LIQUID HAIR COSMETIC PAINTING INSTR~MENT
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a painting instrument
fitted with a comb member, for painting liquid hair cosmetics
such as hair dye.
Prior Art
Heretofore, such liquid hair cosmetic painting
instruments have been known that each has a front shaft 2 from
which a painting member such as a brush 3 and the like projects
and on which a comb member 8 is fixedly mounted, with teeth
portion thereof arranged along the painting member. In these
instruments as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, a mounting portion 8b
of the comb member 8 on a front end region 2a of the front
shaft 2 is substantiallly cylindrical and is fixedly mounted
around the outer periphery of the front end region 2a of the
front shaft 2.
The above prior art liquid hair cosmetic painting
instruments have irlvolved such problem that is hard to handle
and unhandy to carry since outer diameter of the mounting
portion 8b of the comb member 8 is large. However, if outer
diameter of the front end region 2a of the front shafat 2 is
decreased so as to decrease that of the mounting portion 8a,
widths of the brush 3 and the like are narrowed and accordingly
width of the teeth portion 8a is also narrowed, this results iII
such a bad effect that makes the painting work troublesome.
Accordingly, the present invention is aimed at
providing such a liquid hair cosmetic painting instrument that

is easy to handle and handy to carry with the outer diameter of
the mounting portion of the comb member being narrowed, but
without the widths of the painting member, such as the brush,
and the teeth portion of the comb member arranged therealong
being narrowed.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
For the purpose of achieving the above object, the
liquid hair cosmetic painting instrument according to the
present invention comprises such improvement, in a liquid hair
cosmetic painting instrument of the type having the front shaft
from which the painting member such as the brush and the like
projects and on which the comb member is fixedly mounted with
the teeth portion thereof arranged along the painting member,
that has a front end region substantially rectangular in
section of the front shaft on which the comb member is mounted
and which has retaining members such as hook-like ribs provided
at one side portion on a long side of the rectangle, and a
rnounting portion of the comb member which abuts against the
side portion of th,e front shaft provided with above rectalning
members and which has engaging members such as engaging pieces
and the like each engaged with the retaining member such as the
hook-like rib and the like of the front shaft.

DESCRI Pl`ION OF TH~; PREFE~RED EMBODIMENT
R~ferring now to Figs. 1-8, an example o~ the present
invent~on wlll be explained below.

that it c~n b~ ~reely ~hlfted ln the axial di~eetion, with a
valve 10 being provided in the opening ~ the front of said

inner shaft 9. Said valve 10 comprises a stem 11, a valve seat
12, a valve spring 13, and a spring bearing 14. Onto the outer
peripheral portion of the front end of said inner shaft 9 is
screwed a cap 17 which has packing lS fixed therein. The rear
end of the above described li.quid delivery tube 7 is inserted
through the central. hole of said cap 16 in a state coming in
watertight contact with the packing 15, whereby said rear end
of the liquid delivery tube 7 abuts against the front end of
the valve stem ll. On the outer peripheral portion at the rear
end of said inner shaft 9 is slipped the knock shaft 17, and it
is designed in such a way that if the knock shaft 17 is engaged
with a groove 18 provided in the axial direction of said inner
shaft 9 when the knock shaft 17 is given a rotating operation,
said inner shaft 9 also can rotate integrally with the knock
shaft. Further, in the opening at the rear end of said outer
shaft 1 is fitted by pressing a breechblock 19 which prevents
said inner shaft 9 from slipping rearward. The head portion 20
at a position somewhat behind the cap 16 in said inner shaft 9
has a flat surface on both sides, thus the cross-section along
the direction perpendicular to the axial line being almost of
the shape of a "koban" (a Jaspanese gold coin used in former
times). On the inner surface of the outer shaft 1 is
protrusively formed a controling wall 22 having a through hole
21 whose cross-section is almost simlar to, but slightly larger
than, that of the above described head portion 20 of the inner
shaft 9 in shape, and together with this there is also formed a
stopper 24 having ribs 23 which have been protrusively formed
similarly on the inner surface in the direction of from one end

6 ~ 3 r~ J~
of the edge of said controling wall 22 to the back, said
stopper 24 being fixed on the inner surface of the outer shaft
1 so that said controling wall 22 can be situated in front of
the head portion 20 of the inner shaft 9 which is in an
unknocked sate.
When the inner shaft 9 is rotated integrally with the
knock shaft 17 by giving a rotating operation to said knock
shaft 17 so that the contour of the head portion 20 of the
inner shaft 9 can enter the contour of the through hole 21 of
the controling wall 22, if the knock shaft 17 is pressed
forward, the head portion 20 passes through the through hole 21
allowing the inner shaft 9 to advance, but as the valve stem 11
abutting against the liquid delivery tube 7 cannot advance, it
results that the valve stem 11 retreats relative to the valve
seat 12, and thus the valve 10 is opened rendering it possible
that the liquid hair cosmetic discharged from the inner shaft 9
is supplied to the brush 3 by passing through the liquid
delivery tube 7 and liquid impregnated body 5. Furthermore, in
the case where the inner shaft 9 has been rotated, it is
contemplated that the pos.itioning may be made so that the
contour of the head portion 20 can just fit in the contour of
the through hole 21 in such a state that the stepped portions
(not shown in the figure) provided at the end positions of the
flat portions of the side faces of the head portion 20 are
engaged ~7ith the above described ribs 23 of the stopper 24. It
is also contemplated that when the knock pressure is released
so as to retreat the inner shaft 9 by the restoring force of
the valve spring 13 and the inner shaft 9 is rotated in the

reverse direction in such a state that the head portion 20 is
positioned in the rear of the through hole 21, the contour of
the head portion 20 overruns the contour of the through hole
21, so that even though the inner shaft 9 rnay advance by the
force of inertia due to its own weight, it cannot advance,
being hampered by the controlling wall 22. Accordingly, if
such a state is assured when not in use, the unwilling
discharge of the liquid hair cosmetic due to the advancement of
the inner shaft 9 can be prevented.
Now, referring to the front end region 2a of the above
described front shaft 2, the shape of its cross-section is
almost rectangular as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, and at both ends
on the side portion 2b including one of the long sides of the
rectangle are protrusively provided hook-like ribs 2c. On the
other hand, the comb member 8 which is mounted to the front end
region 2a of the front shaft 2 comprises the teeth portion 8a
consisting of a plurality of teeth arranged in one plane and
the mounting portion 8b forming an integral part oE said teeth
portion 8a as shown in Figs. 2 through 7, and further, said
mounting portion 8b comprises the basal part 8c in the form of
a curved plate and the side face plate portions 8d on both
sides thereof. While at the front end of said side face plate
portion 8d are provided engaging pieces 8e capable of
engagement with the hook-like ribs 2c provided at the front end
region 2a of the above described front shaft, on the outer
surface of the basal part 8c are provided ribs lying in the
direction substantially perpendicular to the axial direction.
The comb member 8 is mounted to the front shaft 2 in a freely

attachable and detachable manner in such a state that the
mounting portion 8b thereof is parallel to the sid portion 2b
of the front end region 2a of the front shaft 2.
Furthermore, the present invention is devised so as to
put on the outer peripheral portion of the front shaft 2 a cap
(not shown in the figure) covering the brush 3 and the comb
body 8, and in Fig. 1, 25 and 26 indicate a seal ring and an
ornamental ring, respectively.
In the present invention, as described above, there
are provided the front end region 2a substantially rectangular
in section of the front shaft 2 on which the comb member 8 is
mounted and which has the retaining members such the hook-like
ribs 2c provided at one side portion 2b on the long side of the
rectangle, and the mounting portion 8b of the comb member 8
which abuts against the side portion 2b of the front shaft 2
provided with the above retaining members and which has the
engaging members such as the engaging pieces 8e and the like
each engaged with the retaining members such as the hook-like
ribs 2c and the like of the front shaft 2.
Accordingly, as shown in Fig. 8, a diameter D1 of a
circumcircle in a state where the mounting portion 8b of the
comb member 8 is mounted on the front end region 2a of the
front shaft 2 can be held down to a value substantially near
that of another circumcircle in a state where the comb member 8
is not mounted on the front end reglon 2a of the front shaft 2.
On the contrary, as shown in Fig. 10 with the prior art, where
the mounting portion 8b of the comb mernber 8 is substantially
cylindrical, an outer diameter D2 on the mounting portion 8b of

~ ~,2) d
the comb member 8 is surely larger than a diameter of a
circumcircle where the comb member 8 is hOt mounted on the
front end region 2a of the front shaft 2. Thus, the liquid
hair cosmetic painting instrument according to the present
invention is improved in easiness to use and handiness to
carry, with the outer diameter of the mounting portion of the
comb member being decreased in comparison with that of the
prior art ones. Further, since there is no need to naxrow the
width of the front end region of the front shaft on which the
comb member is mounted as in the prior art ones, without the
widths of the painting member such as the brush and the like
and of the comb teeth portion being narrowed, there can be
obviated such drawback that makes the painting work difficult.
