'Improvements relating to hinged-lid packets'
A hinged-lid packet formed from a one piece blank
and having a body formed from a base panel 1, front panel
2, rear panel 3 and side walls consisting of outer side
wall panels 4, 5 attached to the front panel 2 and inner
side wall panels 6, 7 attached to the rear panels.
The lid of the packet has a rear panel 10, top
panel 11 and à front panel 12. Inner side wall panels
13, 14 are attached to the rear panel 10 and outer side
wall panels 17, 18 are attached to the front panel 12.
The inner and outer side wall panels of both the body and
lid extend for substantially less than the front to rear
dimension of the packet but overlap and are adhered tog-
ether. The overlapping portions 6', 7', 13', 14' of the
inner side wall panels are offset inwardly to provide a
smooth exterior surface for the side walls of the jacket.

3~Z
'~E~ lati_~_to hi~ed-lid p~cket~'
Thl3 invention rela-te~ to hinged-lid p~ckets9
for example hinged-lid packets for packagin~ elongate
objects such a~ cigaxette~.
Hinged~lid packet~ for packing elongate objects
such as cigarettes h~ve long been known and commonly comp-
ri~e a deep rectili~ear body and a lid hlngedly attached
to a rear w~ll of the bodyO It is k~own for the body and
the lid to be formed ~rom a single blank and ior the lid to
hinge about a crease provided in the blank. It i9 usual
in hinged-lld cigarette packe-ts for the body and the lid
to each compri~e front and rear walls ~nd side walls each
comprising a panel extending from the f`ront wall and a panel
e~tending from th~ rear wall, each o~ which side wall panels
extends for the ~ull front-to-rear dimen~ion o~ the packet.
The blank for such hinged-lid clgarette packet~
are cut or punched from a continuou~ length o~ sheet mat-
erial and ~ometimes two or more blank~ are formed from lat-
erally adjacent portions of the ~heet material.
It i~ an object of the present inventi3n to
provide for a reduction in the re~uirement for sheet mat-
erial by permitting blanks to be derived ~rom lengths of
sheet materiQl of reduced widtho
It i3 known from, for example U.S~ Patent ~pec-
lfication No. 4,114,777 to cut blanks for hinged-lld cig-
arette packet;s from a length of sheet material where at
least two longitudi~al rows o~ blank~ are formed from the
.~

'7~3~2
sheet material, and a reduction in the required wid-th of
the sheet material is obtained by reducing the width of the
side wall panels a-ttached to the rear wall panels of the
blanks. The side wall panels attached to the front wall
panels of the blanks are maintained at the full dimension,
i.e. that of the front to rear dimension of the packets to
be erected from the blanks. The blanks in adjacent long-
itudinal rows are offset such that a reduced width side wall
panel of one blank is adjacen-t a full width side wall panel
of a second blank.
The present invention provides a hinged-lid packet
comprising a body and a lid hingedly attached to the body,
said body and said lid each comprising front and rear walls,
and side walls each comprising a panel extending from the
front wall and a panel extending from the rear wall, each
side wall panel extending for substantially less than the
front to rear dimension of said packet, the side wall panels
of each side wall overlapping. The width of the blank from
which the packet is formed is nowhere greater than the width
of the body front wall plus the widths of the side wall
panels extending therefrom, or of the width of the body
rear wall plus the side wall panel extending therefrom. The
invention also provides a blank forming such a hinged-lid
packet.
Advantageously, the overlapped portion of one
panel of each overlapping pair is offset, preferably inwardly
to receive the overlapping portion of the other panel of
the pair. Suitably, the side wall panels of an overlapping
pair are of equal width.
In order that the present invention may be clearly
understood and readily carried into effect, reference
will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying
drawings in which:-

Figure 2 shows a blank ~or a hlnged-lid packet
in acc~rdance with the present invention;
Fl~ure 3 ~how~ a blank o~ a fr~me ~or use with
a packet erected from the blank o~ ure 2;
Figure 4 shows a pex~pective view9 to ~ dif~`eren~
scale, of the packet erected from the blanks of Figures 2
and 3, the lid of the packet being shown in an open po~-
ition;
Figure 5 is a scrap view of a detail modification
of the blank o~ Figure 2, and
~igure 6 1Y a scrap vlew o~ a further detail
modification o~ the blank of Figure 2.
Referr~ng to Figure 1, the bl~nk thsre shown
include3, for forming the body o~ a hlnged-lid cigarette
packet, a rectangular baYe panel 1 at respectiv~ longer
side~ of which are attached a front wall panel 2 and a
rear wall panel 3, At respective oppo~ite ~ide3 of the
wall panel 2 are attached outer ~ide wall panels 4 and 5.
Similarly 9 at oppoYite ~ide~ of the raar panel 3 there
are attached inner side wall panels 6 and 7, to reYpective
lower ends of which are attached tabs 8 and 9.
The parts o~ the bla~k of ~igure 1 provided for
forming the ].ld of the packet comprise a rear wall panel 10,
attached at t;he upper end of the body rear wall panel 3,
a t;op wall p~mel 11 attached to the edge o~ the panel 10
further fro~ the panel 3 and a ~ront wall panel 12 which i~

~.~'73~
in turn attached to the panel 11~ To respective ~ide
edges of the rear wall ptmel 10 ~re attached inne:r side
wall p~nel~ nd 14 7 a.nd atta~hed ~t re~pective upper
edges of the panelq 13 and 14 aro tabs 15 and 16 which
are disposed at oppo~ite ends o~ panel 11. To respective
side edge~ of the front wall pan~l 12 are attached outer
~ide wall p~nels 17 and 18, and to the edge of the front
wall panel 12 further ~rom the pflnel 11 i8 attached a
front-wall reinforclng panel 19.
The lines of the cut bounding two side~ of each
of tabs 8, 9, 15 and 16 are m~-lde by slitting the blank
without the removal of material there~rom, but for illu~t~
rative purpose~ these lines are shown in Figure 1 in the
form of ~lotsO
Reference will now be made to Figure 2 in which
like part~ have been given like refe.rence numerals. ~he
major dif~`erence between the blank of Figure 2, and that
of Figuxe 1, i3 con~tituted by a reduction in the overall
width of the blankO The dimen~ion BC of the blank of
~ ~igure 2 i8 the ~ame as the corre3ponding dimension of
the blank of ~igure 10 However, the dimensio~s AB and
CD are each a third less than the corresponding dimension~
of the blank of Figure 1. A further modification compri~es
the offsettlng of outer portions 6', 7' o~ the inner wall
panel~ 6, 7, and of outer portions 13', 14', of the lid
inner side wall panels 13, 14. The off~etting of the
portione 6', 7', 13' and 14', which is indicated by chain
dotted line~, is to the extent of approximately the thick-
~,~

~3~
nesCl of the material of lhe blank~
As is shown in Figurc 2, the tab~ 8, 9 are
att~ched to end edge~ of the bottom panel 1, rathe:r than,
as is the ca~e with the blank of Figure 1, to lower edges
of the side wall panels 6 9 7. Similarly, the lid tab~
15, 16 are ~ttached to end edge~ of the top panel 11 7
rather than to upper edge~ of the lid side wall panel~
13, 14.
As in -the embodiment o~ Figure 1 the lines o~
cut bounding tabs 8, 9, 15 and 16 and pa~el.~ 13 and 14
have been shown for illust, rative purpose~ a~ slots.
Figure 3 shows a blank ~or forming a frame 20
for use with the blank of` Figure 2 in providlng -the
erected packet o~ Figllre 4. The f`rame comprise~ a fron~
panel 20 havi~g a deep recess 21 at its upper end and a
corresponding lower protruding part 21'. The frame fur-
ther comprises, to e~ch side of the panel 20, side wall
panels 22, ~3 each of which includes a central o~set
portion 22', 23' respectively, the purpose of which o~fset
portions will become apparent ~rom the description below.
In one form of the frame1 cut outs may be prov-
ided at the upper ends of the offset portions 22' and 23'
of the frame 20. In Figure 3 the off`set portion 22' is
shown as having a cut out 22" but it will be under~tood
that this one eut 22" is by way of example and that, when
provided, cut out,~ will be formed in both o.~set portion~
22' and 23'. The cut outs, in the erected pack ser~e to
receive the offset~ 13', 14' c~d accommodate the parts of

:~:1'7;~
the t1b9 15 and 16 which overlap the fr~me when the lid i~
c]o~ed, and which might interfere with the offset po.rtion~
22', 23' o~ the fr~me. The Cllt outs 22", 23" re~ult~ in
the formltion O.r tongue like pro~ections on the upper edge
of` the frLlme which engage between the tab~ 15, 16 and the
as~ociated ~idewalls 13/17 &~d 14/18 Ie~pe~ctively. Alter-
natively the cut out~ could be provided in the tab~ 15, 16
which would then each h~ve two tongue~. When the lid i9
clo~ed these tongue~ would lie agc~inst the inner ~ace~ of
the frame p~nels 22, 23 on either ~ide of the offset
portions 22', 23'.
In erecting the pclcket shown in F~gure 4 from
the blank o~ ~igure 2, the body front and re~r wall panels
2 and 3 are folded perpendicularly to, and to the ~ame side
of, the b~se panel 1O The outer ~ide wall panel 4 ls
f3lded so a~ to be received by the off~et portion 6' of
the inner ~ide wall panel 6, the overlapping portions of
the panels ~ and 6 being adhered to each other. Similarly,
the outer ~ide wa~l panel 5 i~ folded to be recei~ed by and
is adhered to, the offset portion 7' o~ the inner wall
panel 7~ The tabs 8 and 9 extend upwardly within the body
part o~ the packet.
With the side p~nels 22, 23 of the frRme folded
perpendicularly to the front panel 20~o~ the fr~me being
adhered to the rear ~urface of the front panel 2 of the
body p~rt of the packetO
In the erected lld th~ reinforci~ panel 19 i~
folded over and adhered i~ face-to-face relationship with
the inner face of the front wall panel 12. The top wall

~:~73~LZ
panel 11 ls folded perpendicularly to the rear wall panel
10 and the front wall p~nel i9 folded perpendicularly to
the top wall panel 11. With the inner side wall panels
13, 14 folded perpendicularly to the rear wall panel 10,
the outer side wall panel~ 17, 18 are folded down 90 a~ to
be received by, and adhered to, the of~set portion~
14' of the panel~ 137 14. The tabs 15, 16 extend down-
wardly within the lid.
As may be ob~erved from Figure 4, the central
off3et portion~ 22' 23' of the frame side wall panels 22,
23, which are offset inwardly, serve to accommodate the
inwardly off`~et portion~ 7', 6' of the body side wall panels
7, 6.
~igure 5 ~how3 a modification to the blank of`
Figure 2, the purpose of the modification being to ensure
that the t~b~ 8 and 9 lie clo~e against the inner ~urfaces
o~ the side walls oI the body part ol the packet. As
may be ~een from ~igure 5, a lower portion of the oYfset
6' of the inner ~ide wall panel 6 i~ given a tapered
profile, and the tab 8 t6 provided with a corre~pondingly
shaped cu-t-out ~O Thus in the erected packet the lower
tapered end of the offset 6' is received in the cut-out 8'
of the tab 8. A simi~ar arrangement is, of course, prov~
ided with respect to tab 9 7 and the 6ame principle may be
applied with re~pect to the lid tab~ 15, 16.
~ igure 6 shows a detail view of ~ further mod-
ification of the blank of Figure 2, in which a modified
form of lid tabs 15, 16 is provided. ~he blank of this

modiflcation -l~ otherwise unchanged althoueh $t will be
understood that the blank may also incorporate the mod-
i~ication to the tabs 8, 9 in Figure 50
In Figure 6 the tab 15 i9 in two part~ 15' and
15i' which are attached reapectively to the lnner ~ide wall
panel 13 and the outer ~ide wall panel ~70 The part 15"
is separated from the top wall panel 11 by a line of cut
along the edge of the panel 11, and from the part 15' by a
diagonal llne of cut extending from adjacent the point
~o where the corner of the top wall panel 11 adjoins the cor-
ner of the corner side wall panel 13 to a point approx
imately midway along the edge of the outer side wall panal
170 The part 15' i~ ~ep~rated fro~ the panel 17 by a
lateral line of cut extending from said dia~onal line to
the edge of the blank. The tab 16 on the opposite side
of the blank iB formed in two parts in an identical manner.
In a p~ck erect.ed from ~his modified blank the parts 15'
15'` and the corresponding two part~ of the tab 16 lie agai-
nst the inner face of th~ top wall panel 11. In a ~urther
modification (not shown) the tab 8, 9 could be modified
in a similar manner.
In the packet of Figure 4 the offsets of` the
body and lid side wall~ are provided in the side wall
panel~ which e~tend from the rear wall panel~ of the body
and lid. Obviou~ly, the off3ets could be provided in the
side wall p~lels extending ~rom the body and lid front
wall panels. Moreovery whereas the o~f~ets project into
the interior of the packet, lt could alternatively be
arranged for the off~et portion~ to be di~po~ed at the

~73~1~
exterior of the packet~ I~ it was thought to be aesth-
etically acceptable the of~ets could be di~po~ed with
altogether~
A blank similar to that of ~igure 2, but being
a som~what more direct adaptation of the blank of Figure
1, may be provided by maintain:Lng the attachment of the
tab3 8, 9 to the pa.nels 6, 7 and the attachment of the
tabs 15, 16 to the panels 13, 140
As wil]. be realised, by reducing the width of
both ~ide wall panels of a side wall p~ir to less than the
~ull front to rear dimension o.f th~ packet, there may be
obtained an overal.l reduction in the width of the strip
of the ~heet material ~rom wtlich the blanks are derived,
whethex a single or a plurality of longitudinal rows of`
blank~ are derived from the strip materialO
Although the above described hinged-lid packet
is of the type having a separate~ in~erted frame, the same
principle of side wall panel wldth reduction could be empl~
oyed in the case of a ~ne-piece hinged-lid packet, as for
example that di~closed in U.K. Patent Specification No.
1,431il73~
In British published Patent Specification No.
2031380 A there is disclosed means for maintaining the
lid of a one-~piece hinged-lid packet in its fully closed
posi-tion. This object is obtained by providing that
upstanding pori-ions of the side walls of the integral
frame are received and gripped between inner and outer
side wall panels of the lid. This grip action is obtain
able in a hinged-lid packet when constructed in accordance

73'~
with -the presen-t invention, although the upstanding
portions of the :Erame side walls would be received
between outer side wall panels oE the lid and lid
-tabs (such as tabs 15, 16 or Figure 2) attached to
the lid -top wall panel.
