LOCK ASSEMBLY TO FORM A SURFACE AND METHOD OF
INSTALLATION
FIELD
The invention relates to the field of lock assemblies, and
more specifically to a lock assembly to form a surface and
method of installation thereof.
SUMMARY
In an aspect, the present disclosure provides a lock assembly
to form a surface comprising: a first interconnecting member
further comprised of: a first longitudinal recess; a first
longitudinal projection; and, a first cavity having an angle
8; a second interconnecting member to be secured to the first
interconnecting member, the second interconnecting member
further comprised of: a second longitudinal recess; a second
longitudinal projection; and, a second cavity having an angle
0; and, a fastener to secure the first interconnecting member
to the second interconnecting member, wherein the first
longitudinal recess mates with the second longitudinal
projection, and wherein assembling the first interconnecting
member to the second interconnecting member forms the surface.
In another aspect, the present disclosure provides a method
for assembling a board, the steps comprising: mating a first
longitudinal recess of a first interconnecting member with a
second longitudinal projection of a second interconnecting
member; and, securing a fastener within a cavity having an
angle 0 of the first interconnecting member and through to a
side wall of the second interconnecting member.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The following embodiments are merely illustrative and are not
intended to be limiting. It will be appreciated that various
modifications and/or alterations to the embodiments described
herein may be made without departing from the disclosure and
any modifications and/or alterations are within the scope of
the contemplated disclosure.
With reference to Figures 1A and 1B and according to an
embodiment of the present disclosure, a surface 10 is shown
in an assembled position, generally comprised of the first
interconnecting member 15 to the second interconnecting
member 20. A worker skilled in the art would appreciate that
the first and second interconnecting members 15, 20 are made
of timber, although other types of materials could be used
without departing from the scope of the disclosure. The first
interconnecting member 15 is further comprised of a first
projection 25 and a first recess 27, while the second
interconnecting member 20 is comprised of a second projection
30 and a second recess 32. As shown, the first recess 27 of
the first interconnecting member 15 has a corresponding shape
to mate with the second projection 30 of the second
interconnecting member 20. Although the projections 25, 30
and recesses 27, 32 are longitudinal, extending from a first
end to a second end of the first and second interconnecting
members 15, 20, a worker skilled in the art would appreciate
that other types of connection means are possible. Such
connections could include a shiplap connection, having
discreet indentations mating with corresponding discreet
recesses, or clamps and glue, etc., without departing from
the scope of the disclosure. A worker skilled in the art would

further appreciate that the projections and recesses are off-
centre relative to the side surfaces of the first and second
interconnecting members 15, 20, which will be further
described below. The first and second interconnecting members
15, 20 are further comprised of cavities (not shown) having
an optimal angle 6, to be further described below. Although
the present embodiment illustrates a first interconnecting
member 15 secured to a second interconnecting member 20, a
worker skilled in the art would appreciate that an n number
of interconnecting members could be utilized to create a
larger surface, provided that each n interconnecting member
is comprised of at least one projection and at least one
recess and at least one cavity having an angle 6, and that
each n-1 projection corresponds in shape so as to mate with
each n-1 recess.
With reference to Figures 2, 3A, 3B and 4 and according to an
embodiment of the present disclosure, the surface 10 is shown
in greater detail in its assembled position. Each of the
interconnecting members 15, 20 are shown further comprised of
cavities 40, positioned on an underside 41 of the
interconnecting members 15, 20. Each cavity 40 is angled at
an optimal angle 0 with respect to the underside 41 of the
interconnecting members 15, 20, the optimal angle e being
within a range of 12-17 degrees. As shown, each cavity 40
terminates in a second, smaller bore hole 45 that is
constructed to receive a fastener 50. Although the fastener
50 is shown as a screw, a worker skilled in the art would
appreciate that it could be a bolt, dowel, pin, bar, etc.
without departing from the scope of the disclosure. A worker
skilled in the art would further appreciate that the shorter
the surface 10, the fewer fasteners 50 are required. Indeed,
CA 3028420 2018-12-21

at least a single fastener 50 is required for a single cavity
40 for short surfaces 10; however, for longer surfaces 10,
additional fasteners 50 and corresponding cavities 40 are
required. To attach the first interconnecting member 15 to
the second interconnecting member 20, the recess 27 of the
first interconnecting member 15 is aligned to mate with the
projection 30 of the second interconnecting member 20. Once
mated, the first interconnecting member 15 is flush with the
second interconnecting member 20. Then, at least one fastener
50 is inserted into at least one cavity 40 of the first
interconnecting member 15, through the smaller bore hole 45
and through to the side wall (55 as shown in Figure 1B) of
the second interconnecting member 20. The fastener 50 is
specifically screwed into an area adjacent to and below the
second projection 30 of the second interconnecting member 20.
Indeed, the projections and recesses of the interconnecting
members 15, 20 are specifically off-center relative to the
side walls of the interconnecting members 15, 20, so that the
fasteners do not penetrate the projections and recesses. In
this particular embodiment, the projections 25, 30 and
recesses 27, 32 of the interconnecting members 15, 20 are
positioned above the center of the side walls. To create a
larger surface 10 comprised of n interconnecting members, a
similar installation procedure is required. Indeed, a number
n of interconnecting members would be aligned and mated with
n-1 projections and n-1 recesses, and at least an n-1 number
of fasteners would be inserted in at least n-1 corresponding
cavities to secure the n number of interconnecting members to
one another.
With reference to Figures 5 and 6 and according to an
embodiment of the present disclosure, a female
6
CA 3028420 2018-12-21

interconnecting connecting member 60 and male-male
interconnecting member 65 are shown, respectively. The female
interconnecting member 60 has a recess 70 positioned above
the center of the first side thereof. The other side of the
female interconnecting member 60 does not have any recess or
projection and is meant to terminate the surface
aesthetically. Meanwhile, the male-male interconnecting
member 65 has a first projection 75 on a first side thereof,
and a second projection 77 on a second side thereof. The
projections 75, 77 are positioned above the center of the
sides of the male-male interconnecting member 65, configured
to receive corresponding projection of other interconnecting
members (not shown). The male-male interconnecting member 65
is designed to be positioned in between adjacent
interconnecting members (not shown) to form the surface.
Many modifications of the embodiments described herein as
well as other embodiments may be evident to a person skilled
in the art having the benefit of the teachings presented in
the foregoing description and associated drawings. It is
understood that these modifications and additional
embodiments are captured within the scope of the contemplated
disclosure which is not to be limited to the specific
embodiment disclosed.
