ABSTRACT
A glazing system for use with either vertical, horizontal or
inclined glazing consists of flat glazing material having parallel surfaces
and linear edges and a two part glazing bar consisting of two substantially
rigid sectional strips of extruded light metal, hard or hard elastic
plastics material, wherein the strips each have a leg engaging over the
edge of the glazing material, said legs each having a surface disposed
substantially parallel to the glazing material and being substantially
parallel to each other, each of which legs are in contact with one of the
two surfaces of the glazing material, and wherein the two strips further
include means providing a snap connection between them which forms a
connecting web between the legs, at least one leg having on its surface
the glazing material and parallel thereto and inwardly of the edge thereof
an integral web. The web serves to remain in direct contact with the
glazing material and a glazing system is thus provided which makes no use
of soft resilient sealing materials but where the glazing material is
contacted solely by parts of the rigid glazing bar, water channels being
provided for the removal of any water which may run down the inner or outer
surfaces of the glazing material.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A glazing system consisting of flat glazing material
having parallel surfaces and linear edges and a two part
glazing bar consisting of two substantially rigid sectional
strips of extruded light metal, hard or hard elastic plastics
material, wherein the strips each have a leg engaging over
the edge of the glazing material, said legs each having a
surface disposed substantially parallel to the glazing material
and being substantially parallel to each other, each of which
legs are in contact with one of the two surfaces of the glazing
material, and wherein the two strips further include means
providing a snap connection between them which forms a
connecting web between the legs, at least one leg having on
its surface facing the glazing material and parallel thereto
and inwardly of the edge thereof an integral web which makes
direct contact with the surface of the glazing material and
forms with the glazing material and with the surface of the
leg a water channel on each side of said integral web.
2. A glazing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein each
strip has a leg on each side thereof.
3. A glazing system as claimed in claim 2 wherein each of
the legs on one of said strips is provided with an integral
web extending along the length of the strip.
4. A glazing system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said
integral web extending along the length of the strip is

narrower at its junction with said leg than at its end
which serves to contact the glazing material.
5. A glazing system as claimed in claim 3 wherein said
integral web extending along the length of the strip is
narrower at its junction with said leg than at its end
which serves to contact the glazing material.

This invention concerns glazing bars and more
particularly a two-part glazing bar consisting of
two sectional strips which are detachable from one
another. The two strips are joined together by a
releasable web and each have at least one leg by means
of which the glazing material is held in place from
each side. Sectional bars of this kind are customary
in the installation of fixedly mounted glazing and
serve predominantly to seal the expansion joints between
adjacent glazing elements. In this case, they are
symmetrical in construction, i.e. both sectional strips
have a leg on each side of the connecting web.
In order to connect the bar to the glazing material
in a watertight manner, soft elastic strips are generally
inserted at the point of contact between the bar and the
glazing material. It is an object of the invention to
provide a substantially watertight connection between the
glazing and the glazing bar without using a soft elastic
intermediate layer. At the same time, in a preferred
embodiment of the invention, water running off the glazing
pane, for example condensation occurring on the inside of
the glass, is prevented from running over a transverse bar
from one pan to another or, in the case of glazing in an
inclined position, for example in a greenhouse, from
dripping off such transverse bar.

According to the invention there is provided a glazing
system consisting of flat glazing material having parallel surfaces
and linear edges and a two part glazing bar consisting of two substan- -
tially rigid sectional strips of extruded light metal, hard or hard
elastic plastics material, wherein the strips each have a leg engaging
over the edge of the glazing material, said legs each having a surface
disposed substantially parallel to the glazing material and being
substantially parallel to each other, each of which legs are in contact
with one of the two surfaces of the glazing material, and wherein the
two strips further include means providing a snap connection between
them which forms a connecting web between the legs, at least one leg
having on its surface facing the glazing material and parallel thereto
and inwardly of the edge thereof an integral web which makes direct con-
tact with the surface of the glazing material and forms wi~h the glazing
material and with the surface of the leg a water channel on each side of
said integral web.
The accompanying drawing shows in cross section a preferred
embodiment of the invention in the form of a two legged sectional
glazing bar used as a butt joint.
The two part sectional glazing bar consists of two
sectional strips 1 and 2 which are connected together by means of
a detachable connecting web 3, 4. Each strip has on each side
of the connecting web, a leg 5, 6, the legs, in use, being more
or less parallel to one another. According to this invention at
least one of the legs 5 has inside the inner surface of the
glazing a web 7 extending along the length of the strip. This
web 7 represents the sole contact between the leg 5 and the
glazing material, which means that the inner surface of the leg
on both sides of the web 7 is spaced from the glazing material by
an amount corresponding to the height of the web. If both the

strips which make up the glazing bar are not constructed in this way
and according to the invention, at least the strip used on the inside
of the glazing is provided with webs 7.
Between the web 7 and the inner surface of the leg 5,
water channels 11 and 12 are formed on each side of the web 7 after
assembly. With a horizontal or inclined installation of glazing,
water which has penetrated into the sectional space 13 from outside
or which has formed as condensation on the inside of the glazing
material 14 collects in the channels 11 or 12 and is prevented by
the web 7 from passing through to the other side of the glazing.
When the bar is mounted as a transverse bar in vertical glazing, it
has proved advantageous if the web 7 is narrower at its junction 8
with the leg than at the top 9 which contacts the glazing element
so that the water collects in the channel formed at the base of
the web and is kept away from the area of contact of top 9 with the
glazing 14, which is only watertight to a limited extent. The
water collecting in the channels is conducted to the ends of the
sectional bar, with the result that it no longer passes to the
other side of the glazing, or runs away over the bar or drips from
it. It is not necessary to have any water removal system for the

condensation collecting in the outer channels 12 if
condensation is only expected to form for short periods
and the water can evaporate out of the channel unaided.
Sectional glazing bars according to the invention
can be of one sided construction, so that they can
extend around the periphery of a sheet of glazing
material or they can, as shown, be of symmetrical
construction to act as a butt joint. The two sectional
strips 1 and 2 may be connected to one another, in any
desired manner, by means of a releasable web. Resilient
or snap connections wherein an edge bead 15 engages in
sprung tongues 4 are particularly suitable. The sectional
strips 1 and 2 may be made from light metal or from a
hard or hard/elastic plastics material by extrusion.
They are suitable for installing vertical, inclined or
horizontal glazing made from planar glazing materials,
such as for example mineral glass, wire reinforced glass,
plastics sheets and, for example, hollow sectional sheets
made of plastics, consisting of two planar covering layers
and intermediate webs extending perpendicular to said
layers.
In order to make facilitate assembly, a threaded
groove 16 may be provided in the connecting web 3.
