A reading sleeve for removable covering of an arm and shoulder
of a user comprises an arm covering sleeve having first and
second opposed ends. A shoulder covering portion extends from
the first end of the arm covering sleeve for removable securement
of the reading sleeve on the arm and shoulder of a user. The
second end of the arm covering sleeve is a cuff-like opening in
the sleeve adapted to receive therethrough a hand and wrist of
the user. The shoulder covering portion comprises opposed front
and back shoulder covering flaps, the flaps defining therebetween
a shoulder receiving opening whereby the arm of the user may be
passed through the shoulder receiving opening in the shoulder
covering portion so as to extend the hand and wrist from the
second end of the arm covering sleeve. The shoulder os a user
is thereby covered by the shoulder covering portion. The arm
covering sleeve may be tubular or conical. The shoulder covering
flaps may be joined along their top edge.

READING 8LEEVE
Field of the Invention
In this invention a sleeve part of a garment, and in
particular the sleeve and shoulder of a shirt-like garment, is
designed to be used independently of the rest of the garment, for
the purpose of warmth and comfort of an arm exposed while reading
in bed.
Backqround of the Invention
This invention relates to a sleeve portion of standard
shirt-like wearing apparel, the sleeve portion covering the full
length of the arm and the front and back of the shoulder,
hereinafter referred to as a "sleeve".
It is common for people to read books, magazines, etc.
while in bed. The main purpose of this reading is for relaxation
after a busy day. It is a useful way to "unwind" and forget
one's cares. In order to completely relax, one benefits from
comfort and warmth, but does not want to be encumbered by
restrictive bed coverings or long sleeved sleeping apparel.
While reading in bed, one arm is generally exposed and cannot be
comfortably covered with a blanket without disrupting the most
advantageous placement of the reading material. As a result of
this the exposed arm gets cold.
The disadvantage of cold and its related discomfort can
be overcome by use of the sleeve of the present invention on the
one exposed arm. When one turns onto the other side, as is
prevalent while reading in bed, the sleeve can be easily
transferred to the other exposed arm.

Summary of the Invention
A reading sleeve for removable covering of an arm and
shoulder of a user comprises an arm covering sleeve having first
and second opposed ends. A shoulder covering portion extends
from the first end of the arm covering sleeve for removable
securement of the reading sleeve on the arm and shoulder of a
user. The second end of the arm covering sleeve is a cuff-like
opening in the sleeve adapted to receive therethrough a hand and
wrist of the user. The shoulder covering portion comprises
opposed front and back shoulder covering flaps, the flaps
defining therebetween a shoulder receiving opening whereby the
arm of the user may be passed through the shoulder receiving
opening in the shoulder covering portion so as to extend the hand
and wrist from the second end of the arm covering sleeve. The
shoulder os a user is thereby covered by the shoulder covering
portion. The arm covering sleeve may be tubular or conical. The
shoulder covering flaps may be joined along their top edge.
Brief Description of the Drawings
In the drawings which illustrate the embodiments of the
invention:
Figure 1 is a front elevation view of the sleeve of the
present invention.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The sleeve of the present invention has a flare at the
shoulder so that both the front and back of the shoulder is
covered. The flare starts at an opening at the underarm of the
sleeve.
The sleeve may be made of a soft, pliable, warm
material so that it provides comfort to the wearer without

restricting movement or exerting any uncomfortable pressure
points.
If desired a user may wear two sleeves, one on each
arm, so that the reader may recline on his back, holding the
reading material with both hands, thereby benefitting from the
warmth of the sleeve arm coverings while having both arms outside
the bed covers. The sleeve is also useful while travelling by
car, train, bus or plane where a traveller often experiences a
draft when seated by a window.
As illustrated in Figure 1, sleeve 10 may be fitted
onto an arm and shoulder of a human torso 11 (illustrated in
partial broken outline). Sleeve 10 has substantially tubular arm
covering portion 12 extending between shoulder covering portion
14 and cuff 16 at which arm covering portion 12 is gathered.
Longitudinal opening 18 extends along the lowermost edge of
shoulder covering portion 14 so as to allow sleeve 10 and in
particular shoulder covering portion 14 to be placed over a
shoulder of the user. When in use, front flap 14a of shoulder
covering portion 14 covers the front of the user's shoulder and
chest, and back flap 14b of shoulder covering portion 14 covers
the shoulder and shoulder blade.
It has been found that, advantageously, the sleeve may
have different dimensions to accommodate women and men users.
For example, lateral opening 20 on shoulder covering portion 14
through which an arm and shoulder of the user is inserted into
sleeve 10, may, for women, measure approximately 14 inches along
the lateral edge of front flap 14a and 14 inches along the
lateral edge of back flap 14b. A corresponding dimension for a
male user would be approximately 18 inches. Similarly, longi-
tudinal fold 22 might conveniently be approximately 26 inches in
length for women and approximately 30 inches in length for men.
The lateral dimension of the edge of arm covering portion 12
prior to being gathered at cuff 16 might conveniently be
approximately 6 inches for women and 8 inches for men. Longi-

,~ 2035046
tudinal seam 24, extending between longitudinal opening 18 and
cuff 16, might conveniently be approximately 15 inches for women
and 19 inches for men.
As will be apparent to those skilled in the art in the
light of the foregoing disclosure, many alterations and modifica-
tions are possible in the practice of this invention without
departing from the spirit or scope thereof. Accordingly, the
scope of the invention is to be construed in accordance with the
substance defined by the following claims.
