Abstract/
A Circular-saw Head for Sawing Off Side Boards/
A circular-saw head (5) for sawing off side boards from logs
has a circular-saw blade (6) secured to a mounting flange
(10) by countersunk locking screws (8), said mounting
flange being secured to a saw shaft (14). Between the saw
blade (6) and the mounting flange (10) there is a locking
ring (9). This locking ring (9) has on its circumference
milling cutters (18), of which the associated chip space
(19a) extends in each instance into the area between two
adjacent locking screws (8). The milling cutter (18)
protrudes laterally beyond the locking ring (8) into an
opening (20) in the circular-saw blade (6). The milling
cutters (18) mill the long edges of the side boards of the
log separated by the circular-saw blade (6).

Description

iO~
The present invention relates to a circular-saw head
for sawing off side boards from logs~
When processing logs to produce boards, planks, beams,
studs, and the like, side boards can be cut from the side material
that is produced by saw cuts off the main piece. Insofar as the
trunk is not surfaced on both sides by a shaping/milling process,
slabs will be separated in addition to side boards when these cuts
are made.
In order to avoid subsequent edging work on the side
boards lt is known that prior to cutting, the wanes that are
adjacent to the side boards can be milled to a right-angle, after
the sides of the trunk have been blocked. In a known circular-
saw head used for this purpose (DE-PS 31 21 130) the outermost
circular-saw blade is locked against a locking ring by lock screws
that protrude through holes in the locking ring and serve to secure
the blade to a mounting flange. During the sawing process, the
locking ring protrudes into the area of the previously milled-out
edge.
It is the task of the present invention to create a
circular-saw head of the type described in the introduction hereto,
in which, even in the case of irregularly shaped logs, there is no
danger that the edges of the side boards collide with the locking
ring of the circular-saw head and with which it is possible to
produce side boards with milled long edges without the need for
prior milling of 1he edges, so that no subsequent edging work is
required.

()8()8
The invention provides a circular-saw head for sawing
side boards from loys, said head having a mounting Elange that is
mounted on a saw shaft, at least one circular-saw blade with at
least one interposed locking ring being secured to the mounting
flange by locking screws, characterized in that the locking ring
has on its circumference milling cutters, the chip spaces of
which extend in each instance into the area between two adjacent
locking screws.
The milling cutters that are formed on the locking
ring mill the edges of the side boards as the latter are being
sawn of~. Even though the locking screws that are distributed
about its circumference pass through the locking ring, it is pos-
sible to configure fully functional milling cutters since the
necessary relatively large chip space is disposed in the area be-
tween two adjacent locking screws.
According to a particularly advantageous version of
the present invention it is foreseen that the milling cutters pro-
trude laterally through the locking ring and extend into a cut-out
in the circular-saw blade. This ensures that there is no gap for
chips and splinters to jam in between the milling cutters and the
adjacent circular-saw blade.
It is particularly advantageous to configure the cut-
outs, into which the milling cutters protrude, as holes in the
circular-saw blade. This simplifies production and improves
removal of the chips.
The invention is described below on the basis of

exemplary embodiments that are shown in -the drawings appended
hereto, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a simplified side view of -two circular-
saw heads arranged one above the other, for sawing side boards
off logs that are fed in as blocks;
Figure 2 is a cross-section taken on the line II-II in
Figure 1, during passage of the log;
Figure 3 is a view as in Figure 2, showing the operat-
ing process on an unblocked round log, using circular-saw heads
having two blades in each instance;
Figure 4 is an enlarged cross-section through one of
the circular-saw heads as used in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 5 is a cross-section taken on the line IV-IV
in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a cross-section as in Figure 4, through a
circular-saw head as in Figure 3.
A log 1 which, in the embodiment shown in Figures 1
and 2, has been blocked by the side flats 2, is moved by a con-
veyor 3, for example, a chain-bed conveyor system (not shown here-
in) in the di:rection indicated by the arrow 4 into a processing
plant; only two circular-saw heads 5 (that are part of this plant
and are arranged one above the other), are shown in Figures 1 and
2. It is understood that two additional circular-saw heads 5
(not shown herein) will be provided for processing the opposite
side of the log 1.
Each circular-saw head 5, the details of which are

shown in Figures 4 and 5, has a circular-saw blade 6 that has a
thickened mounting flange 7 (Figure 4) around its centre. Locking
screws 8 with countersunk heads secure the mounting Elange 7
against a ring 9 and a mounting flange 10, that is part of a sleeve
11. The sleeve 11 is coaxial with a cylindrical section 12 of a
mounting flange 13 that is installed on a saw shaft 14.
A threaded spigot 15 bears a nut 16 that tightens the
sleeve 11 against the mounting flange 13 through a washer 17.
On its circumference the ring 9 has two milling cutters
18 which a.re in each instance formed by a cutter plate that is
soldered or otherwise secured. In front of each milling cutter 18
there is a chip space l9a that extends in each instance into the
area between two ad~acent locking screws 8.
On their sides that are closest to the circular-saw
blade 6 the milling cutters 18 ex-tend axially beyond the locking
ring 9 so that in each instance they extend into an opening 20 in
the circular-saw blade 6.
When the log 1 passes, the circular-saw blades 6 cut
off a side board 21, the long edges of whic:h are simultaneously
milled by the milling cutters 18.
The embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 6 differs from
that described above in that a round log 1' that has not been
blocked by side flats is processed. In order:to separate a slab 22
that is outside the side board 21, an additional circular-saw blade
6' has been arranged spaced from the circular-saw blade 6. The
locking ring 9 with the milling cutters 18 is arranged between

these two circular-saw blades 6 and 6'. Its milling cutters 18
then protrude on the inside beyond t.he locking ring 9 and into
an opening 20' in the circular-saw blade 6'.
Between the innermost circular-saw blade 6' and the
mounting flange 10 there is an additional locking ring 9', the
milling cutters 18' of which protrude in a similar manner into the
opening 20' of the circular-saw blade 6'. For the remainder, the
locking ring 9' is made up in the same way as the locking ring 9.
Whereas, as has been described, the milling cutters 18 of the
lockiny ring 9 serve either to prevent a collision of the side-
board edges with the locking ring 9, or to produce a side board
with milled long edges, the milling cutters 18' of the locking
ring 9' serve to mill those sections of the long edges of the slab
22 that project into the area of the locking ring 9 and which
would collide with it during passage of the trunk 1'.
A circular-saw head with a plurality of circular-saws
and a pLurality of locking rings 9 or 9' can be used to cut a log
into several boards.
The version of -the locking ring 9' with milling cutters
18 that protrude further on one side makes it possible to manage
with only two types of locking rings for all four circular-saw
heads of a sawmill.
