CA 02847203 2015-09-11
Background:
In households and offices, people separate consumer waste from recyclables and
organics in
many different ways. The majority of households and offices sort in a central
area, which is
generally located close to the kitchen. Despite best intentions, it's often
difficult to effectively
sort in every room of the home and office. The result is that lots of
recyclable and organic
materials get discarded in single-stream waste bins that are typically found
in bedrooms,
offices, and bathrooms.
Some people sort materials by moving small bits and pieces of recyclables and
organics from
room to room, gradually finding their way to a central sorting area. Some pick
through their
waste bins on garbage day to salvage a few of the more obvious recyclables
before throwing
the remaining mixed material in the trash.
Others purchase several separate recycling bins for each room and line them up
next to their
waste bin or they buy entirely new bins that have integrated sorting
capabilities.
These solutions are inconvenient, inefficient, unattractive, or wasteful.
One existing product that adds some limited sorting functionality to existing
single-stream waste
bins are small mini-bins that hang over the top rim of a waste bin. The static
size and shape of
these bins however limit the volume of materials they can hold and the number
of separate
sorting streams that can be accommodated within any one bin.
Because of the limited options described above, smaller scale single-stream
waste bins
continue to persist in bedrooms, offices and bathrooms causing a large portion
of recyclable
and organic materials to be needlessly tossed in with the trash and lost to
the waste stream.
Other forms of prior art that attempt to Introduce an effective way to sort
several streams of

efficiency, adaptability, and convenience of BlNlNSTM waste bin divider kits.
Summary of Invention:
BIN-INSTm waste bin divider kits are highly adaptable tools that combine a
unique mounting and
receiving clip (fig,l) with a unique dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) for
the purpose of
converting a single-stream waste bin into a multi-stream sorting bin, allowing
users to sort any

combination or grouping of metal, paper, plastic, organics, or waste to suit
the specific
requirements of local sorting programs or user preferences.
With the top portion of a suitably sized bag folded over the dually adjustable
bag frame (fig.2),
and the dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) adjusted to suit the size of the
bag and shape of the
host waste bin, the dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) with said bag, Is
upwardly inserted into
the opening of the receiving side of the mounting and receiving clip (2).
The mounting and receiving clip (fig.1), and dually adjustable bag frame
(fig.2) with said bag, is
then mounted to a waste bin by pushing the opening of the mounting side (3) of
the mounting
an receiving clip (fig.1), over the top rim of a waste bin. The combined
tension and alignment
delivered through the design of the mounting and receiving clip (fig.1) allows
the dually
adjustable bag frame (fig.2) to be held In an open position parallel to the
top the a waste bin
using only a singular area of connection between the dually adjustable bag
frame (fig.2) and the
mounting and receiving clip (fig.1).
Users then attach and detach the mounting and receiving clip (fig.1) together
with the dually
adjustable bag frame (fig.2) from the waste bin as a single unit for easy and
efficient dumping of
contents into larger recycle/sorting bins.
The receiving side of the mounting and receiving clip (2) holds bags securely
in-place over the
dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) and In a position that does not obscure
the customizable
identification window (1) of the mounting and receiving clip (fig,1),
The top portion of the mounting side of the mounting and receiving clip
(fig.1) has a functional
void space (6) to accommodate waste bins that have rolled, elongated, or
structural top rims.
This functionally adaptive space allows the mounting and receiving clips to be
used with a
______ range-of-waste-bin-styles.
_________________________________________________________
Though, the preferred embodiment of the mounting and receiving clip will be
constructed using
bent clip metal, minor and obvious design modifications, using different
materials and
processes such as injection-mould or extrusion can be used to achieve the same
functional
design.

The dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) Is adjustable along the lengths of
both Its curved, flexible
side (4) as well as its straight, rigid side (5).
The dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) holds its circumference and shape
through simple
tension which is applied by four tension bands (7), which are used to join the
overlapping straps
(8,9) of the dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2). Each tension band (7) is
secured to the end of
one strap, wrapped around a second overlapping strap and secured again to the
first strap In a
way that allows the strap with the tension band attached to slide along the
length of the second
strap.
The dually adjustable bag frame's straight, rigid overlapping segments (8) and
curved, flexible
overlapping segments (9) are attached using two flexible elbow joints (10).
When assembled,
the bag frame forms a variably adjustable 'D' or bow-shape allowing one frame
to be configured
into many sized and shaped as Illustrated in (fig,2b).
By adjusting both sides of the dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) to
different positions and
lengths as illustrated in (fig. 2b), the static shape and size of each dually
adjustable bag frame
(fig.2) can be altered so as to fit within and follow portions of the wall
contour of round, oval,
square, or rectangular waste-bins of varied size as illustrated in (fig. 5).
Each dually adjustable bag frame (fig. 2) is able to securely hold various
sized bags In an open
position by simply folding the top portion of a bag's opening over the dually
adjustable bag
frame (fig.2) and adjusting the position of the overlapping straps (8, 9) to
match the
circumference of the bag in a shape that is suited to the host waste bin.
Because the dually adjustable bag frame (fig.2) Is a detachable from the
mounting and
receiving clip (fig.1), it can be mounted along either its curved or flexible
side (4) or it& straight
and-rtrid side (5)¨depending upon wtTE)ther the wdlITIlhe host was tfi-bin is
curved or straight.
For optimal support and efficient use of space within any given waste bin, the
straight and more
rigid side of the dually adjustable bag-frame (5) is designed to be mounted
against the inside of
square or rectangular-shaped bins (fig.4). For rounded or curved waste bins,
the more flexible
and curved portion of the dually adjustable bag frame (4) is intended to be
mounted against the
Inside wall of a rounded or curved waste bin (fig. 3).

CA 02847203 2015-09-11
The preferred embodiment of the dually adjustable bag frame (fig. 2) is lA
inches wide, which is
narrow enough to minimize skewing from parallel to the top of waste bin when
used with
conical-shaped waste bins, yet the bag frame is wide enough to support the
weight of itself
perpendicular to the wall of a waste bin when inserted into the receiving
portion of the mounting
and receiving clip (2).
The unique advantage of 8ININSTM waste bin divider kits is that they adjust to
fit within and
follow portions of the wall contour of most single stream waste bins
regardless of the size or
shape of the waste bin.
Bag frames claimed in prior art are not dually adjustable along both rigid and
flexible
overlapping segments and are designed for functions other than separating
several material
streams within one waste bin.
BIN.INSTM also allow users to repurpose/ reuse consumer bags of variable size
and shape,
such as freezer bags, bread bags, cereal bags, and produce bags, to contain
different streams
of material within a single waste bin.
BIN-INVA are primarily designed for use in bedrooms, offices and bathrooms,
where sorting
has been traditionally ineffective.
BIN-INS Tm are designed to increasing capture rates of valuable organics and
recyclabies and to
reducing waste that is send to landfills.
BIN-INSTm are highly adaptable and designed to suit changing consumer habits,
recycling
program requirements, and decors. As users change their consumption habits
they simply
adjust the size of each BINlNTM bag frame (fig.2) and bag to match. If users
want to buy a new
style of bin to match a new decor, BIN-INSA are easily moved from one bin to
the next.

manufacturing, shipping and storage.
Most importantly, BlNtNSTM expose users to the details of their consumer
waste, building
gradual awareness and ultimately empowering users with a better understanding
of their
consumer choices. Overtime, understanding becomes action making the concept of
"zero
waste" a real possibility.
