1 0~
This invention relates to a device for coping
tubular metal workpieces, the said device being equipped
with a die-housing which is adapted to receive the end of
the workpiece and into which the cutting aperture is
machined. Adjoining the said cutting aperture is a slide
for a ram which fits closely therein and moves at right
angles to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. The
periphery of the ram is equipped with cutters on the side
facing the die-housing cutting aperture and in the vicinity
thereof. In this known device, different rams and
different die-housings are required for pipes of different
diameters. For this reason, devices of this kind are
usually stantionary, the pipes being processed in the
device and then taken to ~e work site.
In assembly work, for example installing a central-
heating system, requiring pipes of various sizes, prepared
lengths of pipe are usually filed and ground as required
in situ. This involves a considerable amount of time
and labour.
According to one aspect of the present invention
a device for coping tubu~r metal workpieces comprises a
die-housing in which the cutting aperture is machined
and an adjoining slide for a ram adapted to move in the
said slide at right angles to the longitudinal axis of
the workpiece and fitting closely in the said slide, the
said ram also having cutters at its periphery, in the
vicinity of the cutting aperture inthe die, on the side
fa~ing the said aperture, characterized in that the slide
is in the form of a bore located in ~he die-housing and
surrounding the ram, a plurality of cutting apertures

for workpieces of different diameters, being provided
in the said die-housing and corresponding cutters being
provided on the ram and the said bore having stepped
diametersadapted to each other.
The device of the present invention is preferably
adapted so as to be suitable for use at a work site and
to be capable of coping pipes of diameters of the type
generally used at the work site.
The device according to one aspect of the
invention provides a tool which is easily operated by hand,
since reliable guidance of the ram is assured, and which
comprises a plurality of cutting apertures, thus making
it possible to process pipes of the diameters normally
used with a single tool.
In addition, adjustable stops are preferably
provided for controlling the extent to which a m~tal
workpiece may be inserted into the die so as to control
~- the degree of copi~g formed on the workpiece.
In addition, the device of the present invention
is preferably portable so as to be easily m~vable from
one job site to another.
The invention will be more clearly understood
after reference to the following detailed specification
read in conjunction with the drawings wherein;
Fig. 1 is a p æ ti~l section through the device;
Fig. 2 is a view of a coped pipe;
Fig. 3 shows, to a different scale, the device
fitted to a mobile stand.
The device consists essentially of a die-housing
1, only a part of which is shown in the drawing. The said

die-housing may be substantially longer for a wider range
of application. It comprises a longitudinal bore 2
stepped into different diameters. I~ the example illustrated
three diameters A, B and C are shown. ~bviously more
such steps may be provided if required.
Arranged in the lateral wall of the die-housing,
at each diameter, is a cutting aperture 3, 4 or 5 which
is slightly conical in order to facilitate insertion of
he workpiece to ~e processed. Guided in bore 2 is a
ram 6 equipped with a cutter 7, 8 or 9 in the vicinity of
each of the said cutting apertures, the said cutting edges
running in the direction of the longitudinal axis of housing
1, thus making it possible to cut and cope the workpiece
inserted in the relevant aperture. Ram 6 may be actuated
by an eccentric 10, of which Fig. 1 shows only the actual
eccentric part and a lever 11. For the sake of clarity,
a toggle lever, used to simplify the drive, has been
omitted from ~e drawing.
Located in the vicinity of each cutter 7, 8, 9
is a stop 12, 13 14 in the form of an ad~usting screw
which may be used to control the depth of insertion of the
workpiece.
The type of coping is shown in Fig. 2 illustrating
a tubular workpiece 15. It will be seen that a single
stroke of ram 6 produces a single arcuate cut. If two
such cuts are required , the workpiece must be rotated
through 180 or less.
Fig. 3 shows a stand which is generally identified
by the numexal 16. The stand 16 is equipped with cc- -
operating struts, and carries at its upper end two retainers,

one of which, 17, is shown in the drawing. Secured to
retainer 17, by means of bolts 18, 19, is the actual
die-housing 1. Cutting apertures 3,4, 5 are also
visible in the drawing.
