CA 02724747 2010-11-17
Folding box blank
The invention relates to a folding box blank having a
plurality of base portions and at least four side wall
portions hinged thereon.
Many folding boxes are intended to accommodate relatively
large volumes, but must enclose either only small volumes. or
no volume when they are transported.
In addition, the folding boxes should be simple to assemble
and stable when standing.
Moreover, folding boxes of this kind can also have inner
bags which are able to protect the contents from moisture,
for example.
It is an object of the invention to create a folding box
blank which can be assembled to form a folding box which can
have an at least partly flattened-out state and a completely
assembled state.
This object is achieved in that in each case two base
portions are arranged symmetrically with respect to one
another.
This makes it possible to provide a flattened-out pack.
It is also very advantageous when the line of symmetry is in
the form of a base folding line.
It is, however, likewise very advantageous, when the side
wall portions are arranged symmetrically with respect to the
base folding line.
This ensures a symmetrical structure of the folding box.
1

CA 02724747 2010-11-17
A further very advantageous configuration of the invention
is also provided when connecting portions are hinged on the
outer side wall portions.
Using these connecting portions, the blank can be connected
to the pack. It is conceivable here for the connection to be
in the form of a fin seam.
It is likewise very advantageous, according to the
invention, when a plurality of base portions are provided in
the longitudinal direction of the base folding line.
As a result, a base which is closed in the assembled state
of the pack can be configured.
A further very advantageous development of the invention is
also provided when the outer base portions have a contour
which is in the form of a portion of a circle or in the form
of a gusset and is directed toward the inner base portions.
Here, it is extremely advantageous, when the greatest
dimension of the contour in the form of a portion of a
circle or in the form of a gusset is arranged in the
direction of the side wall portions.
A configuration of this kind ensures that when putting up a
flattened-out pack, these base portions are assembled in
each case to form a planar base part.
It has further 'proved to be extremely advantageous when
there is provision in the outer base portions of folding
lines which extend from the point at which the contour in
the form of a portion of a circle or in the form of a gusset
meets the base folding line to the outer edges of the outer
side wall portions.
2

CA 02724747 2010-11-17
This configuration ensures even better erecting of the base
portions. The base is additionally stiffened.
A further very advantageous configuration is provided when
portions in the form of hooks are provided in the region of
the point at which the contours in the form of a portion of
a circle or in the form of a gusset meet the base folding
line.
These portions in the form of hooks interlock and thus
prevent the base from unintentionally folding back. The
erected base is very stable as a result.
It is likewise very advantageous when portions in the form
of hooks are provided at the outer border of the outer base
portions in the region of the base folding line.
These outer portions in the form of hooks are also able to
interlock and thus prevent the base from folding back.
According to the invention, it has also proven to be very
advantageous when there is provision of a central base
portion, which has an increasing longitudinal extent
starting from the adjacent side wall portions.
It is very advantageous here when the length of the base
portion is greater in the region of the base folding line
than in the region of-the side wall portions.
It is likewise very advantageous when a constriction in the
contour of the central base portion is provided in the
region of the base folding line.
In a configuration of this kind of the central base portion,
the outer base portions are guided during erecting and
brought into the envisioned planar position. The base is
closed.

CA 02724747 2010-11-17
A further very advantageous configuration of the invention
is also provided when barbs and/or holders for barbs are
provided on the base portions in the region of the base
folding line.
The barbs and the holders connect the base portions together
and prevent folding back.
For a folding box produced from a blank as claimed in one of
the preceding claims, it has proved to be very advantageous
when, during the assembling of a blank which has been pre-
folded in the form of a W, the base portions engage in one
another and together form an at least approximately planar
base, and in the process engage firmly in one another.
This produces a safely standing and stable pack with a large
volume.
The invention is illustrated in the following text on the
basis of a plurality of exemplary embodiments.
In the figures:
figure 1 shows a blank having a plurality of base
portions and inwardly directed catching
means,
figure 2 shows a further blank having differently
configured base portions having inwardly
directed catching means,
figure 3 shows a third blank having outwardly directed
catching means.
In figure 1, a blank having two central base portions 2 and
3 is designated 1. The base portions 2 and 3 are separated
from one another by a folding line 4. Incisions 5 and. 6 in
the form of hooks are provided close to the folding line 4

in the central base portions 2 and 3. Starting from the
folding line 4, the width of the central base portions 2 and
3 increases, and so a protrusion 7 is formed. Proceeding
from this protrusion 7, the central portions 2 and 3 become
narrower again in order to assume the width of the adjacent
side wall portions 10 and 11, which are hinged on the
central base portions 2 and 3 via a respective folding line
12 and 13.
Further side wall portions 14, 15, 16, and 17 are hinged, by
way of folding lines 18, 19, 20 and 21, laterally to the
side wall portions 10 and 11, in each case on both sides.
Connecting portions 22 and 23 are provided on the sides of
the side wall portions 14, 15, 16 and 17 remote from the
side wall portions 10 and 11. These connecting portions are
adhesively bonded to the side wall portions 16 and 17. It is
also conceivable for there to be provision of four
connecting portions 22 and 24 and also 23 and 25, which can
be connected to a fin in each case during the assembling of
the pack. The connecting portions 22, 23, 24 and 25 are
hinged on the side wall portions 14, 15, 16 and 17 via
folding lines 26.
Further base portions 30, 31, 32 and 33 are hinged on the
side wall portions 14, 15, 16 and 17 via folding lines 34,
35, 36 and 37 and are separated from one another by folding
lines 38 and 39 lying in extension of the folding line 4.
The base portions 30, 31, 32 and 33 are provided in the
region of the inner end of the folding lines 38 and 39 with
incisions 40 and 41, in the form of hooks, which are able,
during the erecting of the blank to form a pack, to engage
in the incisions 5 and 6 in the form of hooks in the central
base portions 2 and 3 and to interlock therewith.
5

CA 02724747 2010-11-17
Reinforcing portions 43 are hinged on the base portions 30,
31, 32 and 33 via folding lines 42. The folding lines 42
extend in each case from the intersections of the folding
lines 38 and 39 with the incisions 40 and 41 in the form of
hooks to the folding lines 26. During the erecting of a pack
formed from the blank 1, the reinforcing portions 43 make it
easier to erect and additionally stiffen the base formed.
When flattening out the blank 1, the base portions 2, 3, 30,
31, 32 and 33 are folded inward between the side wall
portions 10, 11, 14, 15, 16 and 17, and so, as seen from the
side, a configuration in the form of a W results.
A film bag formed in a manner corresponding to the
configuration in the form of a W can be inserted into this
blank and can comprise, for example, moisture-sensitive
material that adds volume. In addition to its function as a
moisture barrier, the film bag can also act as a grease
barrier, and so grease contained in the bag cannot pass into
the cardboard material of the blank 1.
The film bag can in this case firstly be adhesively bonded
on the side wall portions 10, 11, 14, 15, 16 and/or 17 with
spots or lines of adhesive and/or be incorporated by
adhesive bonding into the seams consisting of the connecting
portions 22, 23, 24 and 25.
The pack flattened out in this way can thus be transported
easily and in a space-saving manner.
If the pack is then intended to be assembled, the seams or
fin seams are pushed together. This reduces the folding in
of the base portions 2, 3, 30, 31, 32 and 33. The base
portions 30, 31, 32 and 33 are guided by the protrusions 7,
and so the barbs formed from the incision lines 5, 6, 40 and
41 are able to engage in one another. The individual base
portions 2, 3, 30, 31, 32 and 33 are matched in form to one
6

..
CA 02724747 2010-11-17
another such that the barbs engage precisely when the base
formed from the base portions 2, 3, 30, 31, 32 and 33 has
folded out flat.
The hooking-in of the barbs renders the base extremely
stable and steady.
Figure 2 shows a further configuration of the base portions,
in which the central base portions 202 and 203 have a
rounded configuration.
It is, however, also conceivable, as illustrated in figure
3, to provide, instead of the inwardly directed incisions 5,
6, 40 and 41 in the form of barbs, outwardly directed barbs
305 and 306, which are provided in recesses 307 and 308 in
the central base portions 302 and 303. In this exemplary
embodiment, the central base portions 302 and 303 have an
angular configuration and are at their widest in the region
of the folding line 4. The compulsory engagement of the
barbs 305 and 306 in the recesses 307 and 308 takes place in
this case with the pack folded out slightly. further than the
finished state.
It is also conceivable to provide further wall and base
portions and thus to create a pack that has more angles than
the examples illustrated. It is also conceivable here for
the pack to have only four side wall portions and base
portions, in which case an approximately rectangular pack
can be erected.
Cardboard, which is uncoated or has a coating on its inside
and/or outside, can be used for the blank 1. In addition, it
is conceivable for printing to be provided on the inside
and/or outside.
