CA 02634805 2008-06-11
TENONER MACHINE WITH SETTING FUNCTION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is related to woodworking machinery, and
more particularly to a tenoner machine which can accurately adjust
the protruded height of the cutter for lathing a groove with
predetermined depth, can adjust the relative position between
guiding board and object, and can set the moving stroke of the
cutter.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The conventional woodworking tenoner machine, as shown in
Figs. 1 and 2, includes a machine base 1 with a driving motor 2
mounted at the bottom thereof, wherein the mandrel at the top of the
driving motor 2 is assembled with a cutter 2a for moving with a
mechanical board 2b, and through a guiding pillar 2c on the
mechanical board 2b moving along the undulated edge of a guiding
board 3, the cutter 2a can be guided to lathe the groove on the
bottom of the object a, which is erected on the guiding board 3.
Moreover, a guiding shaft 4 with undulated edge is mounted in front
of the machine base 1 for rejecting to a guiding wheel at the rear end
of a moving shaft 5, which moves laterally. The middle portion of
the moving shaft 5 penetrates through a vertical front wall of a
moving cover 5a. Two parallel bolts 6 penetrate through the front
and the rear walls of the moving cover 5a and a sliding block 7, and
the rear ends of the bolts 6 are further locked with the mechanical
I

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
board 2b. The bottom portion of the sliding block 7 is also
penetrated by two sliding shafts 8, which are located in front of the
machine base 1 in a lateral direction. The rear end of the moving
cover 5a is locked with the mechanical board 2b. Therefore, when
moving forward and backward the moving cover 5a, the mechanical
board 2b can be pushed forward and backward, and the driving
motor 2 can move with the mechanical board 2b and also the cutter
2a on the top of the driving motor 2 can be synchronously moved.
Furthermore, when pulling forward the moving cover 5a and the
moving shaft 5, the guiding wheel at the rear end of the moving shaft
5 can come off the undulated edge of the guiding shaft 4, so that the
moving cover 5a can have a lateral movement for repositioning,
thereby the cutter 2a can move back for lathing next object.
When operation, since the object a might lath the grooves with
different depths, the protruded height of the cutter 2a from the
guiding board 3 should be varied. Further, because the cutter 2a is
directly fixed on the driving motor 2, the difference should be
achieved by adjusting the position of the driving motor 2. However,
since the conventional tenoner machine does not have any indication
for the user to recognize the adjusting distance of the cutter 2a, it is
difficult to ensure that the adjusted distance is identical to the
predetermined groove depth.
Furthermore, the object a is installed on the machine base 1 and
the guiding board 3 has to move to approach the bottom portion of
the object a for forming the groove, but the conventional
2

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
woodworking tenoner machine does not provide any ruler or
indication as movement reference.
Besides, the width of groove of each object a might also be
different, so that the forward and backward moving stroke of the
cutter 2a might also be varied. However, the conventional
woodworking machinery does not provide any installation for
controlling the moving forward and backward distance of the cutter
2a.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Therefore, the object of the present invention is to provide a
tenoner machine with setting function to solve the problems
mentioned above, wherein through providing a cutter measuring unit
mounted at the upper portion of the machine base to measure the
protruded height of the cutter from the guiding board, and the
upward and downward movements of the motor can be adjusted
according thereto, so that the groove, lathed by the cutter, at the
bottom of the erected object can have an accurate and desired depth.
Moreover, the present invention also provides a position measuring
unit mounted on the left side and the right side mechanical walls of
the machine base which can adjust the relative position between the
guiding board and the object and further set the moving stroke of the
cutter, so that the width of the groove can be precisely controlled.
For achieving the object described above, the present invention
provides a tenoner machine with setting function including a
machine base having a guiding board mounted at the top thereof,
3

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
and a motor with a cutter mounted at the top thereof. The cutter
moves along indentation on the guiding board so as to lathe the
groove on the object, which is located on the guiding board. A
cutter measuring unit is mounted at the top of the machine base and
includes a through shaft with a pressing board located at the bottom
thereof and a flat board mounted at the top thereof, and the flat board
is directed toward a scale so as to measure the protruded height of
the cutter from the guiding board. Moreover, a position measuring
unit is located on a pair of mechanical walls at the left and the right
sides of the machine base including a movable block connected to
the guiding board, and a screw shaft locked to the movable block
and penetrating another block, wherein through adjusting two
adjusting nuts on the screw shaft, the screw shaft can be pulled to
drive the movable block to move, so as to move the guiding board to
approach the object, and the needle on the movable block which
directs to the scale on the mechanical wall, can disclose the exact
moving numbers. Furthermore, on the machine base, a guiding
device is mounted which can have forward and backward
movements for driving the motor to move along the guiding board,
so that the cutter at the top of the motor can lathe the groove on the
object, wherein the guiding device has a cutter feed/retract setting
unit including a guiding shaft, which penetrates a vernier seat, and
on the top of the vernier seat, a needle is directed to a scale on the
guiding device. The front and back ends of the guiding shaft are
respectively sleeved by a sliding sleeve, and through adjusting the
4

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
two sliding sleeves, the moving forward and backward distance of
the motor can be controlled, and also, the needle points out the
moving scale.
Thereby, through the cutter measuring unit measuring the
position of the cutter, the operator can realize the position of the
power source, the motor, so as to set the protruded height of the
cutter from the guiding board for lathing the groove with accurate
depth. Moreover, through the position measuring unit at the
outsides of two mechanical walls, the relative position between the
guiding board and the object can be adjusted. Furthermore,
through the stroke setting unit, the moving forward and backward
stroke of the motor can be set and also indicated by the needle on the
scale, so that the width of the groove can be precisely controlled.
Therefore, the present invention is advantageous that:
1. The machine base has cutter measuring unit mounted thereon
for directly measuring the protruded height of the cutter from the
guiding board, so that an accurate data reference can be provided for
adjusting the position of the motor, and thus, the cutter can lathe the
groove with precise depth.
2. Through adjusting two adjusting nuts on the screw shaft in the
position measuring unit, the screw shaft can be pulled to drive the
movable block to move, so as to move the guiding board to approach
the cutter and thus adjusting the relative position between the
guiding board and the object, and through the needle on the movable
block directing to the scale on the mechanical wall, the exact
5

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
moving distance can be realized.
3. The cutter feed/retract setting unit mounted at one side of the
guiding device can set the forward and backward moving stroke of
the cutter, so that the width of the lathed groove can be controlled.

A through shaft 38 penetrates the middle portion of the sliding block
31 and penetrates through and connects to an elastic element 39
(such as spring), which is retractable in the longitudinal direction,
and the rear end of the through shaft 38 is inserted into a pit in front
of the mechanical board 12. The front end of the elastic element 39
is rejected to the sliding block 31, and the rear end is rejected to the
mechanical board 12. A pull stick 35 is pivotally connected to the
central portion of the fixing board 34. A pulley 351 is mounted at
the rear end of the pull stick 35 for rejecting to the slant 32 of the
sliding block 31, and the front end of the pull stick 35 is provided for
being held and pulled down by the user. A moving shaft 36 which
is resilient in a longitudinal direction is mounted at the lower portion
of the fixing board 34, and the rear end of the moving shaft 36 is
pivotally connected with a guiding wheel 361, which can have
leftward and rightward movements along the undulated guiding
track 115 of the machine base 10. When pulling down the pull
stick 35, the pulley 351 upwardly rolls along the slant 32 of the
sliding block 31 for moving the moving cover 33 forward, so as to
drive the mechanical board 12 and the cutter 135 to move forward
and retract the cutter 135. When pulling up the pull stick 35, the
mechanical board 12 will be driven to move backward so as to feed
the cutter 135. And, through the elastic rejection of the elastic
element 39, the moving shaft 36 can be pulled forward, so that the

9

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
the cutter 135 can come off the indentations 111 of the guiding
board 11 and reposition again for cutting next object a.
A position measuring unit 40, wherein the position measuring
unit 40 is located on a pair of mechanical walls 116 at the left and
the right sides of the machine base 10. A movable block 44 is
mounted at the outside of each mechanical wall 116, and the inner
side of the block 44 penetrates the mechanical wall 116 for
connecting to the guiding board 11 so that the block 44 can move
with the guiding board 11. A lug 117 is mounted at the front end of
the mechanical wall 116. A screw shaft 41 is fixed to the block 44
through the rear end thereof, and the front end is penetrates through
the lug 117. An adjusting nut 42 is respectively screwed at the
front and the rear sides of the lug 117. A needle 43 is located at the
top of the block 44 for indicating a lateral scale 113b on the
mechanical wall 116.
A cutter feed/retract setting unit 50, wherein the setting unit 50 is
assembled at the outside of the moving cover 33 and includes a
leftward and rightward movable guiding shaft 51. Two ends of the
guiding shaft 51 are respectively locked on the moving cover 33
through a ring. The guiding shaft 51 is sleeved by two sliding
sleeves 52, and a vernier seat 53 is sleeved on the guiding shaft 52
between two sliding sleeves 52. The vernier seat 53 is a block
whose lower end is locked on the sliding block 31. Besides,
another scale 331 is mounted at the outside of the moving cover 33,
and a needle 54 at the top of the vernier seat 53 is directed to the

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
scale 331.
Through the structure described above, when operation the
object a is fixed on the machine base 10, the pressing board 24 under
the cutter measuring unit 20 can contact with the cutter 135 for
measuring the protruded height of the cutter 135 from the guiding
board 11, and the flat board 23 on the through shaft 22 can indicate
the scale 113a on the wall board 112, so that the operator can
directly see the data on the scale. Then, through adjusting the
screw shaft 136 of the adjusting component 131, the position of the
motor 132 can be adjusted so as to raise the cutter 135, and then,
through turning the quick release 134, the position can be held.
Therefore, the cutter 135 can rise a preset height from the guiding
board 11, so as to lathe a precise groove at the bottom of the object a.
Moreover, the adjusting nuts 42 at the front and the rear ends of
the screw shaft 41 in the position measuring unit 40 can be adjusted
to move forward or backward, so that the blocks 44 at the left and
the right sides of the machine base 10 can be moved to drive the
guiding board 11 to approach the object a. Therefore, the relative
position between the guiding board 11 and object a can be adjusted
for facilitating the lathing by the cutter 135. And, the vernier
needle 43 at the top of the block 44 can indicate the scale 113b at the
outside of the mechanical wall 116 for obtaining numbers. In
addition, through adjusting the two adjusting nuts 42 at the opposite
mechanical wall 116, the level of the guiding board 11 can be
adjusted.
11

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
Furthermore, through adjusting the position of the two sliding
sleeves 52 sleeved on the screw shaft 41 in the cutter feed/retract
setting unit 50, the forward and backward moving distance of the
moving cover 33 on the guiding device 30 can be controlled. Since
the movement stroke of the guiding shaft 51 on the mechanical
board 12 is restricted by two sliding sleeves 52, the mechanical
board 12 is connected with the moving cover 33 and the motor seat
13 is fixed at the bottom of the mechanical board 12, when pulling
down the pull stick 35, the mechanical board 12 can move
synchronously, wherein the guiding pillar 121 at the top of the
mechanical board 12 can move along the indentations of the guiding
board 11 so as to guide the cutter 135 on the motor 132 to move, and
the two sliding sleeves 52 can accurately restrict the stroke of the
cutter 135. Besides, through the needle 54 at the top of the vernier
seat 53 indicating the scale 331, the operator can actually see the
moving distance. After releasing the pull stick 35, the mechanical
board 12 can return to the original position through the elastic
element 39 on the through shaft 38.
In the aforesaid, as compared with conventional woodworking
tenoner machine, the present invention is advantageous that:
1. The wall board 112 of the machine base 10 has, mounted
thereon, the cutter measuring unit 20 with the pressing board 24 at
the bottom thereof contacting with the cutter 135 and the flat board
23 at the top thereof indicating the scale 113a, so that the protruded
height of the cutter can be accurately measured, and thus, the
12

CA 02634805 2008-06-11
position of the motor 132 beneath the cutter 135 can be adjusted so
as to accurately lathe the groove depth of the object a.
2. The pair of mechanical walls 116 at the left and the right sides
of the machine base 10 has, mounted thereon, the position
measuring unit 40 with two adjusting nuts 42 on the screw shaft 41,
and through manually adjusting the nuts, the screw shaft 41 can be
pulled to drive the movable block 44 to move, so that the relative
position of the guiding board 11 and the object a can be adjusted for
facilitating the lathing. Besides, through the needle 43 on the block
44 indicating the scale 113b on the mechanical wall 116, the exact
moving distance can be realized, so that it is easy to adjust the level
of the guiding board 11 through adjusting the blocks 44 at two sides.
3. The cutter feed/retract setting unit 50 mounted at one side of
the guiding device 30 can set and control the forward and backward
moving stroke of the motor 132 under the cutter 135, so that the
cutter 135 can lathe a precise width of the groove needed by the
object a. Further, the needle 54 can indicate the scale 331 for the
operator.
It is to be understood, however, that even though numerous
characteristics and advantages of the present invention have been set
forth in the foregoing description, together with details of the
structure and function of the invention, the disclosure is illustrative
only, and changes may be made in detail, especially in matters of
