THE BABY ELEVATOR CHAIR

It is widely known that an `up and down' movement calms fussy babies. This
invention
takes the form of a chair, connected to a pole, which moves in an upward and
downward
motion, to soothe fussy and/or crying babies.

Claims
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege
is claimed
are defined as follows:
1- An infant soothing chair comprising a pole, a baby seat connected to the
pole by a
mechanical system that allows it to go in an upward and downward motion, and a
base to which the pole is affixed.
2- An infant soothing chair as defined in claim 1, in which the baby seat
reclines,
includes a removable newborn headrest and a shoulder and waist harness.
3- An infant soothing chair as defined in claim 2, in which the baby seat is
either
connected to the side of the pole or at the top of the pole.
4- An infant soothing chair as defined in claim 3, in which it is either the
baby seat
that glides up and down along the side of the pole, or the pole itself that
retracts
and extends to move the seat that sits atop it in an up and down motion.

Specification
This invention relates to an infant product that soothes babies.
It is common for parents to do "squats" with their babies in their arms to
soothe them.
This is actually loosely known among mothers as "doing the elevator" to
appease baby.
This can be quite tiring for mothers/caregivers and there is no product
currently in the
market that can mechanically reproduce this motion. Although there exists
swings in the
marketplace that move from side to side or front to back, there are currently
no infant
products in the market that offer an up and down movement to soothe baby.
By mechanically reproducing the up and down motion, this invention will allow
mothers/caregivers to soothe their baby without as much effort as was put into
creating
this motion manually by bending and extending their legs (which can also be
positioned
as "doing squats"). The Baby Elevator Chair is similar to baby swings out in
the
marketplace which are designed to mechanically reproduce the motion of parents
rocking
their babies to calm them or help them to sleep. Our product mechanically
reproduces the
motion of parents moving their babies up and down in order to soothe them,
thus
eliminating the manual labour required.
The Baby Elevator Chair is comprised of a seat that will either (1) be
connected to the
side of a pole (the seat moves up and down the side of the pole) or (2)
positioned at the
top of a pole (the retractable pole moves up and down). Both methods allow the
seat to go
up and down in a rhythmic, regular way. The final mechanism chosen in the
development
of the Baby Elevator Chair to make the seat go up and down will be determined
by
feasibility and cost.
With Method (1), the seat in which baby will be seated is connected to the
side of a pole,
approximately 1 foot down from the top of the pole. The height of the pole is
still to be
determined but will be between 3-4 feet tall. A mechanism on the pole allows
the seat to
glide up and down the side of the pole (the range of the up and down motion
will take
place over a foot to 3 feet approximately. This is still to be determined).
With Method (2), the seat in which the baby will be seated sits on top of a
pole. The
height of the pole is still to be determined but will be between approx 2-3
feet tall. The
pole itself retracts downward by 1- 3 feet approximately (range of
retraction/extension is
still to be determined), and then comes back up.
The seat itself is cushioned for baby's comfort and includes a shoulder and
waist harness
to make sure baby is securely fastened and cannot fall out. The seat comes
with a
removable "newborn" head rest option. The seat can also recline.
Optional features may be included on the Baby Elevator Chair such as the
option to play
music/heartbeat/nature sounds as baby glides up and down. The base of the Baby
Elevator Chair will need to be wide and sturdy, and some weight may need to be
added to
the other side of the pole if the mechanism in Method (1) (seat on side of the
pole) is

used, in order the counter-balance the baby's weight and to ensure the Baby
Elevator
Chair does not topple over. This will be determined at the research and
development
stage of production. Finally, the Baby Elevator Chair will be battery-
operated; while a
plug-in option will also be explored.
