Description
Filter-paper insert for a filter holder
The present invention concerns a filter-paper insert for a filter holder for
producing
brewed drinks such as coffee or tea.
Filter-paper inserts of the generic type are known in all sorts of
implementation forms.
The shape of such filter-paper inserts is essentially dependent on the purpose
of usage
at the time, i.e., a filter-paper insert in each case fits the form of the
filter holder being
used at the time.
The best known filter-paper inserts are formed like bags and exhibit
approximately a
truncated conical outline. Here two layers of filter paper lying one on top of
the other
are connected with each another via a common folded edge and are bonded to
each
other, preferably by means of pressed seams, in the region of a bottom edge
and one
of the other side edges lying opposite the folded edge.
Filter-paper inserts without seam locations are known, for example, sheet-
shaped filter-
paper inserts for correspondingly shaped filter holders, e.g., for so-called
round filters.
Furthermore, filter-paper inserts in multiply folded forms are known in which
a holder-
like form can be made by appropriate folding from a single-layer blank, the
form corre-
sponding to the filter holder that is being used at the time.

CA 02267460 1999-03-29
2
Up to now filter-paper inserts of the generic type have exclusively the task
of holding
ground coffee or tea, from which, through brewing with hot water, a
corresponding
brewed drink is then produced in the filtering process.
The fundamental task for the present invention is to create a filter-paper
insert of the
generic type, by aid of which insert a brewed drink, for example, coffee or
tea, can be
additionally flavored in a simple way.
The task is solved thus according to the invention, in that the filter-paper
insert is pro-
vided with at least one hollow chamber closed on all sides and filled with a
flavor car-
ner.
With such a filter-paper insert a flavored brewed drink, for example, coffee
or tea, can
be produced in the simplest way.
Corresponding to the particular taste, a filter-paper insert according to the
invention can
be imparted with the most varied flavors. Many coffee drinkers love, for
example, to
add amaretto, egg liquor, rum, cognac or the like to the coffee, in order to
achieve a
certain taste effect. Appropriate flavoring materials can be added to such a
filter paper
according to the invention without anything else being required, so that the
appropriate
flavor is already imparted after the production of the brewed drink itself.
In many cases, the advantage is here achieved that the drink is completely
alcohol free,
as opposed to such brewed drinks into which true alcoholic drinks are mixed.
According to a further development of the invention it is planned that the
hollow cham-
ber is filled with a flavor carrier in the form of a dry water-soluble powder.
Another possibility consists in using a flavor carrier in the form of a dry
power pressed
into tablet form.
Likewise it is conceivable to use a liquid flavor carrier that itself is
placed in a water-
soluble bag and together with the bag is placed in a hollow chamber of a
filter-paper

insert according to the invention. In this case one must obviously take care
that the en-
velope of the flavor carrier consists of a food-safe material.
Further features of the invention are the object of other dependent claims.
Represented in the attached drawings are implementation examples, which are de-
scribed in more detail in the following.
They show:
Fig. 1 . a view of a flat-lying filter-paper insert according to the present
invention
Fig. 2. a partial section along line II-II in Fig. 1
Fig. 3. views of flat-lying filter-paper inserts according to other
implementation
examples of the invention
In Fig. 1 is shown a filter-paper insert 1 for a filter holder for production
of brewed
drinks such as coffee or tea, which filter-paper insert in a flat-lying
condition displays
approximately a truncated conical basic surface and in known ways displays a
folded
edge 2, a bottom seam 3 and a side seam 4.
The upper edge 5 of the filter-paper insert 1 opposite the bottom seam 3 is
the filler
opening that makes possible the filling of ground coffee or tea into the
filter-paper insert
1 after insertion of the filter-paper insert 1 into a correspondingly
truncated conical filter
holder.
An additional filter-paper layer 6 is placed on the visible surface of the
filter-paper insert
1 according to Fig. 1 . This additional filter-paper layer 6 is bonded by
means of pressed
seams with the filter-paper insert 1, both in the region of the bottom seam 3
as well as
in the region of the side seam 4, and also in the region of the side edge 2,
whereby

CA 02267460 1999-03-29
4
these pressed seams are produced in one pass along with the production of the
already
necessary bottom seam 3 and the likewise necessary side seam 4.
Additional pressed seams 7 are made at a certain distance from the floor seam
3 and
the side seam 4, whereby these pressed seams 7 merely bond the additional
paper layer
6 with the directly opposite side wall 8 of the filter-paper insert 1 . This
is very clear
from Fig. 2.
Through these additional pressed seams 7 a canal-like hollow chamber 9 is
defined,
which chamber in the region of the upper edge 5 is closed off by means of an
additional
pressed seam 10. Into this hollow chamber 9 a flavor carrier 1 1 is filled and
that pref-
erably in the form of a dry water-soluble powder. During the production of the
brewed
drink this flavor carrier 1 1 is most extensively dissolved by the hot water
and it gives its
flavor to the produced brewed drink, e.g., coffee or tea. Thus, in all, a
coffee or a tea
with an additional flavor effect is achieved.
With the implementation examples according to Fig. 1 and 2 the canal-like
hollow
chamber 9 for taking up the flavor carrier 1 1 is formed through an additional
filter-paper
layer 6 and through appropriate additional pressed seams 7 and 10.
With the implementation example according to Figs. 3 and 4 an appropriate
hollow
chamber 9 is created by the direct joining of opposite filter-paper layers of
the filter-
paper insert 1 through additional pressed seams 7 and 10. In the
implementation form
according to Fig. 3 these additional seams 7, for example, run parallel to the
lateral fold
edges 2 and the hollow chamber 9 formed in this way is closed off by another
planned
pressed seam 10 in the region of the upper edge 5 of the filter-paper insert 1
. Here also
the hollow chamber 9 accepts a flavor carrier.
With the implementation example according to Fig. 4 the additional pressed
seam 7 runs
approximately parallel to the bottom seam 3, so that in this case a hollow
chamber 9 is
created in the bottom region of the filter-paper insert 1 for taking up a
flavor carrier.

CA 02267460 1999-03-29
Fig. 5 shows the possibility of creating a hollow chamber 9 for accepting a
flavor carrier
that places, for example, a rectangularly bounded additional filter-paper
layer 6a onto a
partial region of the filter-paper insert 1 and by means of pressed seams 7 is
bonded to
the directly opposite side wall of the filter-paper insert 1 .
The represented implementation examples are only supposed to make clear in a
repre-
sentative way that multiple possibilities exist for providing a filter-paper
insert 1 with a
hollow chamber 9 for taking up a flavor carrier.
At this point it should also be expressly pointed out that even with single-
layer filter-
paper inserts, e.g., so-called round filters, additional hollow chambers can
be created for
taking up flavor carriers by placing on an additional filter-paper layer that
is bonded to
the actual round filter sheet by means of pressed seams or other bonding
techniques.
Whether a powder-form, tablet-form or liquid flavor carrier is placed into the
hollow
chamber 9 prepared at the time is of secondary importance for the intended
flavor re-
sults. It can certainly be advantageous, depending on the properties of the
flavor carrier
used, to decide on one or the other of the given possibilities.
If need be, a filter-paper insert can be provided with several hollow chambers
9 for tak-
ing up flavor carriers.
