SAW GUIDE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Technical Field
This invention relates to handheld circular saws, and more particularly to a
guide device designed for incorporation with such a handheld circular saw.
Background Art
It has long been necessary to trim sheets of building materials, for example
the standard 4' times 8' sheet of plywood, wood paneling or gypsum
wallboard, to a precise width, for carpenters working on the job, the
handheld circular saw is the tool of choice for such a trimming operation, to
provide a precise straight edge at the cut or trimmed location.
A search of prior art records has unveiled the following patents:
1. US 6,757,981 issued in 2004 to Hampton;
2. US 6,708,422 issued in 2004 to Stojanovski;
3. US 5,365,822 issued in 1994 to Stapleton et al.;
4. US 4,453,438 issued in 1984 to Zelli; and
5. CA 1,186,597 issued in 1985 to Jensen.
Although of each of the foregoing has had particular advantages, so no one
saw guide is capable of economical construction while yet being universally

suited to precisely trim a large range of materials.
Accordingly, improved constructions for a guide device for a handheld
circular saw.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention provides a particularly guide device for handheld circular saw
which is capable to make precise and straight cuts in sheets of paneling
plywood and wallboard at a desired angle relative to the edge of the
material, and which saves the user immeasurable time in a situation where
there is a desire to make repetitive cuts of a precise nature.
Such handheld circular saws incorporate an electric motor disposed within a
housing which rotates a shaft to which the circular saw blade is attached,
with the housing being adjustably supported on a flat surface which rests
against the flat surface of the sheet of paneling plywood being trimmed.
The guide device includes a longitudinally extending elongated flat plate
which is provided for mounting a square and a guide rail, of which a guide
roller secured to the base plate of the circular saw slides thereon for
longitudinal movement therealong.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon
reading the following detailed description and upon reference to the

drawings throughout the drawings like reference numerals refer to like
parts.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
This invention will be further explained with reference to the accompanying
drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a rear perspective view of a guide device in accordance with the
present invention, and used with circular saw;
FIG. 2 is a front perspective view thereof.
FIGS. 3a, 3b show the functioning of the guide device in accordance with
the present invention, as mounted to a sheet of plywood and used with
circular saw;

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
As illustrated in FIG. 3a, the handheld circular saw B with the guide device
installed is then positioned upon the upper surface of a sheet of plywood F
to be cut or trimmed.
The operator will be begin at one end edge of the sheet of plywood with
the guide device resting flat upon the upper surface of the sheet of plywood
and aligned so that to be flushed against the edge of the sheet of plywood.
Thereafter when the operator actuates the trigger and slowly moves the

circular saw B along the length of the sheet of plywood F, maintaining the
guide device flush against the edge of the sheet of plywood a precise and
straight kerf is cut as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3b.
As illustrated in FIGS, 5 to 6, the guide device includes a longitudinally
elongated flat plate C having an extension D clipped therewith, which
is provided for mounting a square E and a guide rail, of which a guide roller
A secured to the base plate of the circular saw B slides thereon for
longitudinal movement therealong.
As illustrated in FIG. 6 the guide roller A preferably includes a T-shaped
member (1)(2) which is fixed to two rollers 5 by means of rivets 6 that
extend through washers 7, apertures 4, holes 3, and connected thereby nuts
8, and of which may be locked to the base plate of the circular saw in any
suitable manner.
As can be seen, the guide roller A can be quickly and easily installed to a
circular saw B, and slidably movable along the longitudinal lenght of the
flat plate with square E for cutting a sheet of material F to a precise
width desired.
The guide rail has a depth that is just slightly deeper than the thickness of
the flat plate so as to fit in surrounding relationship about the profile of
the

flat plate.
It is feasible to construct the guide device so as to permit the cutting of
sheet workpieces to predetermined widths up to about 12 inches.
Accordingly, while the preferred embodiments of the invention have been
described above, it will be recognized and understood that various
modifications may be made in the invention and the appended claims are
intended to cover all such modifications which fall within the spirit and
scope of the invention.
