CA 02627707 2008-03-28
1
Method for winding web reel and web winding apparatus
[001] The invention relates to a method for winding a web reel by a carrier-
roll
winder, in which method, the web is wound around cores radially supported by a
first
and a second carrier roll or equivalent and in which the centre part of the
reel is
supported in the axial direction of the reel to a core locking device by means
of a core
socket, which core locking device has a first degree of freedom in the
direction of the
plane of the end of the reel.
[002] The invention also relates to a web winding apparatus, which comprises a
first
and a second carrier roll supported by which the web reel is formable, a guide
arrangement which is substantially vertical in relation to a plane formed by
the rotation
axes of the first and the second roll, a core locking device fitted in the
guide
arrangement which forms for the core locking device its first degree of
freedom in the
direction of the plane of the end of the reel being formed, and displacement
elements
of the core locking device which allow the core locking device its second
degree of
freedom in the direction of the plane of the end of the reel being formed,
deviating from
the direction of the first degree of freedom.
[003] Also, slitter-winders are known from prior art in which carrier roll
winders of
variable geometry are used for winding partial rolls after the slitting of the
web in which
one or both of the carrier rolls/sets of rolls carrying the reel are
displaceable. On such
variable-geometric slitter-winders, the horizontal location of the centre of
the reel being
formed depends on the position of the carrier rolls/sets of rolls in relation
to each other
and the diameter of the reel. On the winders, reels are wound around cores.
Longitudinal successive cores are locked in place as a core array by a core
locking
device located at both ends. From prior art is known a core locking device
which is
located on a guide arranged into connection with the winder movable when the
diameter of the reel increases as its centre is displaced. Thus, the position
of the core
locking device changes during run. The position of the core locking device
moving
away from the carrier rolls on the guide also changes when the direction of
motion of
the centres of the reels being formed changes, when one or both rolls are
displaced on
the variable-geometric winder as the winding proceeds.
[004] Thus, the core locking device has to have, in addition to the rotational
motion of
the reels supported in the axial direction to be controlled, a substantially
uertical

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
2
degree of freedom which is mainly responsible for the motion caused by the
increase
of the reel diameters and a substantially horizontal degree of freedom which
is
required because, e.g. due to the asymmetric geometry of the winder, the
motion of
the centre line of the reels is not linear and straight.
[005] Specification Fl 116281 describes a core locking device which is fitted
in a
carriage moving on guides pivotedly at the end of a support arm. By means of
this, the
above-mentioned substantially vertical and horizontal motion of the centre of
the reels
can be implemented during winding. When the core locking device rotates, the
rotated
core locking device and its support arm cause force in the centrs of the reel
which
force is dependent on the rotation angle and the mass of the device. However,
this
type of arrangement requires continuous control of relieving force and the
mass of the
core lock also affects the vibration properties of the core locking device.
[006] The object of the invention is indeed to provide a web winding device
and a
method by which the control of the winding process will be simpler.
[007] In this context, the terms carrier-roll winder, carrier roll and winding
roll should
be understood such that the word roll means a roll, an entity of several rolls
and an
endless belt loop or equivalent. Furthermore, the existence of the vertical
and
horizontal degree of freedom here means that the motion -can include a
component in
this direction, but the direction of the resultant of the components, the
actual motion
can deviate from the vertical and horizontal direction.
[008] The objects of the invention are achieved according to its first
embodiment with
a method for winding a web reel by a carrier-roll winder, in which method, the
web is
wound around cores radially supported by a first and a second carrier roll
or~equivalent
and in which the centre part of the reel is supported in the axial direction
of the reel to
a core locking device by means of a core socket, which core locking device has
a first
degree of freedom in the direction of the plane of the end of the reel. It is
characteristic
of the invention that the winding event comprises at least a first step in
which the
motion of the centre of the reel being formed is substantially guided in the
direction of
the first degree of freedom of the core locking device by displacing the first
carrier roll
in relation to the second carrier roll during winding.

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
3
[009] This way, the core locking device forms in winding a very rigid entity,
which
improves the quality of the winding process. According to an embodiment, the
structure of the core locking device is such that it only has the first degree
of freedom
in the direction of the plane of the end of the reel. Then, its mass is
smaller and it is
thus more advantageous from the viewpoint of controlling vibrations.
[0010] The core lock has thus at least the first degree of freedom in the
direction of
the plane of the end of the reel being formed. According to an advantageous
embodiment, the core lock also has the second degree of freedom in the
direction of
the plane of the end of the reel, the direction of which deviates from the
direction of the
first degree of freedom. This enables a more flexible control of the winding
process.
[0011] According to this embodiment, the winding event comprises a second step
in
which the positions of the first and the second carrier roll are kept
unchanged and in
which the second degree of freedom of the core locking device is locked and
released
periodically such that force smaller than predetermined is applied to the
winding core
and/or the core locking device during the second degree of freedom of the core
locking
device being locked. In this winding step, the centre of the reel is displaced
mainly in
the direction defined by the increase of the reel. The position of the carrier
rolls in
relation to each other has an impact on the vibration behaviour of the
apparatus. For
this reason, the procedure in accordance with the second step according to the
invention is necessary in certain conditions. However, many other issues
affect the
winding event, such as paper grade, the geometry and structure of the
apparatus, run
speed and reel size.
[0012] According to an advantageous embodiment, the core locking device also
has
the second degree of freedom in the direction of the plane of the end of the
reel, the
direction of which deviates from the dirsction of the first degree of freedom.
Then in
the first step, the second degree of freedom of the core locking device is
locked.
[0013] According to an embodiment of the invention, the force applying to the
winding
core and/or the core locking device is measured and the duration of the
locking of the
second degree of freedom of the core locking device is kept such that the
measured
force is smaller than the predetermined force.

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
4
[0014] According to another embodiment of the invention, the first carrier
roll is
controlled such that the roll diameter is defined or measured and the position
of the
first carrier roll at each point of time is calculated based on this with a
predetermined
model.
[0015] According to a further embodiment of the invention, the first carrier
roll is
controlled by calculating the position of the first carrier roll at each point
of time with a
predetermined model. The model can be defined empirically or caMulatority.
[0016] According to a further embodiment of the invention, the force applying
to the
winding core and/or the core locking device is measured and the first
carrier.roll is
controlled such that the measured force is smaller than the predetermined
force.
[0017] The method according to the invention is particularly advantageous in
acarrier-
roll winder in which the carrier rolls have different diameters.
[0018] Prior-art problems are solved in accordance with a further embodiment
according to the invention by a method for winding a web reel by a carrier-
roll winder
which comprises a first and a second carrier roll, the position of which in
relation to
each other is changeable. In the method, the web is wound around cores
radially
supported by the first and the second carrier roll or equivalent and in which
the acentre
part of the reel is supported in the axial direction of the reel to a core
locking device by
means of a core socket, which core locking device has a first degree of
freedom in the
direction of the plane of the end of the reel and a second degree of freedom
in the
direction of the plane of the end of the reel, the riirection of which
deviates from the
direction of the first degree of freedom. It is characteristic of this
embodiment that the
winding event comprises a step in which the positions of the first and the
second
carrier roll are kept unchanged and in which the second degree of freedom of
the core
locking device is limited such that force smaller than predetermined is
applied to the
winding core.
[0019] The limitation of the degree of freedom can in practice be damping,
braking or
total locking of the motion. Also this has an impact on the vibration
behaviour of the
core locking device advantageously decreasing the vulnerability to the
creation of
vibration. In practice, this can be implemented such that the motion of the
displacement elements of the core locking device is limited e.g. based on the
force

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
measurement of its brake device. Force measurement can also be located e.g. in
the
spindle of the core locking device.
[0020] The limitation of the horizontal degree of freedom occurs according to
an
5 embodiment such that the degree of freedom is locked and released
periodically such
that force smaller than predetermined is applied to the winding core during
the locking
of the horizontal degree of freedom of the core locking device.
[0021] The objects of the invention are achieved by a web winding apparatus,
which
comprises a first and a second carrier roll supported by which the web reel is
formable,
a guide arrangement which is substantially vertical in relation to a plane
formed by the
rotation axes of the first and the second roll, a core locking device fitted
in the guide
arrangement which forms for the core locking device its first, vertical degree
of
freedom, displacement elements of the core locking device which allow the core
locking device its second, horizontal degree of freedom. It is characteristic
of the
winding apparatus according to the invention that the position of the carrier
rolls of the
winding apparatus in relation to each other is changeable during the run of
the winder
and that the second degree of freedom of the core locking device is lockable
and
releasable during the run of the winder.
[0022] According to an embodiment, the displacement elements of the core
locking
device comprise an arm part rotatably fitted at its one end in the body part
of the core
locking device, at the other end of which a spindle of the core locking device
is fitted.
[0023] According to another embodiment, the displacement 4etements of the core
locking device comprise an additional body part fitted with auxiliary guides
in the body
part of the core locking device, the direction of the linear motion enabled by
which
auxiliary guides is substantially perpendicular in relation to the direction
of motion
enabled by the guide arrangement, and in which additional body part the
spindle of the
core locking device is fitted.
[0024] Other characteristic features of the method and apparatus according to
the
invention are illustrated in the accompanying claims.
[0025] Advantages achieved by the invention include the following:

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
6
- the tendency of the core locking device for vibration during winding has
been
minimised,
- the selectable position of the carrier rolls in relation to each other
improves
possibilities in affecting the minimising of the vibration of the reels,
- the lockable second degree of freedom of the core locking device enabkes a
winding process in which the risk of the creation of eoccentricity of the
reels cores
decreases.
[0026] The invention and its operation will now be described with reference to
the
accompanying schematic figures in which
Fig. 1 shows an arrangement according to prior art,
Fig. 2 shows an advantageous embodiment according to the invention,
Fig. 3 shows another advantageous embodiment according to the invention, and
Fig. 4 shows the course of a winding process according to an embodiment of the
invention.
[0027] The carrier-roll winder of Fig. 1 comprises a carrier-roll winder 10
the main
parts of which are winder rolls, a front roll 12 and a rear roll 14. The front
roll 12 is here
an entity formed by two rolls and a belt or a set of belts arranged to rotate
around
them. From the web being guided on the winder is formed supported by the
carrier
rolls one or more axially successive reels 16. In the vicinity of both ends of
the carrier
rolls of the winder, there is a substantially vertical guide 18. In the guide,
a core locking
device 20 is fitted movable as shown by arrow 22. The core locking device
comprises
an arm part 28 fitted rotatably as shown by arrow 28 at its one end in the
body part 26
of the core locking device, at the other end of which a spindle 30 of the core
locking
device is fitted. A winding spool, which is typically a core, is supported in
winding by
means of the spindle 30 in the core locking device 20. In arrangements
according to
prior art, the motion of the centre of the reel being formed, which in 'Fig. 1
is
designated with line L, is not linear and thus the core locking device
according to
known prior art requires a continuous horizontal degree of freedom i.e. the
displacement of the spindle 30 substantially in the horizontal direction.
[0028] In an embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 2, there is as well
the.carrier-
roll winder 10 and Fig. 2 uses corresponding reference numbering as in Fig. 1
where
there are corresponding elements. In the winder according to the invention,
there are
also the winder rolls, the front roll 12 and the rear roll 14. The front roll
12 is in this

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
7
embodiment in fact also an entity formed by two rolls and a belt or a set of
belts
arranged to rotate around them. 'From the web being guided on the winder is
formed
supported by the carrier rolls a set of axially successive reels 1,5. In the
vicinity of both
ends of the carrier rolls of the winder, there is the substantially vertical
guide 18 of
which this presentation shows only one. In both guides, the core locking
device 20 is
fitted movable along it as shown by arrow 22 (enables the first degree of
freedom).
The purpose of the core locking device is to keep the cores during the whole
winding
in the same places in the axial direction yet to allow the cores to move
almost without
resistance in the vertical direction and often also in the machine direction.
[0029] The core locking device comprises the arm part 28 fitted rotatably as
shown by
arrow 28 at its one end in the body part 26 of the core locking device
{enables the
second degree of freedom). At the other end of the arm part 28 is fitted the
spindle 30
of the core locking device. This operates as the displacement element of the
core
locking device. The winding core is supported in winding by means of the
spindle 30
and a core socket 31 in the core locking device 20.
[0030] The variable-geometric carrier-roll winder of a slitter-winder shown in
Fig. 2
additionally comprises in connection with the core locking dev'rce a brake
device 32 in
the area of a curved path 24 of the arm part which brake device is formed of a
brake
disc 34 and an actuator affecting it, such as a brake actuator 36, the
cylinder (not
shown) of which is arranged to compress a separate friction lpad against the
surface of
the brake disc. Then, the brake can operate e.g. hydraulically or-
pneumatically.
[0031] The brake actuator 36 is fitted in the arm part by means of a force
measurement part 38. Advantageously, the rotating force applied to the ar-m
part is
measured when the winder is running.
[0032] The core locking device also comprises a power unit 21 ~coupled between
the
arm part 28 and the body part 26. The power unit can be e.g. a hydraulic
cylinder ot a
compressed air cylinder. It can be used for moving the arm part, among others.
[0033] The support of the rear roll 14 of the winder comprises a displacement
mechanism 40 of the roll with its power unit, which enables changing the
position of
the roll during the run of the winder.

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
8
[0034] The winder also comprises a control system 100 by which the operation
of the
winder is controlled. The control system is in a data transfer communication
101 with
the displacement mechanism of the rear roll 14 as well as with the core
locking device
for controlling it and its actuators and for-communicating measuring data in
the control
system. In the core locking device, there advantageously are at least the
above-
mentioned force measurement part 38 and also a measuring sensor~not showri) of
the
angle of the arm part 28.
[0035] The winder shown in Fig. 2 operates. such that, as the winding
proceeds,
whereby the size of the reel thus increases continuously and its centre is
displaced
along a.certain path defined by the geometry of the winder, mainly the size of
the
winding rolls 12, 14 and the position of the rear roll 14. According to the
invention, the
winding event comprises at least a first step in which the motion of the
centre of the
reel being formed is substantially guided in the direction of the.first degree
of freedom
22 of the core locking device by displacing the rear roll 14, which here
illustrates the
first carrier roll, in relation to the set of =belt rolls 12, which here
illustrates the second
carrier roll, during winding. This direction is parallel with the direction of
the guide
arrangement 18. Thus, the substantially horizontal degree of freedom 28 of
tlhe core
locking device is lockable. From this is gained the- advantage that the impact
of the
core locking device on vibrations has been minimised. The locking takes place
such
that the control system 100 controls the brake actuator 36 to lock the
position of the
arm part against the surface of the brake disc 34. According to the invention,
the
locking can be periodical and the time of the brake of being released is still
shorter
than the time of being locked. When the operation of the winder is controlled
this way,
it is advantageous to use an elastic joint between the spindle and the core
socket of
the core locking device.
[0036] The motion of the centre.of the reels is thus controllable to occur
substantially
linearly along path L' by moving one of the rolls 14 carrying the web reels in
a suitable
way. The motion of the roll 14 is defined according to an advantageous
embodiment of
the invention by calculating the position of the roll at each time from the
diameter of
the reels and the geometry of the machine. This way of control enables the
locking of
the horizontal degree of freedom in place during winding or its considerable
damping
by braking.

CA 02627707 2008-03-28
9
[0037] The motion of the roll 14 carrying the reel is also implementable by
measuring
the force caused by braking the horizontal degree of freedom of the core
locking
device 20. Then, the motion of the roll 14 is controlled for minimising this
force or for
keeping the force smaller than a predetermined set value. The required motion
of the
carrier roll in relation to the diameter of the reel can also be defined -
empirically.
[0038] The horizontal degree of freedom 24 of the core locking device 20 is
brakeable
or lockable during winding also such that the brake 34 fitted into connection
with the
core locking device is controlled on and off based on the braking force
measured by
the force measurement part 38 such that the force does not increase over a
certain
limit, whereby there is necessarily/continuously no need to move the -carrier
roll 14.
When the horizontal direction of the core locking device is mostly locked, an
impact
decreasing the vibration of the core locking device is provided at least in
some
amount.
[0039] Fig. 3 shows an arrangement operationally corresponding 'Fig. 2. The
reference
numbering of Fig. 3 corresponds the reference numbering of Fig. 2 for the part
of
corresponding elements and features. In this embodiment, the horizontal degree
of
freedom is provided instead of the pivoted arm part with a second carriage 28'
which is
shown with a dashed line. For enabling this, the second carriage -28' is
arranged
movable on second guides 28" in a corresponding way as in the embodiment of
Fig. 2.
[0040] Fig. 4 illustrates, according to an embodiment, the motion of the reel
centre in
the winding process occurring with a method according to the invention. The
structure
of the actual winder differs from the embodiments of Figs. 2 and 3 such that
the path
of the rear roll 14 is at an angle in relation to the horizontal plane. Here
the reel
forming is controlled to take place first such that, when the reel 16.1
increases, its
centre has proceeded in the direction and position shown by line L1 which thus
joins
the direction of motion of the guide arrangement 18. During this, the
horizontal degree
of freedom of the core locking device has been locked and the rear roll 14 has
moved
towards the front roll 12. In point P1 in which the situation of the reel has
been
illustrated with the reel 16.2, the brake actuator 36 of the core locking
device has been
released. Then, the rear roll is in position 14.2. The reel centre has moved
due to the
release of the horizontal degree of freedom a distance in the horizontal
direction at the
same time as winding along line L2 of the reel centre has occurred, the rear
roll being
in position 14.2. After position P3 of the reel centre, the rear roll has

away from the front roll towards position 14.3, the reel centre moving along
line L3 into
point P3 which corresponds position 14.3 of the rear roll. After this, winding
has been
continued in the second position in the direction shown by line L4, the
horizontal
degree of freedom of the core locking device being locked.

[0041] As is noticeable from the above-described, a simple and easy-to-use
apparatus
has been developed, which apparatus eliminates a considerable number of prior
art
disadvantages. It should be noticed, however, that only a few of the most
advantageous embodiments of the invention were described above. Thus, it is
evident
10 that the invention is not limited to the above-mentioned embodiments, but
it can be
applied in many ways e.g. by combining the features of different. embodiments
within
the scope defined by enclosed claims.
