DOUBLE WRAP BRAKE BAND
Abstract:
An improved double wrap brake band (43)
for an automatic transmission and the method of
making the band wherein the band is lightweight
and heat set round at the released open position
with the utilization of thinner strap material at
higher hardness ranges. The band is formed from a
preslotted and preformed strap (10) and a stamped
one-piece bracket member (21) secured to the
strap (10). The band subassembly is heat treated
and heat set, the interior surface is acid etched
and a preslotted friction lining (36) applied to
the interior treated surface, the subassembly is
sized, and the connecting ties for both the strap
and bracket member are removed to provide the
final band assembly.

CLAIMS
1. The method of making a double wrap brake
band including the steps, of stamping an elongated
flat strap with. longitudinally extending parallel
slots and transverse ties interrupting the slots,
stamping a one-piece bracket member having transverse
connecting bar, anchor and apply portions connected
by longitudinally extending ties, forming the
slotted strap and joining the bracket member to
the opposite ends of the strap to form an assembly,
heat treating the assembly, bonding a preslotted
friction lining to the interior surface of the
strap, and cutting out the ties in the bracket
member and the ties in the strap to complete the
double wrap band.
2. The method as set forth in Claim 1, in
which the bracket member is joined to the strap by
spot welding.
3. The method as set forth in Claim 1, in
which the bracket member is joined to the strap by
spot welding, and then the bracket member and
strap are brazed together.
4. The method as set forth in Claim 1,
including the step of heat setting the joined
assembly to preserve the roundness thereof in
the open position.
5. The method as set forth in Claim 4, in
which the interior surface of the heat set assembly
is acid etched to prepare for bonding of the
lining thereto.

6. The method as set forth in Claim 1, in
which the transverse connecting bar portion is
attached to all three bands defined by the longitudinal
slots, the anchor portion is attached to the
outside bands and the apply portion is attached
solely to the central band.
7. A double wrap brake band comprising three
substantially parallel curved bands joined by a
sheet metal bracket member to form a substantially
round double wrap hand, the bracket member including
a transverse connecting bar portion joined to the
ends of all three bands, an anchor portion joined
to the ends of the outside bands and having a
raised central bridging section to allow the
central band to pass thereunder, and an apply
portion joined to the end of the central band; the
outside bands extending from the connecting bar portion
in one direction and the central band extending
from the bar portion in the opposite direction of
rotation, said apply portion having a lip adapted
to receive the end of an actuating piston, and
said anchor portion having at least one ridge
extending at least partially across the anchor
portion with at least one upwardly bent locating
member.
8. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 7, in which said bracket member is formed
from a sheet metal stamping having ties connecting
the apply portion and anchor portion to the connecting
bar portion.

9. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 7, in which said connecting ties are removed
to separate the bands.
10. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 7, in which said bands are formed from a
preslotted sheet metal strap having removable
transverse ties.
11. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 7, in which said apply lip has a concave
surface facing the apply piston.
12. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 11, in which said apply lip comprises an
upwardly folded portion of the apply portion with
a central indentation therein.
13. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 11, in which said apply lip comprises an
upwardly bent ear stamped out of the apply portion,
and a pair of upwardly bent locating tabs positioned
laterally and rearwardly of the apply lip.
14. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 7, in which said anchor portion ridge comprises
an upwardly folded portion extending transversely
across said anchor portion.
15. A double wrap brake hand as set forth in
Claim 14, including a pair of upwardly bent tabs
stamped out of the anchor portion rearwardly of
said ridge.

16. A double wrap brake band as set forth in
Claim 7, in which said anchor portion ridge comprises
a pair of upwardly bent tabs stamped out of the
anchor portion and aligned with the outside bands.
17. A double wrap brake hand as set forth in
Claim 16, including an upwardly bent convex transverse
portion located rearwardly of said anchor tabs and
aligned with said central band.

The presPnt invention relates to an Lmproved
double ~rap ~rake ~and and the method of making
same or use in the automati.c transmission of an
automotive vehicle. In a conventional automatic
transmission of the torque converter type, a
driven shaft extends from the torque converter
into the transmission to a unit having one or more
cl.utch drums around ~hich are placed double wrap
~rake ~ands; and more specifically, the double
wrap hands are used for th.e 1-2 unit and for the
reverse uni.t. It is the function of the brake
~ands under suita~le hydraulic controls to effect
gear change and control of the direction of ro-
tation of the OlltpUt or drive shaft from the
transmïssion.
Presently manufactured double wrap brake
bands are formed ~rom a relatively thick metal
~0 stxap and a forging or cast.ing ~orming ears and a
transverse tie for the band; the ears being e~gaged
b~ the struts and a h.~draulic piston .in the trans-
mission to actuate the hand~ The forging or
ca~tin~ is locate.d in the space bet~een the ends
of the axcuate stra~ ancl the edge~ of the cas:ti.ng
and strap are ~utt welded together. A~ seen in
U. 5. Patent No. 2,867,8~8, once th.e bracket i5
weIded to the strap, t~e assem~ly ;s expanded to
size ancl shape, the bracket is transversely ~roached
~a

-to form -the transverse tie and ears separated by parallel
slots and to form "V" slots in the ears to accommodate
the stru-ts, openings are pierced in the bo-ttom wall of -the
broached slots, the interior surface of the assembly is
shot peened and the friction lining is bonded to the surface.
AEter bonding, openings are pierced in the fric-t:ion material,
the interior surface is bored, the friction lining is
circumferentially grooved, and two circumferential slots
are formed -through the assembly, except the transverse tie,
hy sawing through the strap and lining to produce the three
radially expansible bands.
Tlle double wrap bands made by -the above enumerated
method have certain disadvantages in operation. The :internal
st~~~sC;es created :in the bands durincJ manuEac-ture will distort
the bands so that they are not round in the released position.
Thus, when assembled in an au-tomatic transmission, there will
be a certain amount oE drag between the bands and its
associated drum. Also, when the bands are actuated to
engage the drum, a lack of concentricity oE the outer and
middle bands results in uneven engagement of the band. The
double wrap brake band of the present invention obviates
the disadvantages of the previously used bands.
Accordlng to the present invention there is
provided a double wrap brake band including three substantially
parallel curved bands joined by a sheet metal brac]cet member
to form a substantially round double wrap band, the brAcket
member including a transverse connecting bar port:ion jolned
to ~he ends oE all three bands. An anchor portion is joinecl
to -th~ ends of the outside bands and has a raisecl central
~0 brid~Je sect:ion to allow the central band to pass thereunder.
~n apply portion is joined to the end of the centr~:l band,
arlcl the outside bands extend from the connecting bar portion
in one direction and the central band extends from the bar
portion in the opposite direction of rotation. The apply
portion has a lip adapted to receive the end of an actuating
piston, and the anchor portion has at least one ridge extending
at least partially across the anchor portion with at least

one upwardly bent locating member.
Another aspect of -the invention resides in -the
method of making a double wrap brake band including the
steps oE stamping an elonyated flat strap with
longitudinally extending parallel slots and transverse
ties interrupting the slots. ~ one-piece bracket member
having transverse connec-ting bar and anchor and apply
portion connected by longitudinally extending ties is
stamped. The slotted strap is formed and -the bracket member
is joined to the opposite ends of the strap to form an
assembly. The assembly is heat treated, and the preslotted
Erlction llning is bonded to the interior surface of -the
strap. The ties in the bracket and the ties in the strap
are cut out -to complete the double wrap band.
The present invention comprehends, therefore, the
provision of an improved double wrap brake band which is
formed Erom a preformed and pres].otted stamped strap and a
separate staMped one-piece brac]~et member. The bancl and
brac]cet are Eormed Erom thinner gauge sheet meta] Eor
improved cost and lighter weight with the material having a
higher hardness range. The bracket and strap are secured
together, and the assembly is heat set round in the released
position to decrease -the drag o-f the band on the clutch
drum whell the band is released.
The present invention also comprehends the provision
o~ an .improved double wrap brake band utilizing a preslotted
non-asbestos friction lining. I,ess material is requ:ired Eor
the band, and there is better axial alignment oE the outs:ide
and middle bands :in the Eree position. ~lso, there is a better
en~a~ed conEormity oE the double wrap band wlth all three
bands in substantially uniEorm enc~agement with the clutch drum.
One specific Ee~ture of the present inven-t:ion is
tlle prOV.iSiOII o:E a unique one-piece bracket member Eor joining
the :Eree ends oE the preslotted strap together. The bracket
member comprises an anchor portion having a central bridging
sec-tion, a transverse connecting bar and an apply portion;
all joined together by longi~udinally extending generally

parallel ties~ The bridging section of the anchor p~rtion
conIIec-ts the anchor ends o:E the outer bands together to
improve the alignmen-t oE the straps and thereby improves
engaaemen-t of the band. Also, the transverse connecting bar
i.5 secured to the static ends of all three bands formed
~rom the strap.
In a speciEic embodiment of -the presen-t invention,
the preslotted strap is formed in-to a curved con:Eiguration
and a preslotted mctal bracket member is spot welded to the
strap; both the strap and bracke-t having tie portions
retaining a unitary assembly~ The assembly is heat treated,
heat set and the interior surface prepared for bonding. A
pres.Lotted Eriction lining is bonded to the interior surEace
oE the band, and the ties in the strap and bracket are removed
to provlde the final double wrap band.
Further objects are to provide a construct;on
oE maximum simplicity, eEEiciency, economy and ease oE
operation, and such further objects, advantages and
capab:ilities as will later more fully appear and are
inherently possessed thereby.

in Aetail below with reference to drawings which illustrate
onl~ one specific embodiment, in which:-

Referring more particularly to the disclosure in
the drawings wherein are shown illustrative embodiments
of the present invention, Figure 1 discloses the pre-
slotted flat strap 10 which forms the basis for the final
double wrap brake band. The strap includes two parallel
lines of elon~ated slots 11 separated by transversely
aligned ties 12 to form parallel outside bands or band
~0 se~ments 13 and 14 and a middle band or band segment 15.
One end 16 of the middle band extends beyond the ends
17,17 of the outside band~ w~ile at the opposite end,
the ends 13,18 of the outside bands project beyond the
end 19 o~ the middle band. The slotted band is ~ormecl
into a curved member 33 (:F~ures 2 and 3~.
An important aspect of the present invention
resides .in a one~piece anchor bracket member 21 (F.igu.res
~ 5 alld 6) :Eormed by stampi~n~ the bracket member from
sheet metal to provide a lonyitudinally curved member.

central transverse connecting ~ar portion 22

an anchor portion 23 extending the width of the
strap and having an upwardly folded or crimped
ridge 24 and a ra;sed central hridgin~ sec~i.on or
porti.on 25 on each side.of and extending under the
crimped, convex ridge 24; th,e anchor portion ~eing
inte,gral with the trans~erse connecting ~ar portion
22 throug~ a pair of parallel ties 26,26. The
anchor portion 23 of ~racket mem~er 21 serves the
unique purpose of connecting the anchor ends 17,17
of the outer bands 13 and 14 to improve the alignment
of the ~ands 13,14 during engagement. A pair of
upwardly ~ent positioning ta~s 27,27 are stamped
out of the anchor portion adjacent but rearwardly
of the folded ridye 24; the tahs or ears 27 functioning
as locating mem~ers~ Extending from the opposite
side o:~ the transverse connectiny bar portion 22 is a
centrally located longitudinally extending apply
port;on ~8 having an upwardly crimped or folded
lip 29 with. an indented central area 31; the apply
portion being attach.ed to the transverse bar portion
22 by a tie 32.
The anchor bracket memher 21 is a one-p.iece
stamping that is located on the ends of the 5 trap
1.0 when it is ~armed or curved into a general.ly
arcuate member 33 ~ith the central hand 15 extending
under the xaised ~ri.d~in~ secti.on 25 o~ th.e hracket
mem~er~ The bracket memher is spQt welded as at
34 to the ends i6,19 of the middle ~and and the
ends 17,17,18,18 of t~e outer ~ands ~Figures 7
and 8~. After spot welding, the ~racket and
curved strap ma~ ~e copper brazed together to
improve the reliahility over a simple welded
assem~.ly.

After spot welding and/or brazing at a
temperature in the range of 2030 to 2Q50F., the
assembly is held for ~ive minutes at th.e elevated
temperature and then heat treated hy heating to a
temperature in the range of 155Q to 17QQF. and
quench.ed in hot or cold ~lQQF. - 35Q~.I oil
to provide a Rockwell C scale hardness of 54 to 58.
Then the a~sem~ly is predra~n at a temperature of
approximately 40Q~. for a~out 35 minutes to a
la Rockwell C scale hardness of 50 to 54. Finally,
the assem~.ly is heat set to the desired diameter
over an expanding ~ixture at a temperature in the
range o~ 700 to 740 F. over a time period of 20
to 30 minutes to produce a Rockwell C scale hardness
Of 40 to 45.
A preslotted non-asbestos fxiction lining 36
(Figure 9~ is applied to the interior surface 35
of th.e band assem~ly after the surface is prepared
~y an acid etch or other suitable surface preparation.
2a The lining also is formed with elongated longitudinal
pa.rallel slots 37 separated by transverse ties 38.
The ends 39 of the bands formed by the slots are
also joined by ties 41 ra-ther than the open slots
o~ the strap 10. The lining is ~onded to the
2S sur~ace 35 by a ~ui.ta~le adhesive at a temperature
in th.e range o~ 40Q to 44Q~. at the bond line ~or
t~o mînute~ with. the ties 38 ali.gned with. the ties
12 oE the ~trap la and positi.oning notche~ 40 al.igned
~ith the ties 26 o~ the ~.racket member; th.e ends of the
3Q linin~ ~eing positi.Qned su~stantiall~ diametrically
opposite to the ~racket mem~.er 21.

Once the lining is bonded to the ~and assemhly
to form the asseI~.ly 42, t~e tie~ 26,26 joinin~
the portion 23 to the connectin~ b.ar portion 22
and the tiè 32 joinin~ the appl~ porti.on 29 to the
~ar portion are cut out (Fi~ures lQ, 11 and 12).
Then the ties 12 and 38 in the ~trap and l;ner,
re..spectively, are removed ~ punching or other
suita~le operation (~igures 13 and 141 to form the
interconnected three ~ands 44,45,46 of the final
assem~ly 43 (Fiyure 15). This assemhly has a
~etter alignment of the bands due to the inter-
conne.ction of the anchor ends 17,17 of the outer
bands 44 and 46 by the bridging section 25 in the
free or released positîon to provide greater
roundness and thus less drag ~etween the bands and
the clutch drum. Also, when the band is applied
to the drum, engagement is more uniform throughout
the three parallel bands 44,45,46. Obviously, the
ties 12 and 38 in th.e band could be initially
removed followed hy the bracket ties 26 and 32 to
ohtaln the same result.
Figure 18 disclo~es an elongated strap 51 to
form th.e rever~e douhle wrap band which is generally
similar to the ~trap 10 .in having longitlldinally
extendin~ slots 52 with tran~verse ties 53; however,
the end 55 of the central band 54 extends farth.er
~e~ond the ends 57 of th~ out~ide hands 56 at the
one end and, at the oppo~ite end, the ends 59 of
the`outer ~ands extend ~arth.er be~ond the end 58
of the central band. Like~ise`t~e hracket mem~er 61
~Figures 1~ and 201 of t~e reverse band is more

elongated with a connecting ~ar portion 62, an
anchor portion 63 connected to the har portion ~y a
pair of elongated ties 64, and an apply portion 68
connected to the ~ar portion 62 b~ a single elongated
tie ~9. The anchor portion 63 is formed with a
central circumferentiall~ ex-tendin~ raised bridging
section 65 having an upwardly bent convex portion
66, and a pair of upwardl~ bent ears 67,67 punched
out of the member aligned with the outer bands 56
o:E the elon~ated strap 51 to receive anchor struts
or pins thereagain~t.
The apply portion 68 includes a punched out
concave central upwardly extending lip 71 and a
pair of punched out side tahs 72,72 slightly
rearwardly and laterally of the lip 71 to po-
sitively locate the apply piston pin (:not shown)
against the lip 71; the tabs 72,72 preventing
lateral misalignment of the piston. The process
of forming the final double wrap band assembly for
the reverse band is substantially the same as
described and shown in Figures 1 through 17.
The present double wrap brake band and the
meth.od o~ making the same has several technical
advantages over presently manufactured dou~le wrap
band5 as ;Eollows:
1. Less material is utilized for the hand
and bracket to provlde a lighter weigh:t
unit.

2. Lower runnin~ drag loss on the drum ~ith
the band in the open position.
3. An improved ~atiyue life for the ~and
resulting ~rom utilization of a higher
hardness range.
4. Where the ~racket and strap are hrazed
together, tElere i5 improved relia~ilit~
over a welded only assembly.
5. Better al~gnment o~ the bands in open
position and better engaged conformity.
6. The assembly has a lower unit cost as
stampings are used instead of forgings
and all machining operations are eliminated.
7. There is an improved bonding of the friction
lining to the band.
8. A more uni~orm product is achieved.
~. A non-asbe~tos band lining is utiLized.
