A B S T R A C T
In the construction of a building wall comprised
of masonry units it is common to use special units to form
door and window jambs, corners and pilasters. In this
invention a single design end piece is utilised in
conjunction with a standard masonry unit to serve a number
of purposes. These include the creation of a square end
at door and window jambs, at wall corners and at pilasters.
In addition the end piece closes the end of blocks that
may include exposed insulation material. The end piece
also completes a standard block to co-ordinate the running
laying length module for blocks of various thicknesses at
corners and pilasters.

Revendications

C L A I M S
The embodiment of the invention in which an
exclusive property or privilege is claimed is defined
as follows.
1) In a concrete block wall construction, an end piece
of concrete to be used with a standard insulated
concrete block so as to produce a closed end having
a major vertical plane face, and having vertical
and horizontal minor faces that are flush with the
corresponding faces of the block with which it is
to be used, and which is so further shaped as to
match the contiguous irregular end of the insulated
block, and such shape being comprised of vertical
minor plane faces that are successively perpendicular
to the face of the standard block, parallel to it,
perpendicular to it, oblique to it and parallel to it.
2) An end piece as described in Claim (1) in which the
two minor vertical plane faces that are flush with
the two major plane faces of the standard block,
have a length equal to the gross thickness of the
standard block minus one half the running laying
module of the standard block, said determined length
thereby preserving the running laying module around
a corner and resulting in completely plane, parallel
wall faces, both inside and outside of the corner.
3) An end piece as described in Claims (1) and (2)
which may be used at either, one or both ends of
standard blocks to preserve the running laying bond
in the construction of pilasters having plane faces.
4) End pieces as described in claims (1) and (2) which
are either adhesive bonded to the standard block
or are mortar set.
5) An end piece as described in Claims (1) and (2)
which may be used in conjunction with full length
or half length standard blocks at door and window
openings and at wall ends to produce a closed, plane
butt end of the wall.

S P E C I F I C A T I O N
This invention relates to an element to be used
in the construction of a wall built of masonry units.
Specifically this element is described as an end pieceO
It is common in the construction o~ masonry walls
to use an assortment o~ special units ~o produce t~e desired
wall surface pro~iles at poi.nts of discontinuity such as
door and window openings~ corners and pilasters~ Such
speci.al units are designed to preserve the running laying
module of the standard masonry unitO In walls in which
(10) masonry units are used that contain an insulation material
it is usual that the insulation material extend to the
vertical ~aces comprising the ends of the standard unit.
This is necessary to eliminate thermal bridgingO The
manufacture of these special block units is expensive
because of` their low usage and because for blocks contai.ning
an insul~tion material the cost o~~special moulds is
considerableO In addition it is dificult to incorporate
a~ insulation material ~hat preserves the thermal barrier
in blocks of a special shape~ This invention is for an
(20) end piece that may be used immediately in conjunction with
a standard masonry unit and is so shaped that it provides
a flush square end to every course of standa.rd masonry units
at door and window jambsO In additi.on to providing a squa.re
and closed end to standard blocks at ~all corners and at
pilasters~ it is of controlled dimension so that the running
laying module of the standard block is-preserved3 for blocks
of various thicknessesO

Figures 1 and 2 show alternate courses of a wall
adjacent to a door or window opening. In Figure 19 the
end piece 1, which is the subject ol this invelltion, is
used with a standard insulated block 2. The insulation 3
in the block extends to the butt end of the blockO The
(20~ end piece 1 may either be bonded with adhesi~e to the standard
block ends 4 or may be mortar se-tO The end piece 1 has a
square and plane end face 56 Typical of the remaining
blocks of the course 6 is a standard blockO In Figure 2
the end piece 1 is similarly used with a half block 7 which
completes the running module of the standard block 6~ The
end piece 1 produces a closed and plane end 5 to all of
the courses of a door or window jamb.

Figures 3 and 4 illustrate alternate courses at a
wall corner~ In figure 3 the end piece 1 has been used in
conjunction with a standard block 2 to produce a closed and
square faced end 5 and in addition, to preserve the running
laying module of the standard block~ This is achieved by
determ; ni n~ the running laying length 8 of the end piece 1.
The face of the first typical block 6 in the return of -the
wall around the corner is laid flush with the end face 5
of the end piece 1. In Figure 4 the end piece 1 is used
(~0) with standard block 2 to form the return at the corner.
Again the running laying dimension 8 of the end piece 1 is
so determined as -to pre~erve the running laying module.
The insulation content of the wall is enclosed and preserved
at the corner without the use of a special block.
Figures 5 and 6 illustrate al-texnate courses at a
pilaster. In figure 5 end pieces 1 are used at the
contin ~ ous end of running standard blocks 2. End pieces
are also uæed at both ends of the pilaster block 9O The
running laying length 8 of the end pieces 1 used singly with
(20) the running units Z~ in conjunction with the use of end
pieces 1 at each end of the block 9, both preserves the
running laying module of the wall and produces a flush
vertical face 5 at both ends of the pilaster in every course~
In figure 6 blocks 9 have end pieces 1 at each end so as to
produce a flush face 5 on both interior and exterior faces
of the pilast~r~ Pilasters using multiple interior stretcher
blocks may be similarly created.
