
case the carrying handles and the f~,ae guard cad be

stowed, for example, in the hollow formed by the inner
wall, by means of fastening deva.ces pxovided ~ar this
pt-~.rPose .
In ~ further advantageous refinement of the invention,
provision is made for the middle part to have a tapered
head end az~d/Qr a tapered foot end, that is to say a
head end arid a foot end which each have a eircum~erence
and d~.ameter that is reduced with respect to the middle
part. Hy means c~f this tapered form at 'the head and
foot end, a "streamlined" contour matohed to the
contour of the body is achzeved.
In another de~re~.opment, a hand support is
ac~~raz~tageously fitted or can be fitted to the middle
part arid is~ used to fix the arms of the person ly~.ng ors
the carrying apparatus in an extended position above
the head.
0 The haxid support is advantageously designed in one
piece with the face guard, preferably in the shape of a
2, and can be adjusted vertieal7.y and removed jointly.
0~ course, however, ~.t a.s also poss~.ble to fix the acme
beside the trunk of the person if the space within. the
middle part permits this.
In a further refinement of the invention, the hand
support can advantageously be pulled out of the middle
part if, for e~tample, it is arrar~ged st the head er~,d of
the middle part. Likewise, the hand support oan also
be arranged to be removable from the ma.ddle part.
It is likewise advantageous if at least one reta~.xa,~.xig
strap is fitted to the hand support, in order to use
this to fix the hands of the person to be transported,
to the hand support.
CA 02519971 2005-09-16
xn a further refinement of the xr~ventsvn, a fioot
support for supporting the feet and, if appropxa.afie,
also the lower legs is fitted to the m~.ddle part or can
be fitted to the latter if the middle p~,xt does not
have a suf f icient length to accommodate persons with a
greater body length as well. However, if a foot
support is used, the length of the middle part may be
restric~eol to about x.200 mm to 1500 mm, which means
that a minimum longitudinal extend. is achieved. Once
the hara.ds and arms of the transported person are
outside the container, then these can advantageously or
else of necessity be pivoted rearward during the
further withdrawal of the person and laid on the body.
The foat support can also b~ pulled out andjor pivoted
out of the middle part, ~.n particular in the horizontal
and/or vertical direction; likewise, it is possible to
provide for the foot part t.o be revved from the middle
part. When the carrying apparatus is not being used,
the foot support is preferably pushed into the middle
part. It remains automatically in this position by
means of a spx-~.ng-loaded fast~eri.ing.
A retaa.nzng strap is advantageously fitted t~o the foot
support as well in order to fix the feet of the person
to be rescued.

.1~ carrying aQpaxatus 1 tf~.gs. 1 - 6) compr~.ses a shell
2 which ~.s curved to different extents. The shell 2 is
preferably produced from a material which has good
stability characteristics with a low weight.
Use is made in particular of flat material, such as
sheet aluminum, with a thickziess of ~ox example 2 to
3 mm or fiberglass, fiber rein~oxced material, textile,
plast~.c andJor metal fabric or mesh, it being possible
fox there to be additional reinforcing means, for
example ire the form of ribs or reinforcing struts.
The carrying apparatus 1 has a midd~.e part 4 which, at
its top end, over an intermediate part 5 with a
tapering diameter, comprises a head part 6 to hold the
head of the person t4 be rescued, which has a smaller
3o diameter than the middle past 4. At the other end, the
middle part 4 comprises a foot part 7 for supporting
the lower extremities of the pexpon. Ar1 intermediate
part 3 for the steep or gradual reduction. o~ the
c~.rcumference of the middle part 4 in the direction of
the foot part 7 can be presexat betweez~ the foot part 7
and the middle part 4.
In the region ofi the head part 6, a ~aoe guard 8 is
provided which. is connected ,trio a vert~.cal flat part 9

The toot part 7 of the middle part 4 ~.s prefexa, bly
adjoined by a foot suppoxt 14, ixl particular o~,e that
can be pulled out of the toot part 7, for supportirag
the legs and feet of the pexson, which can preferably
be pulled out of the foot part 7 and/or the middle pant
4 in accordance with the length of the person to be
transported.
At the head end of the middle part 4, a hard support 15
(fig. 5) can be pulled out of the latter ans~/or out of
tyke head part 5, on which the hands of the person can
be placed, stretched upward over the head in, extensior5.
of the axis of the body, and can be fixed.
Fuxther retaining straps ~.~, 17 can be fixed to both to
the foot support 14 and tc~ the hand se~.pport ~.5.
Likew~.se, holding or carr~,rix~g rods 18 , 19 and 2 0 , 21
can be prov~.ded both at the head and at the foot end,
the hand support 15 being arranged, for example,
