This invention relates to manually operating tool for removal of gang-nail plates from wood members used to manufacture floor and roof trusses. The tool is comprised of a handle (2) which has a lower notched chisel jaw (1), upper grab teeth (7), and a cam lift (8) attached to the base end of the handle (2). The opposite end of the handle (2), is designed to be struck with a hammer so that force can be applied to lower notched chisel jaw (1) for penetration under the edge of a gang-nail plate in an open position. A jaw clamp lever (3) applies upper grab teeth (7) to protrude into the gang-nail plate in the closed position. Applying down pressure to handle causes rotation of the lower notched chisel jaw (1) and upper grab teeth (7) about the cam lift (8) to extract and remove the gang-nail plate from the wood surface.

Revendications

CLAIMS
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege
is claimed
are defined as follows:
1. A manually operable tool for removal of gang-nail plates from floor and/or
roof truss lumber
members, comprising:
a handle (2) having a base end and a striking end;
a lower notched chisel jaw (1) attached to the base end of said handle;
an upper grab teeth (7) pivotally attached to the base end of said handle for
rotational
movement of said lower notched chisel jaw from an open position to a closed
position;
a pressure lever (3) attached to said upper grab teeth and said handle; and
a cam lift (8) attached to the base end of said handle opposite said lower
notched chisel
jaw.
2. A tool according to claim 1 whereby said lower notched chisel jaw is forced
under the gang-nail
plate by a force applied to the striking end of said handle, said pressure
lever is activated to move
said lower notched chisel jaw from an open position to a closed position to
allow said upper grab
teeth to protrude down through the gang-nail plate, and a downward pressure is
applied manually
to said handle causing a pivoting motion about said cam lift to cause a
lifting and extraction of the
gang-nail plate from the lumber member.
3. A tool according to claim 1 wherein said lower notched chisel jaw having
slots to allow said
upper grab teeth to protrude down through openings of the gang-plates.
4. A tool according to claim 1 wherein a tie rod (5) is connected to the base
of said jaw clamp
lever (3) at an upper end and connected to said upper grab teeth (7) at a
lower end of said tie rod.

5. A tools according to claim 4 wherein said tie rod (5) is guided through a
tie rod guide (6).

6. A method for removal of a gang-nail plate from floor and/or truss lumber
members
comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a tool as according to claim 1;
(b) aligning said lower notched chisel jaw with said gang-nail plate;
(c) striking the striking end of the handle with a hammer so that a force can
be applied to
said lower notched chisel jaw for penetration under said gang-nail plate;
(d) applying pressure on said pressure lever to move said upper grab teeth
from an open
position to a closed position for allowing said upper grab teeth to protrude
down through
the gang-nail plate; and
(e) applying a downward pressure to said handle causing a pivoting motion
about said cam
lift to cause a lifting and extraction of the gang-nail plate from the lumber
member.
7. A method according to claim 6 wherein once the gang-nail plate has been
removed from the
lumber member, said lever handle is applied to said open position causing said
grab teeth to
release said gang-nail plate from said notched chisel jaw and said upper grab
teeth.

FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to manually operating tool for removal of gang-nail
plates from wood
members used to manufacture floor and roof trusses.
BACKGROUND ART
During the manufacturing process of floor and roof trusses, it may be
necessary to remove
gang-nail plates. To date, removal of gang-nail plates is done by method of
hammer and chisel or
using a type of crowbar. Either method results in splintering of the wood
members and total
destruction of the gang-nail plate. This application is time consuming and
costly. Not only are the
gang-nail plates not reusable, the lumber members result in large pieces of
wood gouged from
them, making them no longer usable.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an aspect of this invention to provide a tool that is much more
efficient in removing and
dislodging gang-nail plates from wood members in a matter of seconds.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a tool having a
handle with a base end
and a striking end, a lower notched chisel jaw is attached to the base end of
said handle, an upper
grab teeth is pivotally attached to the base end of said handle for rotational
movement of said
lower notched chisel jaw from an open position to a closed position. A
pressure lever is attached
to said upper grab teeth and said handle, and a cam lift is attached to the
base end of said handle
opposite said lower notched chisel jaw.
By forcing said lower notched chisel jaw under the gang-nail plate by a force
applied to the
striking end of said handle, the pressure lever is activated to move the lower
notched chisel jaw
from an open position to a closed position to allow said upper grab teeth to
protrude down through
the gang-nail plate. A downward pressure is applied manually to said handle
causing a pivoting

motion about said cam lift to cause a lifting and extraction of the gang-nail
plate from the lumber
member.
Preferably, the lower notched chisel jaw having slots to allow said upper grab
teeth to protrude
down through openings of the gang-plates. A tie rod is connected to the base
of said jaw clamp
lever at an upper end and connected to the upper grab teeth at a lower end of
tie rod. In a
preferred embodiment, the tie rod is guided through a tie rod guide.
It is a further aspect of this invention to provide a method for removal of a
gang-nail plate from
floor and/or truss lumber members comprising the steps of aligning said lower
notched chisel jaw
with said gang-nail plate; striking the striking end of the handle with a
hammer so that a force can
be applied to said lower notched chisel jaw for penetration under said gang-
nail plate; applying
pressure on said pressure lever to move said upper grab teeth from an open
position to a closed
position for allowing said upper grab teeth to protrude down through the gang-
nail plate; and
applying a downward pressure to said handle causing a pivoting motion about
said cam lift to
cause a lifting and extraction of the gang-nail plate from the lumber member.
Once the gang-nail plate has been removed from the lumber member, said lever
handle is applied
to said open position causing said grab teeth to release said gang-nail plate
from said notched
chisel jaw and said upper grab teeth. This method is safer and requires no
electricity.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIlyiENT OF THE IWVENTION
In drawings, which illustrate embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a full
view elevation of
Gang-Nail Extractor in the open position. Figure 2 is a full view of Gang-Nail
Extractor in the
closed position.
The tool illustrated in Figure 1, is comprised of a handle (2), which has a
lower notched chisel jaw
(1) connected to the base of the handle (2). The opposite end of the handle
(2), is designed to be
struck with a hammer so that force can be applied to lower notched chisel jaw
(1) for penetration
under the edge of a gang-nail plate.
During this action, a jaw clamp lever (3) is in the open position. Once the
lower notched chisel
jaw (,t) is in position under edge of gang-nail plate, the jaw clamp lever (3)
is then moved to a
closed position by pivoting about ajaw clamp lever pivot (4).
With this action, a tie rod (5), which is connected to the base of jaw clamp
lever (3), is guided
through a tie rod guide (6). At the lower end of the tie rod (5), upper grab
teeth (7) are connected.
With jaw clamp lever (3) in closed position, this applies upper grab teeth (7)
to protrude through
hole or holes in the gang-nail plate.
Applying down pressure to handle causes pressure on a cam lift (8) which
causes rotation of the
lower notched chisel jaw (1) and upper grab teeth (7) about the cam lift (8)
so as to extract and
remove the gang-nail plate from the wood surface. To release the gang-nail
plate from the upper
grab teeth (7) and the lower notched chisel jaw (1), the jaw clamp lever
handle (3) is placed in the
open position.
