English Abstract

The invention provides a seamed knitting fabric and the seaming method
thereof, characterized in that a looper thread goes through at least one half
of the fabric to and fro, forming a series of semi-closed cyclic thread eye,
and accordingly goes back through the opposite side of the fabric, after
seaming, the looper thread goes through the other side, each semi-closed
thread goes through the adjacent semi-closed cyclic thread eye. Bringing back
the seaming thread by the back hook, which is in the fore part of the row
needle, forms the semi-closed cyclic thread eye. The invention has solved the
problems in the prior art by a simple structure and method. And the seaming is
smooth and firm.

SEAMED KNITTING FABRIC AND THE SEAMING METHOD THEREOF
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the invention

This invention relates to a method of seaming knitted fabric and the formation
of a
relatively flat seam in knitted fabric.

2. Background art

Knitted fabric is normally formed by rows of V-shaped or inverted V-shaped
stitches. To
join two pieces of knitted fabric together such as in the joining of the
separately knitted portions
of a knitted clothing, it is commonly accomplished by sewing together the
adjoining row of V-

shaped stitches with a binding thread or yarn. The binding thread or yarn is
threaded through the
inside edge of the entire row of V-shaped stitches located at the edge of each
knitted fabric piece.
The inside edge is located between the edge row and the second row of V-
stitches of each knitted
fabric piece. Therefore, a rib is created in the seam thus formed consisting
of the edge row of V-
shaped stitches of both knitted pieces protruding above the undersurface of
the joined knitted

fabric. The protruding rib of such seam is located in the inside surface of
the clothing, and it
causes uncomfortableness to the wearer by rubbing against the wearer's body.
Also, the increased
rubbing contact with the wearer's would cause the seam to wear faster. Thus,
it reduces the
durability of the clothing. Furthermore, the protruding seam is aesthetically
unpleasant.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple seam formation
which is
convenient to make and it eliminates the formation of protruding seam in a
unique seaming
method.

-2-
The seamed knitted fabric and the seaming method of the present invention is
characterized by threading a looper or binding thread in a to-and-fro manner
along the half leg
stitch row of the knitted V-shaped stitches in the underside of the adjoining
knitted fabric pieces
to form a series of semi-closed cyclic thread eyes along the edge half leg
stitch row of at least one

of the knitted fabric pieces. The looper thread is then return-threaded to the
other knitted fabric
piece and also coupled to the semi-closed cyclic thread eyes so as to form a
compact flat seam
between the adjoining knitted fabric pieces.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

Figure 1 shows the insertion of the looper or binding thread through the half
leg of
the edge row of V-shaped stitches of the two adjoining knitted fabric pieces.

Figure 2 shows the formation of the series of semi-closed cyclic thread eyes
by the
binding or looper thread along the half leg stitch row of at least one of the
knitted fabric pieces.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

With reference to the drawings, a seam may be formed between two knitted
fabric pieces
A and B which have rows of V-shaped or inverted V-shaped stitches located at
their underside.
Each row of the V-shaped stitches consists of two rows of half leg portion of
the V-shaped
stitches. The row of half leg portion of the V-shaped stitches is hereinafter
called a half leg stitch
row C, and the half leg stitch row located at the edge of the knitted fabric
is called an edge half
leg stitch row. According to the present invention, a binding or looper thread
E is threaded in a

to-and-fro manner along the edge half leg stitch row of at least one of the
knitted pieces to form a
series of semi-closed cyclic loop eyes D therein. The looper thread is then
return-threaded to the
opposite edge half leg stitch row of the other knitted piece for binding the
two knitted pieces A

and B together with the semi-closed cyclic loop eyes D tied to the looper
thread threaded to the
opposite edge half leg stitch row of the other knitted piece.

Alternatively, the binding or looper thread E is threaded in a to-and-fro
manner along the
edge half leg stitch row of both knitted pieces A and B to form a series of
semi-closed cyclic loop
eyes along both edge half leg stitch row of both knitted pieces A and B. The
binding or looper

thread E is then return-threaded between the semi-closed cyclic loop eyes of
both knitted pieces
A and B for forming the seam.

The method of the present invention may be carried out manually with knitting
needles or
with a dial linking machine on which the two pieces of knitted fabric are
mounted to the row of
main sewing needles and the seam binding or looper thread is carried by the
back hooks located

at the fore part of the row of sewing needles for forming the semi-closed
cyclic thread eyes. After
the formation of the seam, the free end of the binding or looper thread may be
hidden by inserting
it back into the knitted fabric after having securely knotted to the V-
stitches of said knitted fabric.
The seaming method is applicable in the manufacture of all woollen or cotton
knitted clothes

including shirts, trousers and jackets which may be worn reversibly due to the
attractive flat
seams formed according to the present invention.
