ABSTRACT
A fastener made out of a strip of metal is used to establish
a temporary connection between adjacent gratings such as
metal components used to surface roadways for instance. Each
side of the fastener has flanking attachments that point
downwards, that are separated and opposite each other, and
that fit into recesses in the gratings. The flanking attach-
ments are parallel to each other in such a way that the top
of the fastener is shaped like a U. The distance between the
two flanking attachments it slightly greater than twice the
width of an edging strip on the gratings. The flanking
attachments are slightly longer than the edging strip is deep.
The ends of the flanking attachments are continuously flanged
on the inside, so that displacement of the adjacent gratings
relative to each other is prevented, and the fastener remains
tightly in place against motions of the gratings.

CLAIMS
1. Gratings connected by a fastener made out of a
strip of metal for use as a temporary connection between
adjacent gratings with edging strips such as metal components
used to surface roadways, comprising: flanking attachments
pointing downwards on each side of the fastener; said
flanking attachments being separated and opposite each other
and fitting into recesses in the gratings; said flanking
attachments being parallel to each other so that the top of
the fastener is U-shaped, spacing between two flanking
attachments being substantially greater than twice the width
of an edging strip on the gratings; said flanking attachments
having a length substantially greater than the depth of the
edging strip; and ends of the flanking attachments having a
continuous flange on the inside, so that displacement of said
adjacent gratings relative to each other is prevented, said
fastener remaining tightly in place against motions of said
gratings.
2. Gratings connected by a fastener as defined in
claim 1, wherein said flanking attachments have a bevel on
one side so that the width of their lower edge is less than
half the width of their upper area and ends of the flanking
attachments have a continuous flange on the inside so that the
length of each end is greater than half the distance between
the flanking attachments so that the bottom has the shape of
- 6 -

a closed U, so that edging strips of adjacent gratings are
substantially completely enclosed.
3. Gratings connected by a fastener as defined in
claim 1, wherein each flanking attachment has a hook-shaped
projection comprised of flanging for substantially rapid
release of said fastener when required.
4. Gratings connected by a fattener made out of a strip
of metal for use as a temporary connection between adjacent
gratings with edging strips such as metal components used to
surface roadways, comprising: flanking attachments pointing
downwards on each side of the fastener; said flanking attach-
ments being separated and opposite each other and fitting
into recesses in the gratings; said flanking attachments being
parallel to each other so that the top ox the fastener is
U-shaped, spacing between two flanking attachments being
substantially greater than twice the width of an edging strip
on the gratings; said flanking attachments having a length
substantially greater than the depth of the edging strip; and
ends of the flanking attachments having a continuous flange on
the inside, so that displacement of said adjacent gratings
relative to each other is prevented, said fastener remaining
tightly in place against motions of said gratings; said
flanking attachments having a bevel on one side so that the
width of their lower edge is less than half the width of their
upper area and ends of the flanking attachments having a
continuous flange on the inside so that the length of each end
- 7 -

is greater than half the distance between the flanking
attachments so that the bottom has the shape of a closed
U, edging strips of adjacent gratings being thereby
substantially completely enclosed; each flanking attachment
being a hook-shaped projection comprised of flanging for
substantially rapid release of said fastener when required;
said fastener being prevented from projecting above the
surface of said gratings by recesses in upper edges of said
edging strips.

lZ18833 1 i
1 STEER AND SPREADERS FOR RELOAN AND REMOVING It
2 Thy invention concerns, first, a fastener made out of a
3 strip of metal and used Jo establ~h a temporary connection
4 between adjacent grating 9 metal component use to surface
roadways for intones, each sloe of the phonier having
6 flanking attachment that point owner that are
7 separated and opposite each other, and that fit into
recesses in the grating, and, Sweeney, prudery for
9 removing the fastener.
if Surfacing made out of such gratings can alto ye employed
12 among other purposes for aircraft Tokyo and landing
13 strip. ionic they mutt accordingly be secured against
14 . undesired displacement, the bottom ox the grating have
ridges that can be vibrated into the round.
16 .
17 ha flanking attachment in a known fastener of this type
18 (German OX 2 737 179) point outward. This design has
19 disadvantages. Gaps that cannot be filled in can form
between the edge and flanking Attachments when the grating
21 is vibrated into the ground, resulting in a weak point. The
22 flanking attachments can alto get Kent out 50 far that they
23 cannot be extracted from the ruses in the writing, which
24 can therefore be ~n~rchanged only with difficulty or not at
Z5 all. Furthermore, since the flanking attachment which are
I it the form ox pro~ectiny hooks, are alto conical, their
27 contact with the gratings is only lunar and the slightest
28 displacement of the fasteners in relation to the gratings
29 will result in unsatisfactory connection.
!

lZ18833
he present invention it intended a a fattener of the
2 Ayers d type that lucks the aforesaid disadvantages and
3 not only ensures a reliable connection Boone the ratings
4 but; also facilitates interchanging them.
This objective it achieved in accordance with the invention
7 in a fattener maze out ox a trip ox metal of the Afros
typo in that the f tanking attachments parallel each other in
9 . such a way that the top ox the fastener is shaped like a I,

13 being slightly greater thin the depth of thy edifying troupe,
14 and in that the ends of the f tanking attachments are
15 control flanged on the inside.
16
17 The fattener on accordance with the invention it capable ox
I elastically accepting any vertical motions on the port of
9 in visual gratings without coming loose.
21 In one embodiment of the invention the f tanking attachments
22 are beveled on one side on such a wry that the width ox

continuously flanged on thy inside in such a way that the
26 length of each end it treater than half the distance between
I the flanking attachments in such a Jay that the bottom is
28 shaped like a cloyed IT. the edging strips ox the adjacent
I gratings are accordingly completely enclo~2dL

1 In another embodiment of the invention Shea flanking
2 attachment has a hiccupped projection ~onsi~tin~ of
3 flanging to ~acilltate releasing thy connection rapidly and 3
4 easily when necessary eye hook-shaped projections can be
gripped with an appropriate tool and extracted to open thy

8 The fattener is preferably opened with spreader with
9 mutually offset tongs on their flanks that extend over only
lo about one third of thy width of the spreader and ore always

12 outside of the fastener it loft between the tong when the
13 spreaders are Clyde Each tong has a thickening strip that
14 is somewhat narrower than the distance between the
lo hook-shaped projections on the fastener. When the spreader

17 behind the hook-shaped pro~ection8 and, when thy flank of
18 the spreader are extended, the fattener open and can be
19 removed.
