A cake pan is formed from a flat wooden base and
upstanding sides formed into a rectangular receptacle for
receiving a paper liner folded from a single sheet of wax
paper. The sides are formed from four panels of wood coupled
together at right angle corners with the base slightly larger
than the interior dimension of the frame so that the base can
receive the whole of the frame. The use of wood for the sides
and base surprisingly provides an improved baking process which
allows more even cooking and a better consistency in the
product.

20~3230
WOODEN CAKE PAN
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a pan for use in baking
comestibles from a mixed batter material of the type which
includes a base and upstanding side walls so as to define a
receptacle into which the batter material can be poured or
placed for baking during which the material generally rises.
Such cake pans formed from metal or ceramic are
well known and been available for many years.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
However it is one object of the present invention
to provide an improved pan of this general type which
surprisingly provides an improved baked product.
According to the invention, therefore, there is
provided a pan for use in baking comestibles from a mixed
batter material comprising a flat base, upstanding side walls
arranged to stand up from the base to define a receptacle for
receiving the batter material, and a paper liner shaped to
cover an upper surface of the base and an inner surface of the
side walls, the base and side walls being formed from wood.
Preferably the pan is formed with the flat base
as a separate piece together with the side walls which are
connected together to form a separate sleeve arrangement which
can be placed upon the base. Preferably the base is larger

than the interior dimensions of the side walls so that the side
walls can sit on the base and can be lifted away from the base
to release the baked product when finished.
Preferably the side walls are provided as four
side walls connected together at right angle corners to define
a rectangular shape of the pan which cooperates with a
similarly shaped rectangular base. Alternatively the side wall
can be formed into a cylindrical sleeve for circular cakes.
Preferably there is provided a liner formed of
folded paper material preferably of the wax paper type which is
shaped to lie against the base and the side walls.
With the foregoing in view, and other advantages
as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which
this invention relates as this specification proceeds, the
invention is herein described by reference to the accompanying
drawings forming a part hereof, which includes a description of
the best mode known to the applicant and of the preferred
typical embodiment of the principles of the present invention,
in which:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The pan according to the present invention
comprises a flat wooden base 10 formed from a plywood material
and cut into a rectangular or preferably s~uare shape so as to
form simply a thin flat wooden base of a thickness which is
sufficient to be self supporting. A side wall section
generally indicated at 11 includes four side walls formed from
a thin wooden material which are connected together at right
angle corners by simple butt joints together with a suitable
fastening which is preferably nails applied through the face of
one panel forming one side wall into an end face of the butting
side walls at right angles thereto. The height of the side
walls is sufficient to receive generally the height of a cake
or similar baked product and shall be of the order of three
inches in height. The dimensions of the base can of course
vary but in one example will be of the order of nine inches
square.
The base is slightly larger than the interior
dimensions of the side walls so that the side walls can sit on
the base but are entirely separate from the base and can be

2 0 ~ 3 -0
removed simply by lifting away from the base.
Within the frame defined by the side walls 11 and
the base 10 is provided a paper liner 12 formed by folding from
a larger square shape to define a flat base portion 13 and
upstanding side ~alls 14 shaped to follow substantially exactly
the shape and size of the base and upstanding side walls 10 and
11. The paper liner is folded or cut so that the uppermost
edge is defined by the outer edge of the original paper blank
and there are fold lines 15 and 16 at opposed ends of the
rectangular shape so formed.
In operation the pan is assembled by mounting the
frame on the base and then by lifting the liner into the
erected position from an initial flat folded position and then
inserting the liner into the receptacle defined by the base and
frame. With the liner so in place, the batter material is
introduced into the liner and spread to the side edges
preferably with a slightly raised edge around the periphery.
Baking regularly takes place at a temperature at
the order of 350 F (180 C). Surprisingly the manufacture of
the pan from wood does not cause damage to the pan itself
during the baking process. In view of the insulating properties
of the wood, scorching of the batter material at the side
edges and the base is prevented.

20~3230
In addition the paper liner prevents any
contamination of the wood on the cake or vice versa so the pan
remains always clean without the necessity for any scrubbing or
washing. The wood can also ripen or improve with age.
Since various modifications can be made in my
invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely
different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope
of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it
is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying
specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not
in a limiting sense.
