l;~ SlB
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present lnven-tion concerns a rlng for seallng
and storage of a spool o-F audio, video, data, etc. record-
ing tape, and lntended for being employed with a spool
comprising a hub and a pair of parallel circular cheeks,
the ring cornprising a bancd oF flexible and e~tensible
matter equipped on one face of it with longituclinal ribs
intended -for engaging on opposite sicles of the cheeks of
the spool, and equi.pped at one end of it with a :Loop asso-
ciated with tension means and at the other end wlth ashapecl piece exhibLting firstly a point for hool<ing-on the
said loop and secondly a hook for hanging up, the said
shapecd plece being fastened to the band by two projecting
portions which pass through the band and are hald on-to lt
by enlargemen-ts, one of the said projecting pcrtions
consisting of a split stud.
PRIOR ART
A sealing ring of this type is described in the
U.S.Patent N 3,69fi,9~. In -this ring one of the
projectlng portions of the shaped piece is re-tainecd by a
cranked portion extending in parallel wi.th the band, the
other projecting portion consisting of a split circular
stud. The retaining force on the cranked portion creates a
-torque so that the hollow in the knee forms a critical
point. As to the split stud it is helcl by two small narrow
faces in the shape o-F crescen-ts. The area o-f hold is very
small, taking into account the elasticity of the materials
employed, on -this occasion poLyethylene for the band and
another synthetic material for the shaped piece, surh as
polypropyler1e or terpulymer--acr~J:Lonitrile-~:)wtadierle
styrene, known under the name oF ABS.
SUMMARY OF T~IE INVENTION
The airn oF -the present inverltion is to improve the
hold of the shaped piece onto the band.
For this purpose the split stud and the correspond-
ing hole in the band are of square section, the enlarge-
-- 2 --

5~
ment of the stud exhlbiting two bearing swrfaces o-f rec-
tangular section, and -the other portion projecting from
-the shaped plece and -the corresponding ho:Le -form a bayonet
fixture.
The bayonet fi><ture ensures by itself a lockecl
-fastening. The forl-e is distributed over two arms and the
torques are reduced. The employment of a stud of square
sec-tion cooperating with a square hole enat:~les one to have
two bearing sur-faces of rectangular hold of area substan-
tially greater than that of the crescents on a stud ofcircular shape.
In accordance with one par-ticular embodimen-t of the
invention, the walls facing one ano-ther in the slit in the
split s-tud each exhibits a depression near the end o-f i-t
and the end of one of the por-tions of the split stud is
connected to a plug by a radial arm, the diameter of -the
said plug being greater than the width of the slit in the
stud so that the plug may be introduced by force into the
said split and into the depressions, by folding the said
radial arm. This enables the elastici-ty of the split stud
to be neutralized and -the safety of the Fastening of the
shaped piece to be -further increased.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The attached drawing represents by way of example
one embodiment of -the invention.
Fig.1 is a profile oF the shaped piece mounted on a
band shown in axial section;
Fig.2 is a cletail of the split stucl;
Fi0~3 is a plarl v:Lew of the shaped piece;
Fig.~ is a section along III-III of -the shapecl pi.ere
as in Fig.1;

the shaped piece is fastened, before -fastel1ing it.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EM80DIMENTS
The ring for sealing ancl storage partially shown ln
~ 3 --

~ ~2~i
Fig.1 consists of a band 1 one end of which is in one
piece with a loop 2 hinged onto the end of the band 1 by
rneans o-f a link 3. The loop 2 in -the fortn o-f a hood
exhibits a front edge ~, which becomes hoo~ecl over -the nose
5 of a shaped plece fastened to the other end of the band
1 and exhibiting a hook 6 intencled -for hanging up the rin0
on a support for stowiny. In the position shown in Fig.l
the ring is closecl the two ends of the bancl 1 meeting at
7.
The end of the band 1 carrying the shaped piece
exhibits a hole 8 formecl by -the intersection of a longitu-
dinal rectangular slit and a circular hole and a square
hold 9 IFig.f,). The shaped piece is fastened into these
holes B and 9 by -two projecting portions 10 and 1l.
The projecting portion 10 consists of a central
cylindrical -foot 12 of diameter slightly less than the
diameter of the cylindrical portion of the hole 8 this
foot 12 exhibiting two radial arms 13 and 1 It I Fig. It ) o-f
essentially rectangular section the total length of which
is slightly less than -the len0th o-f the slit 8. The
projection 10 and the hole 8 form together a bayonet
-fixture.
The spli-t stucl 11 is of square sec-tion. As shown in
Figs.2 and 5 it exhibits a first portion 15 of section
slightly less than that of the square hole 9 in the band 1
and a second portion 16 of maximum section substantially
grea-ter than -that oF the square hole 9 but contrac-tin0
steadily towards the encl of the stud in which the slit 17
extends up to the base of the stud. The end of one of the
portions of the split stud 11 i.s connertecl to a cylindri-
ca:L plug -IB of diarneter greater than the width of -the i:Lit
17 by a radial arro 19. The whole is of course mouldec~ i.n
one piece. The wa.Lls of the slit 17 exhib:it ln acldition
two clepressions 20 ancl 21 which rorrespond with a cylin-
drical surface of diameter slightly less than the diameter
o-f the plug 18.

~s~æ~
- In order to -fasten the shaped piece onto the band 1,
the projection 10 is introduced into the hole 8 in the
t>and by placing the shaped piece trarlsversely to the band
and then it is turned through 90 and the split stud 11 is
forced into the hc)le 9. The shaped piece is thus held
par-tly by the arms 13 and 1/, of the projec-tion 10 and
partly by the two rectangular bearing surfaces 22 ancl 23
on the split stucl 11. The cylindrical plug 1f~ is then
-forced into the slit 17, the plug 18 becornlng seated in
the cylinclrical depressions 20 and 21. The slit giving the
elasticity to the spl.it s-tucl is thus done away with and
the -fastening o-f the shaped piece by this split stud i.s
perfectly ensured.
