Abrégé anglais

This invention is a new machine and process for generating electricity from
the
naturally occurring wind. Unlike other wind machines that face into the wind,
this
machine operates vertically, with the blades turning vertically to the earth's
surface.
(See Drawings: - Figures One, Two, Three, and Four)
This machine does not have to turn to face the incoming winds to make it turn.
Instead, the vertical blades are surrounded 360° by vertical fins.
These directional fins
are adjustable and are shaped to create a venturi effect as the wind passes by
them on
the way to the inner turbine blades. The venturi effect speeds up the natural
wind to
give it more power when it hits the blades. Since these fins direct the angle
of the wind,
the natural wind can blow from any direction and the turbine blades will
always operate
at their maximum speed, based upon the venturi effect and the natural wind
speed.
The wind turbine turns a generator which creates electricity.
Since the outside fins are adjustable, they will automatically reduce the
opening
for the oncoming wind, if it should get too strong. This design will still
allow the turbine
to continue to operate in strong winds.

Revendications

Note : Les revendications sont présentées dans la langue officielle dans laquelle elles ont été soumises.

The embodiments of this invention in which an exclusive property or privilege
is
claimed are defined as follows:
1. The Vertical Enclosed All-Directional Wind Turbine Machine, its design and
all of
its components as shown and described on the attached drawings and literature;
2. The concept and process that this machine uses to create power to create
electricity. More specifically described as having adjustable vertical fins
redirect
natural wind to a different angle, giving a more direct, powerful and positive
thrust to a number of vertical flat or curved interior turbine blades;
3 This machine's enclosed turbine blades and turntable behind fixed or
adjustable
fins;
4. This machine's exterior stationary fixed or movable fin system for
directing the
angle of the natural incoming wind;
5. Surrounding the total turbine with special curved or shaped fins including
the
venturi effect created by these fins on the incoming wind to increase its
speed
and direction;
6. The use of weights or the exterior of the bottom turntable to increase
torque on
the drive shaft;
7. The vertical orientation of this wind turbine machine
8. Ability to take full power from the wind regardless of how the wind speed
is
changing or its direction.
9. The utilization of fins, baffles or louvres to change the direction of
natural wind
and/or to increase the speed of the natural wind for the sole purpose of
driving a
secondary wind turbine blades for the creation of electrical energy.
10. Tilting the movable turbine blades at the top slightly into the wind to
give the
turning wheel a lifting effect as it is turning so it is floating and taking
the weight
off the centre thrust bearing.
11. The use of permanent magnets at the exterior of larger Wind Turbine
wheels.
Once spinning these opposing magnets keep the weight off the end of the wheel,
floating and reducing drag that would occur if wheels where used.
12. Use of exterior screening to protect birds

Vertical Enclosed .All-Directional Wind Turbine Machine
Background of this invention
Windmills and wind machines have been around for over two thousand years,
from the early sailors using wind power to move their ships and the Dutch who
have
used windmills for hundreds of years. Our search revealed that there are no
vertical
wind turbine wheels being used today nor are there any that use the venturi
effect to
give greater power to any electricity generating wind wheels or wind machines.
Summary of this Invention
Most windmills and wind machines have utilized the natural wind blowing on
large blades, that always face into the wind and turn at the speed dictated by
the
speed of the naturally occurring wind.
The Vertical Enclosed All-Directional Wind Turbine Machine uses the venturi
effect created by the special shape and size of the adjustable vertical
directional fins
located on the exterior of this wind turbine machine. The inner blades are
forced to
turn in the direction and speed dictated by the angle of the outer fins and
the speed
generated by the natural wind, combined with the extra power given by the
venturi
effect.
This machine is stationary and does not have to turn to face the wind, the
exterior fins change the wind's direction to ensure the inner blades are
always turning in
the correct direction. (See Drawings: Figures One, Two, Three and Four)
The Vertical Enclosed All-Directional Wind Turbine Machine has a centre
vertical
drive shaft connected to larger vertical blades that are turned by the wind,
this vertical
drive shaft is connected to generators that turns to give electrical power.
Details and description of this invention: How and Why it works
This invention will derive electricity from the power of naturally occurring
wind
and at a wind speed much slower than that required by the present wind
machines.
The percentage of power generated by the Vertical Enclosed All-Directional
Wind
Turbine Machine will be greater than existing wind machines for the following
reasons:-

CA 02439420 2003-09-02
Vertical Enclosed All-Directional Wind Turbine Machine
1 ) Utilizing the venturi effect
2) Regardless of which way the wind is blowing, changing or gusting, the
exterior
fins will always exert full force of any existing wind directly to the inner
turbine
blades.
3) Unlike other windmill blades that the winds glance off, and only a portion
of the
wind power is used, the blades on the Vertical Enclosed All-Directional Wind
Turbine Machine are flat or cupped and the incoming wind hits them at about
90~ with the effect that much more power will be generated (as opposed to the
present wind machine designs.)
4) This wind machine will be smaller and quieter than existing wind machines,
which will allow them to be placed on roof tops of high rise buildings, etc.
Eventually this will create smaller grid systems.
5) This machine will be inexpensive to build. It will be quiet and have a low
maintenance factor
6) The larger machines over 50 feet in diameter will have an outside rail to
support
its weight. This rail will have permanent magnets attached to the rail and the
underside of the spinning wheel. These magnets will be positive and negative
which will give the spinning wheel support without touching anything that
would
create a drag effect.
7) Due to screening around the exterior this design will not harm birds.
8) Since this is a solid object, it will not interfere with radar as the
present windmill
types do.
