1
MOUNTING FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATION DEVICES AND MOBILE
COMMUNICATION DEVICE WITH OPTICAL MAGNIFICATION FUNCTION
Prior Art
The invention starts from a mounting for mobile communication devices with an
optical sensor,
for example for smartphones, tablet PCs etc., which thus may also be used as
an electronic
magnifying glass, especially as an enlarging aid for assistance with reading
and writing, of the
kind according to the preamble of claim 1 and a mobile communication device
with optical
magnifying glass function according to the preamble of claim 1.
A known article is a mounting for a mobile telephone or other telephones
mounted above a work
surface. The mounting comprises a receiving part for the telephone, which is
pivotably fastened
to the upper end of a connector. The connector is pivotably connected at its
lower end with a
base. In this way the mobile telephone can be positioned at arbitrary angles
at a distance from the
work surface and also set aside in a horizontal position above the base (US
2009/0221333 Al).
The drawback of this mounting consists of the fact that the arrangement of the
connector for
connecting the mounting for the telephone with the base does not allow
movement of a reading
or writing specimen in the longitudinal direction to the mounting. Thus this
mounting is of only
limited suitability for mobile communication devices that are used as
electronic magnifying
glasses, especially as enlarging reading or writing aids. In addition, the
connector can only pivot
through an angle of 0 to about 120 in order to pivot the mounting with the
mobile telephone into
the horizontal direction. As a result, the mounting is relatively long in the
collapsed state.
Also known is a mounting for mobile communication devices comprising an
optical sensor used
as an electronic magnifying glass, especially as an enlarging reading and
writing aid. It consists
of a base positionable on a work surface, a receiving part for the
communication device located
above this, and a spacer for holding the mounting part and the base at a
variable distance and/or
angle with one another, wherein the spacer is pivotably connected with the
base and the receiving
part, in each case in the area of the outer edges of the base extending
parallel to one another and
the receiving part. The spacer consists of two supports, which are pivotably
articulated parallel to
each other in the area of the outer edges located one above the other, in each
case from the outer
side, with the end faces of the base place and the receiving part, in each
case extending at right
angles to these outer edges. The length of the supports is selected such that
in their vertical
position, the clear width between the base and the receiving part in the area
of the axes of

CA 03059488 2019-10-09
2
rotation is larger than the dimension of the receiving part extending at a
right angle from the axis
of rotation of the receiving part as a whole (DE 20 2015 003 430 U1).
The drawback of this mounting is that it only allows optimal coverage of the
entire reading
and/or writing area in the case of mobile communication devices that have a
camera arranged in
the center along the long sides of the device. In the case of communication
devices in which the
camera is located on the side, the image of the entire reading and/or writing
area to be enlarged
cannot be placed in the viewing area of the camera, since for functional
reasons one of the
supports is placed within the camera viewing area, so that lateral movement of
the image to be
enlarged into the camera viewing area is not possible as long as the image is
not located exactly
in the upper edge area of the side. Longitudinal movement of the side, as in
the aforementioned
publication US 2009/0221333 Al, is not possible. Thus a plurality of high-
performance devices
in the enlargement area cannot be used optimally with the aforementioned
mounting as an
enlarging writing and reading aid.
Therefore the invention is based on the task of altering the known mountings
for mobile
communication devices such that even when receiving mobile communication
devices with
lateral arrangement of the optical sensor they will allow optimal capture of
the entire reading
and/or writing area.
The invention and its advantages
The task is accomplished according to the characterizing features of claim 1
or 8 in that the base
and the receiving part for the spacer connecting the communication device in
an articulated
fashion are located on one side of the side opposite the optical sensor of the
communication
device. Starting from the side edge of the receiving part for the
communication device opposite
the optical sensor of the communication device and the side edge of the base
located below this
side edge, it extends in the direction of the center of the receiving part and
the base. The width of
the receiving part is selected such that with the communication device
inserted in place, its
optical sensor is exposed. The spacer is articulated pivotably with one each
of the parallel
longitudinal edges of the base and the receiving part. The length of the
spacer is selected such
that the clear distance between the hinges is somewhat larger than that of the
side edge of the
receiving part for the communication device connecting the front and rear
edges. As a result, it is
possible to swing the receiving part with the communication device inward
between the hinges of
the spacer, so that when the mounting is closed, the spacer and the receiving
part with the
communication device come to lie parallel one on top of the other and also
parallel over the base,

CA 03059488 2019-10-09
3
so that the entire arrangement in the collapsed position is very flat and
therefore easy to transport.
The terms front, back, and side edges are understood to be from the viewpoint
of the user of the
communication device.
The implementation of the lower main axis of rotation in the area of the lower
joint is
magnetically latched in the null position (not swung out) and, for example, at
a spacer deflection
of 40 or 80 from the vertical, are provided with a torque mounting that is
easily operated with a
pushbutton, for example a latching mechanism. In the range of about 90 from
the vertical, a
torque mounting integrated in the upper joint takes effect, allowing seamless
adjustment of the
vertical display position to align a remote viewing spotting scope on certain
specimens, for
example on a blackboard.
The operating position of the mounting according to the invention as a stand
with live image
enlargement is particularly advantageous:
¨ It is particularly advantageous at an object distance of about 18 cm that
it is possible to
write comfortably below the enlarging screen of the communication device;
¨ Optimized spatial relations: for example, it is possible to view objects
larger than A4
pages, since according to the invention, only a spacer arranged on one side is
present
according to the invention.
The operating position of the mounting according to the invention as a screen
reader with a
vertical display is particularly advantageous:
¨ The increased object distance results in enlarged object areas;
¨ Optimized spatial relations: for example, it is possible to view objects
larger than A4
pages, since according to the invention, only a spacer arranged on one side is
present
according to the invention;
¨ Some visual impairments require getting very close to the image on the
display; this is
ergonomically possible, especially for children and students, only in the case
of a vertical
screen.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the spacer part
consists of a dual
support formed of two individual supports, with spacing in the direction of
the width of the base
and/or the receiving part and connected by mountings located at their free
ends. In this way the
weight of the mounting is reduced. To increase the stability of the dual
supports, the two supports
can additionally be connected together via a flat lattice or a thin plate.

CA 03059488 2019-10-09
4
The operating position of the mounting according to the invention as a screen
reading device
with vertical display and remote viewing spotting scope as a blackboard
viewing device is
especially advantageous:
¨ Optical zoom of the remote viewing spotting scope offers the possibility
of also using this
in the case of remote objects such as blackboards or projection screen
presentations in
enlarged view and/or possibly contrasting colors;
¨ Optical zoom of the remote viewing spotting scope offers the possibility
of also using
character recognition software even in the case of remote objects such as
blackboards or
projection screen presentations;
¨ The use of the camera at a great height relative to the mounting surface
offers the
possibility of following the events in an enlarged view on the blackboard or
the
presentation over the shoulders" of the students sitting farther away.
An additional advantageous use of the mounting according to the invention
consists of its use as
an electronic working appliance, i.e., as a lectern.
Another advantageous use of the mounting according to the invention consists
of its use as a
mobile electronic vision aid.
The use of the camera integrated in the communication device without an
additional accessory
magnifying glass offers the possibility of using the depth of field of 5 cm to
infinity and thus a
usable mobility never before achieved with enlarging visual aids with screen
sizes of greater than
12 inches, by removal of the communication device from the protecting and
retaining cover
according to the invention.
The transport position of the mounting according to the invention has also
proven particularly
advantageous:
Practically unlimited mobility of the user is achieved in that
¨ The retaining device can be collapsed to a total depth of 24 mm;
¨ The communication device technology is protected extensively and on both
sides, for
example by means of a conventional protection and retaining cover.
Further advantages and advantageous embodiments of the invention can be taken
from the
description, claims and drawings that follow.

Description of the embodiments
The perspective view shown in Fig. 1 shows a side view from the back at a
mounting according
to the invention with a mobile communication device in the working situation
of an electronic
reading magnifier. As is recognizable from Fig. 1, the mounting according to
the invention for
the communication device consists of a base 1, a spacer 2 located pivotably on
its rear,
longitudinal edge and a receiving part 3 likewise connected with the other end
of the spacer 2 for
the mobile communication device, which in the present example is a tablet PC 4
with a camera
lens 5 located in the right lower from the user's view. Said lens is in line
with the placement area
of the mounting, for example a tabletop on which the object to be seen in
enlarged view, for
example a newspaper, may be placed.
The receiving part 3, which is equipped with means known in and of themselves
for removably
receiving and retaining different communication devices, is connected
pivotably at its front edge
with the spacer 2. The special feature of the combination of these three main
parts according to
the invention consists of the fact that the spacer 2 connects the base 1 with
the receiving part 3

CA 03059488 2019-10-09
6
asymmetrically, thus only on one side, i.e., the spacer 2 extends from one of
the side edges of
base 1 and receiving part 3, in the present example from the left side as seen
by the user, in the
direction of the center of the base 1. The receiving part 3 in the present
example has
approximately the same width as the spacer 2, so that the tablet PC 4 projects
beyond the
receiving part 3 by more than half of its width. As a result, the camera lens
5, located close to the
right edge of the tablet PC 4, is free to capture the image.
For pivotable connection of the spacer 2 with the base 1, the latter on its
rear long edge facing the
viewer in Fig. 1, has a lower hinge mounting 6. In the pivot axis of the lower
hinge mounting 6,
on the face side, a lower latch operating button 7 is placed (Fig. 2). For
pivotable connection of
the spacer 2 with the receiving part 3, the latter has an upper hinge mounting
8 on its front
longitudinal edge facing away from the user. An upper latch operating button 9
is located in the
pivot axis of the upper hinge mounting 8 on the face side (Fig. 2).
In the present example, the spacer 2 consists of 2 supports 10 at a distance
form one another in
the width direction of the base 1, which are connected with one another over a
stabilization plate
11 for stabilization and vibration damping of the entire construction. At
their lower ends, each of
the supports 10 has a lower bearing bushing 12 with which they are pivotably
connected in the
lower pivot axis with the lower hinge mountings 6. The angular positions of
the supports 10
relative to the bases 1 are done using the latch operating button 7 in the
area of the lower pivot
axis. The opposite ends of the supports 10 are each provided with a lower
bearing bushing 13,
and these are rotatably connected with the upper hinge mounting 8 of the
receiving part 3. A
latch operable using the latch operating button 9 located in the upper pivot
axis allows the
locking of various deflections of the receiving part 3 and thus of the tablet
PC 4.
A second locking combination of the receiving part 3 to the horizontal allows
continuous
alignment of the display 14 of the tablet PC 4 in the range of 85 to 950 to
the horizontal through
the effect of a torque mounting 15 installed in the upper hinge mounting 8
(Fig. 6).
In the present example, a conventional tablet PC protecting and retaining
cover is fastened to the
receiving part 3, serving for the permanent but nevertheless removable and
protective
accommodation of the tablet PC 4.
Fig. 2 shows a front view of the mounting according to the invention with a
tablet PC 4 from the
user's viewpoint. From this view, two additional magnets 17 in each support 10
are recognizable,

CA 03059488 2019-10-09
7
thus a total of four, which in the collapsed resting position secure the
retention of the support 10
on the base!.
Fig. 3 shows the mounting with the tablet PC 4 in the collapsed state as one
of the possible
lectern positions for use as a flat electronic appliance.
Fig. 4 shows the mounting according to the invention in the collapsed state as
its transport
position. Here the tablet PC 4 is covered for protection by the conventional
magnetically retained
tablet PC protection and retaining cover 16.
Fig. 5 shows the mounting according to the invention with the tablet PC 4 in a
working position
as a screen reader device with vertically standing display surface 14. Here,
the supports 10 are in
a lock-in position of for example 80 with the vertical, and the lock-in
position of the receiving
part with tablet PC 4 and tablet PC protection and retaining cover is, for
example, 90 with the
vertical. For this purpose it is necessary to align the camera view field in
the direction of the
erection area of the mounting, for example a tabletop, on which the object to
be viewed in
enlargement, for example a newspaper, can be positioned. Therefore a
deflection mirror 18 is
positioned as an optical attachment on the housing of the tablet PC 4 in front
of the camera lens 5
of the tablet PC 4, which is located on the back thereof in a bottom right-
hand corner seen from
the user's viewpoint. Reflection is eliminated by appropriate configuration of
the viewing
software. At the beginning of use and the end of use respectively, the
deflection mirror 18 can be
easily clicked on or removed using magnetic mounting and magnetic centering.
Fig. 6 shows the mounting with tablet PC 4 in the same working position as the
screen reading
device with the vertically positioned display surface 14 as in Fig. 5. Here,
however, the tablet is
rotated through 180 either in the or with the tablet PC protecting and
retaining cover 18 in such
a manner that the camera lens 5 of the tablet PC 4 is located at the upper
left corner seen from the
user's viewpoint. It is centered on the camera lens 5 by a combination of
magnets, not shown
here in detail, within the spotting scope mounting 19 and the tablet PC
protection and retaining
cover 16. In the center of the spotting scope mounting 19, a spotting scope 20
with, for example,
a factor of 8 or 10 is placed as an enlarging telescope, so that it is
likewise centered on the
camera lens 5. In this case, this working position for mounting the tablet PC4
is does not serve
for enlarging a reading or writing specimen located on the work surface, but
for raising and
showing on the display 14 an object or image at a greater distance from the
work surface, for
example a panel or projected image.

CA 03059488 2019-10-09
8
In the locking position of 90 with the vertical of the receiving part 3 and
thus the display 14 of
the tablet PC 4, the camera lens 5 is positioned horizontally. This locking
position allows an
additional continuous alignment of the display 14 and thus of the camera lens
5 deviating by, for
example, plus or minus 5 in each case from the vertical of the display 14 or
the horizontal of the
camera lens. In this case, the effect of the torque mounting 15 becomes
effective as a possibility
for continuous adjustment.
At the beginning or end of use, the spotting scope holder 19 along with the
spotting scope 20 can
be easily clicked into place or removed by light clamping and magnetic
centering.
All features presented here are essential for the invention, individually or
in any arbitrary
combination with one another.
