A grinding machine setting arrangement
The present invention relates to a grinding machine setting
arrangement and more particularly to a rig mounted grinding
machine for grinding button drill bits or crowns.
Button bits are subjected to a great deal of wear and must be
well sharpened or honed in order to be able to drill rock
effectively. Poorly ground bits not only result in impairment
of drilling efficiency but also result in significant strain
and wear on the drill pipe and rig.
It is therefore highly necessary to, sharpen or hone button
bits at regular intervals. Special semiautomatic machines for
grinding the buttons have been made available to the art, and
also for grounding down the steel that includes the buttons.
Also available are transportable grinders which enable bits
to be ground on the drilling site. These grinders may be
semiautomatic or operated manually and are exclusively of the
type that uses grinding cups.
There has therefore been provided a grinder of this kind that
can function at least semi automatically and that can be
fitted to a drilling rig or to a readily transported separate
device. Such a grinder is described in WO 2004/080651 Al. One
difficulty that is overcome with the aid of such a grinder
resides in enabling the drill bit to be ground to be centered
readily beneath the grinder and there firmly locked in posi-
tion.
Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to pro-
vide a grinding machine setting arrangement which enables the
drill bit to be ground to be readily positioned relative to
the grinding machine and firmly locked in this position.

2
This object is achieved with a grinding machine setting ar-
rangement for grinding button bits or crowns, wherein the
grinding machine includes a grinding unit which is mounted
for displacement in the vertical plane and wherein the drill
bit is carried by a holder that can be moved in the horizon-
tal plane so that each button in the button bit can be cen-
tered in relation to the grinding disc of the grinding unit,
wherein the holder carrying the drill bit can be locked in
each bit setting relative to the grinding unit, wherein the
holder is connected to a fixed attachment by means of a set-
ting mechanism which includes a first elongate arm that ex-
tends out from the holder and a second arm which also extends
from the holder although from a different point thereon than
said first arm, wherein the first arm includes a longitudi-
nally extending slot and the second arm includes a slot that
intersects the slot in the first arm, and wherein the holder
has connected thereto a locking device which includes a lock-
ing pin that extends through both of the slots in said arms
and which further includes a locking mechanism that is
adapted to firmly lock the locking device and therewith also
the arms in their selected settings.
The invention will now be described in more detail with ref-
erence to non-limiting embodiments and also with reference to
the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective
view of a setting mechanism according to the invention as
seen obliquely from beneath; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the
setting mechanism according to the invention as seen from
below; Fig. 3 is a view of the setting mechanism according to
the invention as seen directly from one side; and Fi.g. 4 is a
view of the setting mechanism according to the invention as
seen from the attachment side.

3
According to the present invention, the setting mechanism 1
is intended for a rig mounted grinding machine which includes
a grinding unit mounted for displacement in the vertical
plane with the button bit to be ground carried by a holder.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the setting
mechanism according to the present invention includes an
attachment means 3 which is connected to the grinding machine
which, in turn, is firmly mounted to a drilling rig. Provided
on the opposite side of the setting mechanism is a holder
attachment 2 for supporting a holder which, in turn, supports
the button bit to be ground.
As will be seen from Fig. 1, the setting mechanism also in-
cludes a first arm, an elongate arm 4, which extends out from
the holder attachment 2 to a locking device 10. The elongate
arm 4 includes an elongate slot 5 which extends in the longi-
tudinal direction of the arm 4. The setting mechanism also
includes a second arm, an angular arm 6, which is connected
to the holder attachment 2 via an intermediate arm 7 and,
which extends towards the locking device 10. The angular arm
6 includes a curved slot 8 which extends in an arc around the
outer part of the angular arm 6. The two slots 5 and 8 mutu-
ally intersect and a locking pin 9 belonging to said locking
device extends through respective slots, as described in more
detail hereinafter. The locking device is mounted in the
grinding machine and functions to lock the holder attachment
means firmly in relation to the elongate arm 4 and the angu-
lar arm 6.
The elongate arm 4 and the intermediate arm 7 are both ro-
tatably or pivotally connected to the holder attachment 2
through the medium of respective bearings 11 and 12. The
angular arm is, in turn, rotatably or pivotally connected to
the intermediate arm 7. As will be seen from the Figures, the

4
bearings 11 and 12 are mutually spaced at the holder attach-
ment. The journals 11 and 12 and the locking pin 9 that ex-
tends through the slots 5 and 8 in the elongate arm 4 and the
angular arm 6 enable the elongate arm 4 and the angular arm 6
to be moved to selected points within a defined area in the
horizontal plane, provided that the locking device 10 is not
active in locking the elongate arm 4 and the angular arm 6
relative to one another. The defined area is determined by
placement of the pivot journals on the one hand and by the
lengths of the slots 5, 8 and their positions in relation to
the journals 11 and 12 on the other. Correct dimensioning of
the arms and the journals will herewith allow the holder
attachment 2 to be moved in the horizontal plane so that a
button bit carried by the holder can be brought to respective
positions in which each button bit is positioned precisely
beneath the grinding disc of the grinding unit.
As earlier mentioned the locking device is seated firmly in
the grinding machine and includes a locking pin 9 which ex-
tends through the slots 5 and 8 in the elongate arm 4 and the
angular arm 6 respectively. The free end of the locking pin
carries a counter pressure element. The locking device 10
also includes a spring mechanism 13 which is adapted to press
normally against the elongate arm 4 and therewith lock the
arm to the angular arm 6, such as to lock the holder attach-
ment 2, and therewith also the drill bit carried indirectly
by the holder attachment, against movement in the horizontal
plane. In order to enable the locking device 10 to be re-
leased and the spring mechanism to be retracted, the locking
device includes an actuator which moves the spring mechanism
out of abutment with the elongate arm 4 and therefore no
longer locks the holder attachment 2, thus allowing the
holder attachment 2 to be moved to an appropriate bit grind-
ing position The actuator may be controlled hydraulically or

CA 02588835 2007-05-29
WO 2006/065201 PCT/SE2005/001856
pneumatically, such as to move the spring means 13 out of
abutment with the arms 4, 6 in response to hydraulic or pneu-
matic pressure. It will be understood, however, that the
actuator may be driven in some other way, such as by an elec-
5 tric motor or simply manually in the case of an eccentric
lock, e.g.
Although the locking device 10 has been described above as
being designed to be brought to a locking mode with the aid
of a spring force and to a release mode with the aid of a
pressure medium, it will be understood that the reverse ac-
tion is possible, wherewith pressure medium is supplied to
lock the setting mechanism firmly in a set position and
wherewith the setting mechanism is otherwise free to move.
The locking device 10 may be maneuvered conveniently by means
of a handle (not shown) which is placed on the holder attach-
ment and which can also be used to move the holder attachment
physically so that pressure medium will be delivered to the
locking device immediately the handle is pressed down,
therewith also enabling the handle to be used as a means of
positioning the setting mechanism 1 so that a drill bit car-
ried by the holder attachment 2 of the setting mechanism can
be placed in position beneath the grinding disc of the grind-
ing unit.
It may be appropriate to arrange for the setting mechanism 1
to be maneuverable solely when the grinding unit is in a
raised or elevated state and cannot therefore come into con-
tact with a drill bit that is to be ground, and for the re-
verse to be applicable so that the grinding unit can only be
lowered down towards the drill bit when the setting mechanism
1 is locked.
