1
WINDOW SECURITY APPARATUS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a security apparatus for mounting onto a
window, for example by being fixedly secured to an exterior surface of the
window frame
of the window, to support an auxiliary panel, for example a security barrier
or a
soundproofing barrier, alongside the panes of the window.
BACKGROUND
There are many situations where windows in buildings require protection
from damage, for example due to proximity to sporting equipment or other types
of
equipment that are known to accidentally cause damage to windows, or due to
intentional breakage by vandals or persons seeking unauthorized entry into a
building.
In this instance, it is known to support various types of security devices
over the exterior
of the window, including metal bars and the like. In some instances, the
security devices
are merely fastened to the exterior of the window, however, the fasteners are
either
difficult to remove when maintenance of the window is desired, or in the
alternative the
fasteners can be readily defeated by unauthorized persons. In other instances,

hardware is provided for using padlocks to secure a security device over a
window;
however, known hardware for securing padlocks typically have an unattractive
and
unfinished appearance at the exterior of the building.
Among the prior art, United States patents 4,478,002 by English and
6,167,656 by Devlin disclose security window panels; however, in each instance
the
panels are not well suited for mounting at the exterior of a building such
that the devices
serve primarily to restrict unauthorized entry into the building but do not
provide
protection against damage to the glass panes of the existing window.
United States patent 4,835,906 by Collin discloses an example of a

security grill for a window which mounts at the exterior of a building;
however, a costly
specially designed frame must be provided on the window for mating with unique
interlocking fasteners on the security grill.
Furthermore, none of the prior art devices enable a variety of different
types of auxiliary panels, for example for security or soundproofing, to be
readily
mounted against an existing window using the same mounting frame.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a window
security apparatus for a window having a window frame and a window pane
supported
within the window frame, the apparatus comprising:
a mounting frame comprising a first and second mounting members

the
window pane respectively, each mounting member including an inner side surface

arranged to lie parallel to and face towards the inner side surface of the
other mounting
member;
an auxiliary panel member;
a security frame comprising a plurality of frame members extending about
a perimeter of the auxiliary panel member, the frame members including a first
frame
member and a second frame member supported along opposing edges of the
auxiliary
panel member, each frame member including an outer side surface arranged to
lie
parallel to and face outwardly in an opposing direction from the outer side
surface of

respectively;
one of the first frame member of the security frame and the first mounting
member of the mounting frame comprising a first channel and another one of the
first
frame member of the security frame and the first mounting member of the
mounting
frame comprising a protrusion received within the channel in the mounted
position of
the security frame; and
one of the second frame member of the security frame and the second
mounting member of the mounting frame comprising a second channel and another
one of the second frame member of the security frame and the second mounting
member of the mounting frame comprising a lock member supported thereon;
the lock member being movable relative to the mounting frame and the
security frame in the mounted position of the security frame between a locked
position
in which the lock member protrudes into the second channel to fixedly retain
the security
frame relative to the mounting frame, and an unlocked position in which the
lock
member does not protrude into the second channel such that the security frame
is
readily separable from the mounting frame.
Use of mounting members on the mounting frame which cooperate with
frame members of a security frame at opposing sides thereof in which some of
the
members comprise channels and other ones of the members include cooperating
protrusions or a lock member thereon allows the use of extruded profiles to
form the
frames while the frames can be readily fixed or released relative to one
another.
Providing frame structures which can be readily assembled from extruded
profiles
minimizes the cost of construction of the frames and allows the frames to
accept a large
variety of different affiliate panel members therein to accommodate a
plurality of
different uses including security benefits or soundproofing benefits, etc.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Referring to the accompanying figures there is illustrated a window
security apparatus generally indicated by reference numeral 10. The apparatus
10 is
particularly suited for use with a window 12 in a building to extend over an
exterior side
of the window to protect and/or restrict access to the window.
The window includes a window frame 14 comprising a plurality of
perimeter members connected to one another about a full perimeter of the
window. The
perimeters members forming the window frame may be formed of wood, metal or
plastic. In each instance, the perimeter members of the window frame support
the
edges of one or more transparent window panes 16 formed of glass or plastic
material.
An exterior side of each perimeter member of the window frame, at an exterior
of the
building, comprises an exterior surface lying in a common plane with the
exterior
surfaces of the other perimeter members such that the exterior surfaces
commonly
define an exterior face of the window frame and of the window.
The apparatus 10 generally comprises a mounting frame 18 for mounting
in fixed relation onto the exterior face of the window and a security frame 20
which
supports an auxiliary panel member 22 therein such that the auxiliary panel
member is
releasably supported together with the security frame relative to the mounting
frame
and the window frame upon which the mounting frame is mounted.
The mounting frame 18 is assembled from a plurality of mounting
members 24 in which each mounting member comprises an extruded profile. In the

illustrated example, when the window is rectangular, a set of four mounting
members
24 are provided with 45 beveled ends so that the ends of each mounting member
are
coupled to ends of adjacent mounting members at a mitered connection to
assemble
the mounting members in series with one another about the full perimeter of
the window

8
frame so as to define a rectangular shape of the mounting frame.
Similarly, the security frame is assembled from a plurality of frame
members 26 in which each frame member comprises an extruded profile. In the
illustrated embodiment, the extruded profile of the frame members of the
security frame
and the extruded profile of the mounting members of the mounting frame are
identical
to one another so as to be produced from the same extrusion mold.
Similarly to the mounting frame, the frame members of the security frame
according to the illustrated embodiment are assembled to match the rectangular
shape
of the window such that a set of four frame members 26 are provided with 45
beveled
ends so that the ends of each frame member are coupled to the ends of adjacent
frame
members at a mitered connection. The frame members are thus assembled in
series
with one another about the full perimeter of the window frame so as to define
a
rectangular shape of the security frame.
The security frame is assembled about the perimeter of the auxiliary panel
member such that a perimeter edge of the auxiliary panel member is partly
received
internally within the mounting frame about the full perimeter thereof. A
remaining
exposed surface area of the auxiliary panel member which is not received
within the
security frame and which spans the interior opening of the security frame is
arranged
to have dimensions which are approximately equal to the exposed area of the
window
panes of the window. The interior dimensions of the security frame, that is
the
dimensions of the interior opening of the security frame, corresponds
approximately to
the dimensions of the interior opening of the window frame supporting the
window
panes therein.
The mounting frame is sized to be slightly larger in dimensions than the
security frame such that an interior dimension of a main body portion of the
mounting

9
members 24 about the interior opening that is surrounded by the mounting frame
corresponds approximately to an outer dimension of a main body portion of the
frame
members 26 of the security frame about the interior opening of the security
frame.
The extruded profile forming each mounting member 24 of the mounting
frame and each frame member 26 of the security frame has a main body portion
28
which is generally rectangular in shape. An overall width of the main body
portion is
defined between a first mounting face 30 and an opposing second face 32 which
are
parallel and spaced apart from one another.
A protruding flange 34 is joined to the main body portion 28 to protrude
outwardly beyond the rectangular boundary of the main body portion. The
protruding
flange 34 is oriented to project perpendicularly to the first mounting face 30
outward of
the main body portion from one of the side edges of the first mounting face
30.
The main body portion 28 also includes an overall depth in a direction
perpendicular to the width which extends between a proximal face 36 which is
substantially coplanar with the protruding flange 34 so as to be in close
proximity to the
protruding flange, and a distal face 38 at an opposing side of the main body
portion so
as to lie parallel and spaced apart from the flange 34 at the proximal face
36.
The profile is further provided with a mounting channel 40 formed therein
which is recessed inwardly into the interior of the rectangular boundary of
the main body
portion 28 while having an opening formed in the first mounting face 30 of the
profile.
The mounting channel 40 thus defines a groove which is recessed inwardly into
the
main body portion relative to the first mounting face 30 at an intermediate
location
between the proximal face and the distal face.
The profile further includes a panel slot 42 formed therein which is
.. recessed inwardly into the interior of the rectangular boundary of the main
body portion

10
while having an opening formed in the second face 32 of the profile. The panel
slot 42
thus defines a groove which is recessed inwardly into the main body portion
relative to
the second face 32. The panel slot is located immediately adjacent the
proximal face of
the main body portion 28.
Each of the mounting channel 40 and the panel slot 42 thus defines a
generally U-shaped channel having an open side within the respective exterior
face of
the rectangular boundary of the main body portion 28. The inner boundaries
forming
the U-shape of each mounting channel is formed by inner partition walls 44
within the
hollow interior of the main body portion 28.
The profile further includes two fastener channels 46 in which each
fastener channel has a generally circular boundary extending in the
longitudinal
direction of the extruded profile. Each fastener channel may include a slotted
opening
formed in the boundary thereof such that the fastener channel is generally C-
shaped
with the slotted opening being open to the hollow interior internally within
the boundary
of the main body portion 28. The fastener channels 46 are supported within the
hollow
interior of the main body portion 28 by being joined to inner surfaces of the
boundary
walls of the main body portion or by being joined to the inner partition walls
44 of the
profile that form the inner boundaries of the mounting channel and/or the
panel slot 42
such that the fastener channels are structurally supported in fixed relation
to one
another and to the rectangular boundary of the main body portion 28.
When abutting the mitered ends of two frame members or two mounting
members to assemble the security frame or the mounting frame respectively,
threaded
fasteners 48 can be penetrated perpendicularly through the end of one of the
members
24 or 26 in alignment with the fastener channels 46 in the other one of the
members 24
or 26 so that the threaded fasteners can be used to securely join the members
Date Recue/Date Received 2020-04-22

11
mechanically to one another about the perimeter of the respective frame.
The mounting frame 18 is assembled from the mounting members such
that the flange 34 and the proximal face 36 of the profile located at the
interior side are
arranged for abutment in parallel arrangement directly against the exterior
face of the
window frame in a mounted position. The flanges 34 are oriented to protrude
inwardly
such that each protruding flange 34 extends inwardly towards the mounting
member at
the opposing side of the window. The mounting flanges 34 thus lie in a common
plane
with one another extending inwardly into the interior opening of the mounting
frame that
receives the security frame therein in the mounted position.
In the illustrated embodiment, a first one of the mounting members 24 is
positioned across a top side of the window frame and an opposing second
mounting
member 24 is positioned across a bottom of the window frame. The first
mounting face
30 of each mounting member thus defines an inner side surface which faces
inwardly
towards the inner side surface of the opposing mounting member. These inner
side
surfaces are oriented parallel to one another while projecting perpendicularly
outward
from the exterior face of the window frame. The mounting channels 40 located
within
each inner side surface thus similarly have open sides that face inwardly
towards one
another. Alternatively, the panel slots 42 located in the second faces 32 of
the mounting
members 24 face outwardly and away from the opposing mounting members.
The security frame 20 is assembled from the frame members 26 such that
the flange 34 and the proximal face 36 of the profile are located at the
exterior side of
the security frame, positioned farthest away from the window frame in the
mounted
position. The flanges are oriented to protrude outwardly such that each
protruding
flange 34 extends outwardly away from the frame member at the opposing side of
the
window. The protruding flanges 34 thus lie in a common plane with one another
while
Date Recue/Date Received 2020-04-22

12
extending outwardly beyond a rectangular boundary defined by the main body
portions
28 of the security frame, about the full perimeter of the security frame. When
the security
frame is partly inserted into the mounting frame in the mounted position
thereof, the
flanges 34 of the security frame overlap the seam between the main body
portions of
the mounting frame and the main body portions of the security frame so that
each flange
overlaps a portion of the exterior side of the mounting frame as defined by
the distal
faces 38 of the mounting members 24 about the full perimeter of the window
frame.
Also in the illustrated embodiment, a first one of the frame members 26
of the security frame is positioned across a top side of the window frame and
an
opposing second frame member of the security frame is positioned across a
bottom of
the window frame. The second face 30 of each frame member 26 thus defines an
inner
side surface which faces inwardly towards the inner side surface of the
opposing frame
member. The inner side surfaces 30 of the frame members of the security frame
are
oriented parallel to one another while projecting perpendicularly outward from
the
exterior face of the window frame. The panel slots 42 located within each
inner side
surface thus face inwardly towards one another as well. The panel slots 42 are
thus
suitably oriented for receiving respective perimeter edges of the auxiliary
panel member
22 inserted therein as the frame members 26 of the security frame are
assembled about
the auxiliary panel member 22.
The first mounting face 30 of each frame member 26 defines an outer
side surface which faces outwardly away from the opposing frame member. The
outer
side surfaces 30 of the frame members of the security frame are thus parallel
to the
other outer side surfaces and perpendicular to the exterior face of the window
frame
from which they project. The mounting channels 40 located within each frame
member
26 are thus located within the outer side surface to similarly face outwardly
away from
Date Recue/Date Received 2020-04-22

13
the opposing frame member at the other side of the frame.
An outer dimension between the outer side surfaces of opposed frame
members 26 of the security frame located at opposing top and bottom ends of
the
window frame or at laterally opposing sides of the window frame is slightly
less than the
corresponding inner dimension between the inner side surfaces of corresponding

opposed mounting members 24 of the mounting frame to enable insertion of the
main
body portions of the profiles of the security frame within the interior
opening defined by
the main body portions of the profiles of the mounting frame.
More particularly in the mounted position of the security frame received
within the mounting frame, the outer side surfaces 30 of the first and second
frame
members 26 are located parallel to and in close proximity to respective ones
of the inner
side surfaces 30 of the first and second mounting members 24 at the opposing
top and
bottom sides of the window frame respectively. In addition, in the mounted
position of
the security frame within the mounting frame, the distal face 38 of the frame
members
of the security frame are located in close proximity in overlapping
arrangement overtop
of respective ones of the flanges 34 of the mounting member 24 of the mounting
frame.
When the security frame is removed from the mounting frame, the
protruding flanges 34 at the interior of the mounting members 24 of the
mounting frame
are exposed and readily enable fasteners to be penetrated through the flange
into the
window frame for securely fastening the mounting frame in direct abutment with
the
exterior face of the window frame. Insertion of the security frame into the
mounting
frame results in the main body portion 28 of the profiles of the security
frame
overlapping the flange 34 of the mounting frame such that the fasteners that
secure the
mounting frames to the window frame are covered by the security frame to
restrict
access by unauthorized persons.

14
The security frame is selectively retained in the mounted position relative
to the mounting frame by a set of mounting tabs 50 operatively connected
between the
first frame member of the security frame and the first mounting member of the
mounting
frame, together with a lock assembly 52 operatively connected between the
second
frame member of the security frame and the second mounting member of the
mounting
frame.
The mounting tabs 50 each comprise a rigid metal plate of suitable
dimension such that the plate can be partially recessed into the mounting
channel 40
in the first frame member of the security frame 20 so as to protrude outwardly
from the
channel beyond the corresponding mounting face 30 of the frame member. The
mounting tabs 50 are mounted at longitudinally spaced apart positions along
the first
frame member of the security frame. The mounting tabs 50 are arranged to
protrude
from the mounting face 30 of the frame member by a suitable distance to ensure
a free
end portion of each tab is receivable within the corresponding mounting
channel 40 of
the first mounting member of the mounting frame 18. In a preferred embodiment,
the
mounting tabs are secured in fixed relation to the security frame, for example
using
adhesive or transverse fasteners so as to define respective protrusions which
protrude
outwardly from the corresponding mounting face 30 of the frame member of the
security
frame. The protrusions formed by the protruding portion of each mounting tab
50 may
be slightly undersized relative to the dimensions of the mounting channel 40
in the
mounting frame so as to permit the ready insertion of the protruding portions
of the
mounting tabs 50 into and ready removal of the tabs from the mounting channel
40 in
the mounting frame 18 as the security frame is inserted into the mounting
frame and
removed from the mounting frame in use.
In the illustrated embodiment, the lock assembly 52 is mounted on the

second frame member at the bottom of the security frame so as to be located
opposite
from the mounting tabs 50 at the top of the window frame. The lock assembly 52

generally includes a lock housing 54 supported on the external face of the
bottom frame
member 26 of the security frame. A pivot shaft 56 is oriented perpendicularly
to the
longitudinal direction of the frame member and perpendicularly to the
auxiliary panel
member spanning the interior opening of the security frame. The shaft 56 is
supported
to be pivotal about a longitudinal axis of the shaft relative to the lock
housing 54
receiving the shaft therein.
A socket 58 is formed at the exterior end of the shaft 56 supported within
a respective opening at the exterior side of the lock housing 54. The socket
58
preferably comprises a security socket having a unique shape which is uncommon

among readily available tools so as to restrict access to unauthorized
persons.
Alternatively, the socket may be a keyhole which cooperates with a series
of pin slots locating lock pins therein which are operatively connected
between the shaft
56 and the lock housing 54 to prevent rotation of the shaft relative to the
lock housing
unless a suitable key is inserted into the socket for displacing the lock pins
away from
a shear plane between the shaft and the lock housing in the conventional
manner of a
lock housing to further restrict access by unauthorized persons.
A lock member 60 extends radially outward from the pivot shaft 56
towards an inner end of the shaft in alignment with the mounting channel 40 of
the
second frame member of the security frame. The lock member is pivotal with the
pivot
shaft 56 between (i) a locked position in which the lock member protrudes
outwardly
beyond the inner side surface 30 of the second frame member of the security
frame to
protrude into the corresponding mounting channel 40 in the bottom mounting
member
24 of the mounting frame 38 and (ii) an unlocked position in which the lock
member 60

does not protrude outwardly beyond the first mounting face 30 so as to remain
within
the rectangular boundary of the main body portion of the bottom frame member
of the
security frame. In the locked position, the lock member 60 acts similarly to
the mounting
tabs 50 so as to prevent the bottom of the security frame from being displaced
perpendicularly outward from the mounting frame and the window frame upon
which it
is supported.
In order to use the apparatus 10 on a window frame 12, the user initially
assembles a mounting frame 18 from profiles defining the mounting members 24
of the
mounting frame and mounts the mounting frame in fixed relation to the window
frame
using fasteners penetrated through the flanges 34 and into the exterior face
of the
window frame. The security frame 20 is similarly formed using profiles to form
the frame
members 26. The mounting tabs 50 are inserted into the channel 40 at one side
of the
security frame and the lock assembly 52 is integrally mounted onto the
corresponding
frame member 26 of the opposing side of the security frame relative to the
tabs 50.
Installation of the security frame onto the mounting frame involves
insertion of the tabs 50 at one end of the security frame into the
corresponding mounting
channel 40 of the mounting frame by initially positioning the security frame
in transverse
relation to the mounting frame as shown in Figure 2, followed by insertion of
the first
frame member locating the mounting tabs therein into the mounting frame prior
to
insertion of the second frame member at the opposing end of the security frame
into
the mounting frame. Pivoting of the security frame about an axis extending
between the
mounting tabs 50 as the mounting tabs are inserted into the channel 40 on the
mounting
frame allows the second frame member at the opposing end of the security frame
to be
subsequently inserted into the mounting frame. Once the security frame is
fully inserted
into the mounting frame, the lock member can be actuated from the unlocked
position

to the locked position to fully restrict the security frame within the
mounting frame.
The auxiliary panel member 22 may comprise a variety of different types
of panels depending upon the particular application of the apparatus 10. In
each
instance the auxiliary panel member comprises a rigid panel which is slightly
oversized
in dimension relative to the interior opening of the security frame such that
a perimeter
portion of the panel member adjacent the perimeter edge about the full
perimeter of the
panel member is received into the corresponding panel slots 42 of the security
frame
about the full perimeter thereof. Assembly of the security frame about the
auxiliary panel
member 22 effectively locks the panel member into the security frame.
In some embodiments the panel member comprises a window pane, for
example formed of tempered glass, mesh reinforced glass or a plastic material
having
greater strength or impact resistance than the window panes of the window. In
each
instance the window pane is a transparent or translucent material.
Alternatively, the auxiliary panel member 22 may comprise a rigid metal
screen, for example a perimeter frame locating a plurality of rigid bars
spanning across
the height or width of the frame, or a rigid mesh.
In yet further embodiments, the auxiliary panel member may comprise a
soundproof barrier formed of a transparent or translucent window pane of a
material
which may be denser or thicker than the window panes of the window to provide
soundproofing to the window when mounted thereon.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as herein above
described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made, it
is
intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be
interpreted
as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
