WAD FOR MAKING CARTRIDGES WITH SINGLE PROJECTILE
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A wad for use with a single projectile for a firearm is
made of a plastic material and serves as a container for the
projectile. The external, cylindrical surface of the container
including a plurality of radial, helicoidal fins and grooves.
Inner, longitudinally extending and radially oriented fins
support the projectile and permit transport of air to the base
wall of the container.

Revendications

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH
AN EXLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED
ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS
1. A wad adapted for coupling a projectile
to a cartridge having an outer wall, said wad comprising a
plastic cylindrical body having a maximum outside diameter
substantially equal to the inside diameter of the shell
of the cartridge, said wad having an open-ended axially
arranged, cylindrical cavity including a base wall that is
adapted to receive the projectile, the base wall of the
cavity including a central, axially extending nose that
is adapted to be contacted by and which is adapted to
support only the central portion of the projectile, the
internal wall surface of the cavity being provided with a
plurality of circumferentially spaced apart grooves defined
by a plurality of axially extending, circumferentially
spaced apart radially oriented fins, said grooves extending
from the base wall of the cavity at a location below the
nose and therefore from axially behind the projectile to
the open end of the cavity.
2. The wad according to claim 1, wherein the
radially innermost end of each of said fins, in combina-
tion, defines a diameter that is at least substantially
equal to the diameter of the projectile so that the pro-
jectile is frictionally retained within the cavity.

3. A wad for coupling a projectile to a cartridge
according to claim 1, wherein said cylindrical body has an
exterior surface with a plurality of circumferentially
spaced radial fins defining helicoid grooves therebetween.
4. A wad according to claim 1, wherein the
exterior surface of said cylindrical body tapers outwardly
in a direction toward its base.

2~i~
WAD FOR MAKI~G CARTRIDGES WITH SI~GLE PROJECTILE
The present invention relates to a wad for making
cartridges wikh single projectile to be used in hunting
rifles and, more particularly, it relates to a wad stamped
in plastic material and shaped like a container that
encloses the projectile.
With hunting rifles of the smooth bore type and used
in specified types of hunts, one might utilize single shot
projectiles or spherical projectiles, so that the cart-
ridges must be prepared accordingly. EIeretofore, as single
projectiles, one used conventional projectiles consisting
of a single lead body or of a lead body with one or more
wads attached to the base of the body. Invariably, however,
the known projectiles have always been made and used with
a diameter corresponding to the inner diameter of the barrel.
Therefore, each type of projectile may be used substantially
solely with rifles having a barrel with an inner diameter
corresponding to the diameter of the projectile. Hereto-
fore, therefore, it was not possible to use single projec-
tiles of diameters smaller than that of the barrel.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to
provide a wad for making cartridges with single projectile,
said wad permitting the use of projectiles of I.D. even
smaller tha~ that of the barrel or the rifles to be used.

5~
It is another object of the invention to provide a
wad shaped like a container for enveloping the single
projectile and acting substantially as caliber reducer or
adaptor to adapt the diàmeter of ~he projectile to that
of the karrel of the rifle and to permit the propulsion of
the projectile without contacting the barrelO
It is still another object of the invention to provide
a wad, for the purpose indicated above, advantageously
stamped in plastic and having outer directional fins or
wings and inner threading so as to permit both a correct
shooting of projectile and the detachment thereof from the
wad when exited from the barrel of the rifle.
These and other objects are provided by a wad which
comprises a cylindrical body having an axial cavity or seat
with a closed base and adapted to receive and withhold the
single projectile. The cylindrical body has externally
thereto a base portion with continuous surface and a plur-
ality of radial fins or wings, inclined with respect to the
generatrix and defining therebetween a plurality of grooves.
In the cavity or seat there are provided wings with crests
forcedly hold the projectile and to define grooves for the
passage of air toward the rear of the projectile, so as to
aid with detachment of the projectile from the wad.

~S~
Greater details of the invention will be evident from
the following description thereof and from the accompanying
drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the wad in partial and longitudinal
sectional view along lines I-I of Figure 2;
Figure 2 shows a transverse sectional view of the wad;
and
Figure 3 shows sectionally a typical cartridge with
single projectile made by using the wad of the present
invention.
With reference to the drawin~s, numeral 1 represents
in its entirety the body of the wad stamped in plastic and
having a maximum outer diameter equal to the inner diameter
of the shell 2 of the cartridge to be made (see Fig. 3).
The body 1 is substantially cyli.ndr.ical and llas a
seat or cavity 3 axially thereto with a closed base 4. In
the center of the base 4 there is provided a nose 5 which
serves as support for the projectile 6. On the surface of
the cavity 3 there are provided the longitudinal fins or
wings 7 which define therebetween an equal number of grooves
8. These grooves serve to direct the air toward the base
of the projectile, which base rests on nose 5. The crest
7' of the fins or wings 7 define, together, a seating of
diameter substantially e~ual to, or slightly smaller than
the diameter of the projectile 5, so that the latter might
be inserted and forcedly held between the crests 7' (see
Fig. 3).
1368 P/ll CA _4_

~L5~
The body 1 has, externally thereof, a base portion 9
with continuous surface, adapted to adhere t~ the inner
surface of the shell 2 of the cartridgeO Fr~m the base
portion 9 and toward the upper extremity of the body 1
there is a plurality c~ radial fins lO which define the
corresponding grooves 11. Grooves 11 have a helicoidal
conformation, inclined with respect to the generatrix of
the outer surface of the body.
When the projectile 6 is inserted in ~he cavity 3 of
the wad, the two elements form a substantially single body
which is used as such in making the cartridges for smooth-
bored hunting rifles.
It is, thus, evident that the wad serves as a con-
tainer for enclosing the projectile 6 and concurrently,
as a reducer or adaptor for the adaptation of the projec-
tile ~oth to the shell 2 and to ~he caliber of the barrel
of the rifle in which the cartr~dge has to be employed.
Furthermore, the wad permits a correct guide for the pro-
jectile along the barrel and, thanks to the outer fins 10,
it permits also the application of a correct rotation of
the projectile for a directional stabili~ation. On the
other hand, when the projec~ile has exited from the barrel
of the firearm, it is forced to separate from the wad and
to continue along its own trajectory free from the wad.
The separation is caused by the air stream which, pasing
along the grooves 8, defined by the internal fins 7, acts

behind the projectile so as to push it axially away :Erom the
