CA 02614182 2008-01-07
Description
Title
= Dual-Mode Lighting Device with Magnetically Mounted Light
Diffuser
Technical Field
= This invention relates to lighting systems with light
diffusers, more particularly to a lighting system with
magnetically mounted light diffuser.
Background Art
= There are many instances where it would be desirable to be
able to have a dual-mode lighting device with magnetically
mounted light diffuser.
= A number of patents disclose lighting systems with light
diffusers.
= U.S. Patent 3 593 021 discloses "LIGHTING FIXTURE DIFFUSER
ASSEMBLY". The lighting fixture diffuser assembly includes a
circular support member having an adhesive backing and an
opposite face formed of magnetic material. A diffuser
carrying an inwardly directed flange adjacent its open end
and mounting a plurality of magnets on the flange is applied
about the support member so that the diffuser is magnetically
secured to the support member. In another form, the magnetic
material is provided on the diffuser flange with the magnets
being secured to the support member.
= These prior art arrangements do not have a dual-mode lighting
device having a magnetically mounted planar translucent light
diffuser with a mirror coating in order to prevent light
leakage by internal reflection.
Description of the Invention
= It is a primary object of the invention to provide a dual-
mode lighting device with both task (reading) light
illumination and room lighting.
= It is another object of the invention to provide a lighting
device capable of generating downwardly directed light for a
narrow angle of illumination.
= It is another object of the invention to provide a lighting
device capable of diffusing light for a wide angle of
illumination.
1

CA 02614182 2008-01-07
= It is another object of the invention to provide a lighting
device having a magnetically mounted diffuser assembly which
attaches to and detaches from an illumination assembly.
= It is another object of the invention to provide a planar
translucent light diffuser with mirror coating in order to
prevent light leakage by internal reflection.
= A lighting device comprises an illumination assembly and a
diffuser assembly. The illumination assembly has a casing, a
light source, and a magnetic element. The diffuser assembly
has a planar translucent light diffuser, a mirror coating and
a magnetic element. The light source of the illumination
assembly is capable of generating downwardly directed light
for a narrow angle of illumination. The translucent light
diffuser of the diffuser assembly is capable of diffusing
light for a wide angle of illumination. The mirror coating is
capable of preventing light leakage from the translucent
light diffuser by internal reflection. The diffuser assembly
is capable of magnetically attaching to the illumination
assembly. The diffuser assembly is capable of detaching from
the illumination assembly when force is applied.
Brief Description of the Figures in the Drawings
= In drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention:
o Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a
lighting device according to the invention, showing task
(reading) light illumination;
o Figure 2 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a
lighting device according to the invention, showing room
lighting;
