In a guide roller for web material with two outer tube sections
(2, 2a) and optionally with at least one tube section 1 that is
arranged between these, the tube sections (1; 2; 2a) are

supported through ball bearings (5; 7) on a central shaft 3. The
outer tube sections (2; 2a) are radially adjustable relative to
the shaft 3 at their outer ends. The ball bearings (7) that

support the outer tube sections (2; 2a) are arranged on a sleeve
(20) that surrounds the shaft (3) and is spaced apart therefrom,
this being supported on the shaft (3) at its end that faces the
centre of the guide roller, and is radially adjustable by a

threaded spindle (4, 4') that fits in an outer threaded area
(13a; 13a') that faces radially towards the middle of the shaft.
At the front end, the threaded spindle (4; 4') rests on a
peripheral surface of the shaft (3) or sleeve (20) or on a
supporting surface (11) that is arranged concentrically to this.
The outer threaded area (13a) is arranged within a carrier (13)
that is supported on the sleeve (20) or on the shaft (3). The
carrier (13) is twistable about the shaft (3) and can be locked
in different twisted positions.

Guide Roller for Web Material
TECHNICAL DOMAIN

The present invention relates to a guide roller
for web material.

PRIOR ART

In a known guide roller of this type

(DE 196 22 238 Cl), the outer tube section is adjusted by a
threaded spindle that is screwed into a threaded section
that passes transversely through the shaft of the guide

roller. A sleeve is secured to the projecting ends of the
threaded spindle, and this is supported on the shaft by its
end that faces the centre of the guide roller. Rotating the
threaded spindle causes the sleeve to twist, and thereby
twists the outer tube sections that are supported on the
sleeve. The sleeve can only be twisted in the direction of
the threaded shaft, which is to say, radially.

THE INVENTION

It is the objective of the present invention to
render the inclination of the outermost tube sections
adjustable with respect to direction, which is to say in a
tangential direction.

According to an aspect of the invention, there is
provided a guide roller for web material with two outer tube
sections, the outer tube sections being supported through
first ball bearings on a central shaft, and the outer ends
of the outer tube sections being radially adjustable
relative to the shaft, each of the outer tube sections
having a sleeve, the first ball bearings being arranged on
the sleeve, the sleeve surrounding the shaft and being

spaced apart from the shaft, the sleeve being supported on
the shaft at a sleeve end that faces the centre of the guide
roller, and which is radially adjustable by a threaded
spindle that fits in an outer threaded area and faces
radially towards the middle of the shaft, wherein the front
end the of the threaded spindle rests on a peripheral
surface of the shaft, or sleeve or on a spindle supporting
surface that is arranged concentrically to the shaft; and
wherein the outer threaded area is arranged within a carrier

that is supported on the sleeve or on the shaft, and wherein
the carrier is twistable about the shaft and fixable in
different twisted positions.

The directional adjustability of the inclination of the
outer tube sections renders adjustment of the guidance of the web
material particularly precise.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

Two preferred embodiments of the present invention are
described in detail below on the basis of drawings appended
hereto. These drawings show the following:

Figure 1: A first embodiment of a guide roller in partial
longitudinal cross section;

Figure 2: A partial representation of a second embodiment, in
partial longitudinal cross section.

BEST WAY TO IMPLEMENT THE INVENTION

In the drawings, identical parts bear identical
reference numbers. Should it be necessary, these are
distinguished from each other by apostrophes appended to the
numbers.

An inner tube section 1 is supported on a shaft 3 by a
ball bearing 5 that is accommodated by a bearing bushing 9. The
outer tube sections 2, 2a are secured to the inner tube section 1
through couplings 12 so as to be rotate in unison and are

supported on a sleeve 20 through ball bearing 7. The ball
bearing 7 is secured on the sleeve 20 with a bearing sleeve 21.
The inner end of the sleeve 20 rests on the shaft 3

through an 0-ring 15. In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, a

sleeve-shaped pressure ring 17 is releasably secured on an area
3b of the shaft 3, said area 3b being of reduced diameter, the
pressure ring 17 being screwed to an element through which the
threaded spindle 4 passes and which is in the form of a

supporting ring 10. The outer peripheral surface of the pressure
ring 10 acts as a supporting surface 11 for the threaded spindles
4, 8. A clamping ring 6 provides security in the axial

direction.

An area 4b of the threaded spindle 4, which is of

lo greater diameter, lies in a recess that is formed as a retaining
area on the inner side of the supporting ring 10. The threaded
area 4a of the threaded spindle 4 is screwed into the outer
threaded area 13a of a carrier 13 that is configured as a ring
that is arranged so as to be fixed on the sleeve 20. The

threaded spindle 8 is arranged in the carrier 13 so as to be
aligned with the threaded spindle 4 on the side that is opposite
on the shaft 3.

Adjustment of the threaded spindle 4 shifts the sleeve
and thereby the outer tube section 2 radially relative to the
20 shaft 3. The direction of inclination of the sleeve 20 that has
been set is secured with the threaded spindle 8. Once the

threaded spindle 8 has been loosened, the direction of
inclination is determined by the rotation of the supporting ring
10 by the carrier 13, which takes place jointly with the threaded
spindle 4 and the sleeve 20.

In the second embodiment as shown in Figure 2, the

threaded spindle 4' is supported in the outer threaded area 13a',
in a carrier 13 that is in the form of a bell housing, A guide
pin 14 passes through the carrier 13' on the side that is
opposite the threaded spindle 4'. The threaded spindle 4' lies

on the supporting surface 11' of the sleeve 20.

At its end that faces the shaft and has a threaded
extension, the guide pin 14 is screwed into a retaining ring 18
that encloses the sleeve 20. On its inner side, the retaining
ring 18 has a recess that forms a retaining are for the area 4b

that is of increased diameter. The carrier 131 is releasably
secured to the that shaft 3 by the lock screw 16. It is
additionally fixed in the axial direction by a clamping ring 6'.
The direction of inclination of the sleeve is fixed by rotating

the carrier 13' once the lock screw 16 has been loosened.
