2~
The pressnt inv~ntion relates to a method to prsvsnt unauthorized
use of combustion engina-driven vehiclss, ships~other 0quipmant, as wsll
as combu~tion enginss only, and a d~vice according to th0 method.
It is previDusly known a demand for a ~sthod to pr~vent ths~t
of combustion ~ngin~-d~iven ~ah~cles, aquipment, ships and othar devic~s,
e.g. th~ft of cars, mopeds, motorcyclas, small maritime crafts, ~tc.,
which are ~ery dasirable, since they can easily be transportsd away from
ons location to anothar, whereaftar existing locking devices are brought
out of function.
Th~ objsct of tha present inven$ion i~ to disclose a method to
establish an e~f~ctiva protection againQt unsuthorizad u~a, e g. in
connection with theft, thus indirectly acting as a th~t prevention
protoction, ~ince th~ft does not make it possible to us~ th~ stol~n
object. The present invantion also concerns a d~vic8, intended to be
sttachsd to a combustion engine, which rnakes it possibls to utiliz~ the
mathod.
Previously known m0thods to prevent use of vahiclas or other objects
p~opelled by combustion engins3 includ0 eonventional locking dsvic~ e.gO
steering wheel locks, gear stick locks and locklng means for a wh0sl of
a mopsd or a motorcycl2, locking means pr~vanting rsmoval of outhoard
engines and other similar locking dGvic2s, and locking davices ~or the
ignitinn~ which pravsnt olo~ing o~ the slectrical circuit o~ the ignition
systsm if a key b~longing to ths lock is not available. Th~ last-
mentioned typs of locks can bs aasily by passad with ra~psct to th2 ignition
oircuit~ and ths circuit to the slsctrical starter motor can also ~asily be
by-pass2d ~or thosa asss, wh~n th~ start~r motor circuit forms a part
influenc~d by the ignition lock mechani~m.
Ths method, and th~ d~vice for utilizing the msthod aocording to
the prescnt invention~ i~ based on a completely diff~r0nt and novel msthod3
but could basically be r~gard~d as an improvement o~ th~ protection for ths
ignition circuit. The posqibility to by-pa3s is completely sliminated9
as wall as the possibility to r~movs ths devica according to tha
invflntion for an unauthorized perYon~ It i8 0a~ily undsr~tood that th~
-2-

pos~ibility for unauthorizsd use is hereby oompletQly aliminstHd, and that
previously knewn thsPt protection maans do not have this security.
An ambodiment of a devica according to the method in respect of the
pressnt invention is more ~ully described bslow with rsParsnca to tha
snclosed drawings, and the mainly charaoteristic fsature~ D~ the msthod
according to the preaent invantion 9 and Por the davic~ acoording to ths
mathod, ara disclDsad in tha Pollowing desoriptiva part of the ~p~oification
and the claims.

according to the method disclosad in th~ present invention, attaohsd to tha
cylinder hsad ~f a ~mbusti~n engine;
Flgure 2 iæ a plan view Prom above of the device a~ shown in FigA
1, tha ~rr~unding tubular part oeing shown in crn~s-~ection at a point
below ths horl~ontal oloYed portion of tha tubular part;
Figure 3 is a cross-seotional view corresponding to Figr 1 with
th~ devica in the locked positlon which pre~ents ramoval o~ ths d~vioe by un-
authorized person~; and
Figur~ 4 is a cross-sectional view correRpondlng to Fig. 1 ~P a
slightly modified embodiment of a davica ~r utilizing the msthod acoording
2û to the prssent invention.
With referencs to Flgura 1, re~erence numeral 1 indlcat~s a
~urrounding tubular member~ rotatably connacted to an attachmant member
2 havdng an sxternal screw thread. Said attachm~nt i8 in tha shown
embodlment accomplishad by msan3 of an intarnal groove arrangao in the
lower part of the t~bular member 1, which, by mean~ of a spring ring 3,
is attached to a corresponding external groove in the upper portion o~
ths attachment member 2. The method to join the tubular member 1 and
the attachment ~zmber 2 can obviously be variad in a large numb~r of
previou~ly known ways, e~g. by arranging tha attachmant memb~r 2 with an
sxternal surroanding flange anà the tubular member 1 with a groove by the
internal ~ree edge portion, whereafter the tubular memb~r 1 i~ attaohed
rotatably with th~ surrounding flangs of the attachment mamb~r 2, e~g.
by means Df ds~ormation. Further variation3 in ths method to accomplish ~aid
~ 3 --

attach~ent are previously w811 known and th~re~ore n~ discuss~d.
The tubular mambar embraces a locking mechanigm 4, erranged with
a number of locking mamb~rs 5, 5', 5~'9 which are arranged to int~rlock
with co-operating interlncking means, such as grooves or similar, arr~nged
both at the inside peripheral p~rt o~ the tubular member 1 and th~ surfaca
facing the locking mechanism 4 of the attachment memb3r 2.
In Figures 1 and 2 are the davice shown with the locking memb~rs
5, 5', 5" arranged in a position extending away from the locking meohanism
4, i.e~ in interlocking contact with both the tubular mambsr 1 and the
lû attaohment member 2~ S~id members 1 and 2 are thus joinsd to sach other
in a non-rot~table or movable r01ationship, which makss it po~sible to
transfer a rotating movement ~rom the tubular mHmbsr 1 to the ~tt~ohment
membar 2. The tubular member i8 in tho ~hown smbodiment arrang~d with an
external hHxagonal shape, which maks3 it possibls to attaoh a conventional
spanner o~ spark plug type.
Said embodiment is attached to the cylinder he~d of a cumbustion
sngine in the ~ollowlng manner. First i9 a spark plug, attached to tha
cylindHr head, removsd, whereafter the devioa, with ths locking mechanism 4
in such 8 state that tha locking members 5, 5', 5" are arrangad in a position
corresponding to F~guras 1 and 2~ i~ screwad into the oylinder head in a
way corrssponding to a spark plug. When th2 davice ha~ been attached in
a describ~d mann0r, the locking m0chanism 4 is inPluenced by means of a key
6 (only partly shown) in such a way, that the locking membars 5, S~, S~'
are retracted to a position embraced by the locking mechanism 43 as shown
in Fig. 3. The tubular mEmb0r 1 is thus "rsle~d" ~rom the attaohment
member 2~ a~ well as thH locking mechanism 4 ~rom both the tubular member 1
and the attachm0nt member 2. The davice can hareby not be remoued from the
cylinder head 9 since both the tubular membar 1 and the locking merhanism 4
fre~ly can be rotated in relation to thH attachment mamber 2~ The 0ngin0
cannot-now be usad, 9ino9 there is no pos~ible way to sttaoh a spark plug.
In Figure~ 1 and 3, the portion of th~ attaohment mHmb~r 2 directed
towards the piston in the engine is shown ~ point~d member 75 in order to
accomplish daformation o~ th~ pi~ton in the engln~ in connection with
- 4

unauthori~ed attempt to start th~ snginQ with the device attachsd. Said
de~ormation pr~vsnts th~ piston from running and functioning as d~sired
in ths cylinder, but also obvi~usly a damag~ that will require rapair and
thus rspair costs.
An altarnative smbod~m~nt is shown in Fig. 47 according to which
the pointe~ portion 7 is arranged with a thr~aded part 9 arranged to
facilitato attachm~nt to a hole with a corresponding int~rnal scr0w thrsad
arrangad in the attachment membsr 2. Hareby it is possibla to chDos~ whsthsr
or not this ~xtra th~ft-pr~ventive m~anq should ba used sr not~ which can
bs regardsd as necassary in certain cases, e.g. if ths device is used to
raplace one spark plug only in a multi-cylind~r en9ine, such a~ 4- 9 6~ or 8-
cylinder engines~ in which cage~ th2 englnQ can ~unction with low e~iciency
even if one spark plug i9 mis~ing. Tha point~d part can b~ dismissed for
multi-cylinder sngines9 provid~d that two or more dsvices according to th~
present invsntion ars att~ch~d.
The shown and d~so~bed ~mbodiment, with modi~ication ac¢ording to
Fig. 4, i9 only int~ndad to serve as an exampl~ o~ an ~mbodiment within
th~ scope oF ths pressnt invention, which mothod basically compris~s of
ths use o~ a lockable d~vice att~chsd in po ition o~ a removed spark plug or
a numbsr of spark plugs in a combustion ~ngins, which permit altsrnativaly a
locksd, and a rotabls ioint with an attachmsnt m~mb~r having an extsrnal
screw thread corresponding to the extsrnal thr~ad o~ the removed spark plug.
Ths t~bular m~mb~r i8 also pr~rably arrang~d with an extsrnal shap~ corre~
ponding to ths portion of tho spark plug ussd ~or interlock1ng purpos3s with
a tubular spanner o~ spark plug typs9 whsreby attachmsnt, ~nd removal, can
b~ carrisd out using conventional toal31 providsd that ths lwking mechanism
has bs~n brought to unrotatably Join the attachmQrlt memb~r and the tubular
member~
Ths locking msmber~ 5~ 5', 5~, forming a park o~ the locking machaniqm
47 aro prsferably arranged springloaded in such a way that a locking movament
by means of tha correspondingrnkay ~ causas ths locking mambers 5, 5', 5" to
take up contact with tha insid~ peripheral sur~acs of tha tubular m~rnber
1 and tho uppar plana of tha attachment m~mber 2 respectively, so that tha

\
locking mambers interlock with resp0ctiv~ part9 l and 2, a~ ~oon as tha
tubular member has bean rotatad to surh a position, that the locking m~mb~r~
S, 5~, 5" can intarlDck with the co-acting intarlocking maans arrangad in tha
member~ l and 2 respectively.
Tha tubular member l is al90 pre~erably manu~artursd ~rom.a
material with high resistanca against appliad outsida ~orca, a.g~ hardenad
stesl or carbide ~tael. Haraby ara all attempts to bring th~ davice out of
order by m0ans o~ fDrcas applisd to the tubular member l effectively
prevanted.
It should also ba emphasized that the shown embodim0nt can be
modifiad in a larga numbar of ways, without depsrting ~rom tha important and
charactaristio Faatures of tha method according to tha prasant invention.
Thu.Q, it is possible in certain cases to arranga tha locking
mechanism 4 attach0d to either thQ tubular memb~r l or tha attachment
membar 29 having lock7ng mambars 59 51, 511, which can ~ake up an interlock2d
relationship with the remaining mambar.
Also, many othar embodiments ara possibl~ within tha scope o~ the
invantiva thought and the ~ollowing claims.
