A PROFILE MEMBER AND A BUILDING COMPRISING THEREOF
Technical Field
The present invention is related to the profile members and buildings
comprising such
profiles members.
Prior Art
In the field of construction, different materials and structures are used for
constructing a
building. For example in the conventional applications, posts, beams, base and
ceiling of
the buildings are made from concrete and steel. Walls of the buildings are
made from
bricks. Although such structures are long lasting, constructing them requires
long times
and their cost is high.
In the art, there are also modular structures which are used for constructing
buildings. In
those applications, prefabricated components are attached to each other.
Although
constructing a building using those prefabricated components requires less
time, buildings
constructed by them are not as strong as the conventional ones. Moreover, in
the known
art, it is not possible to construct a thermally insulated building using the
prefabricated
components.
In the art, there are some prefabricated components that provide heat
insulation. One
example for those components is sandwich panels. In the sandwich panels, an
insulating
material is placed between two sheets. Although such structures provide heat
insulation,
their mechanical strength is relatively low. Therefore, it is not possible to
construct a
building using only those components. In order to construct a reliable
building, especially
posts and beams should have been made from strong materials. However, such
strong
materials, such as metal profiles, create a heat bridge between the outer
environment and
inside of the building. Therefore, there is a need for heat insulating and
strong profile
members to be used posts and beams.

Brief Description of the Invention
With the present invention, a profile member, suitable to be used in buildings
is provided.
Said profile member comprises, at least one first member comprising a hollow
body
having at least one opening to access inside the body; at least one second
member
comprising a body wherein at least one part of the body of the second member
is located
inside the first member and at least another part of the body of the second
member is
located outside the first member; at least one insulating material having heat
insulating
property, provided inside the first member, wherein at least one part of the
insulating
material is located between the hollow body of the first member and body of
the second
member to prevent a heat bridge forming between the first body and second
body.
Since profile member of the present invention comprises an insulating
material, located
between the first member and second member, forming a heat bridge between said
first
member and second member is prevented. Moreover, since at least one part of
the
second member is located inside the first member, mechanical strength of the
profile
member is improved. Accordingly, a profile member enabling high mechanical
strength
and heat insulation at the same time is provided.
Object of the Invention
The main object of the invention is to provide a profile member suitable to be
used in
building constructions.
Another object of the present application is to provide a strong profile
member with heat
insulating capability.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a building comprising
the profile
member.

Detailed Description of the Invention
According to the needs of the users, there are several structures made from
different
materials in the construction filed. If a long lasting building is required,
stronger structures
are used. However, constructing such buildings require high time. On the other
hand, if a
faster constructed building is required, prefabricated components are used.
Although
buildings are constructed faster by using such prefabricated components, such
prefabricated components are unable to provide high mechanical strength and
heat
insulation at the same time. Therefore, according to the present application,
a profile
member suitable to be used in buildings and enabling high mechanical strength
and heat
insulation at the same time is provided.
Profile member (P) of the present invention, exemplary views of which is shown
in figures
1-10, comprises at least one first member (1) comprising a hollow body having
at least
one opening to access inside the body; at least one second member (2)
comprising a
body wherein at least one part of the body of the second member (2) is located
inside the
first member (1) and at least another part of the body of the second member
(2) is located
outside the first member (1); at least one insulating material (3) having heat
insulating
property, provided inside the first member (1), wherein at least one part of
the insulating
material (3) is located between the hollow body of the first member (1) and
body of the
second member (2) to prevent a heat bridge forming between the first body (1)
and
second body (2).
In an exemplary embodiment, said first member (1) is in the form of a
rectangular tube,
wherein at least one part of a wall is removed. Said second member (2) is also
in the form
of a rectangular tube wherein at least one parts of each of two adjacent walls
are
removed. In this embodiment, width of the second member (2) is preferably less
than the
4
CA 03191556 2023- 3-2

WO 2022/098316
PCT/TR2020/051029
width of the first member (1), such that when at least one part of the second
member (2) is
located inside the first member (1), other parts of the second member (2) do
not exceed
the outer walls (1b) of the first member (1). In this configuration,
insulating material (2) fills
inside the first member (1) and prevents first member (1) and second member
(2) to
contact each other. Since insulating material (2) prevents first member (1)
and second
member (2) to contact each other, a heat bridge cannot be formed between the
first
member (1) and second member (2). Moreover, since at least one part of the
second
member (2) is located inside the first member (1), strength of the profile
member (P)
becomes high. Insulating material (3) may expand outside of the first material
(1) so as to
provide a rectangular shape to the profile member (P). Therefore, profile
member (P) can
be easily used as post or beam of a building. When the profile member (P) is
used in a
building, first member (1) or second member (2) faces the outer environment
whereas
other one faces the inside of the building. Since no heat bridge is formed
between the first
member (1) and second member (2), thanks to the insulating member (3), inside
of the
building is insulated from the outer environment efficiently. Although first
member (1) and
second member (2) are exampled as having rectangular body, they may be in any
desired
shape such as cylindrical, triangular as well as a complex shape (like omega -
0- shape).
According to the shapes of the first member (1) and second member (2), said
insulating
material (3) may have receiving gap (3a) for reviewing at least one part of
the first
member (1) and/or second member (2).
In a preferred embodiment of the present application, said first member (1) is
made from a
metal. A preferred metal to be used in first member (1) is steel since steel
has high
mechanical strength. However, other metals such as aluminium or different
alloys can be
used. Similar to the first member (2), second member is preferably made from
metal (such
as steel, aluminium or an alloy). In an alternative embodiment, said first
member (1)
and/or second member (2) are made from wood. In this embodiment, natural wood
(hardwood) or a processed wood (such as chipboard or MDF) can be used. Wood
based
components provide relatively high strength and have aesthetic looks. In
another
alternative embodiment, said first member (1) and/or second member (2) are
made from
composite materials. Composite materials, such as carbon fiber containing
materials, are
relatively easy to shape and have high mechanical strength. Yet in another
alternative
embodiment, first member (1) and second member (2) are made from different
materials.
5
CA 03191556 2023- 3-2

WO 2022/098316
PCT/TR2020/051029
For example first member (1) may be made from wood wherein second member (2)
is
made from metal.
In another preferred embodiment of the present application, said insulating
material (3) is
made from cellular expanded glass (such as glass foam). Although cellular
expanded
glass is preferable because of its thermal conductivity and compressive
strength, any
other material having thermal conductivity below 0,058 w/m2K and
characteristic cylinder
compressive strength above 2,0 Mpa can be used. In an alternative embodiment,
said
insulating material may be an expandable foam, such as polyurethane foam. In
this
embodiment, after at least one part of second member (2) is located inside the
first
member (1), space between the first member (1) and second member (2) is filled
with
expandable foam. In order to fill said space, first member (1) and/or second
member (2)
may comprise at least one filling hole (10). Said filling hole (10) reduces
the total weight of
the profile (P) and enables some electrical components (such as cables) to
pass through
the profile (P).
According to the present invention, a building comprising the above described
profile
member (P) is also provided. Said building comprises at least one base (B)
comprising
plurality of profile members (P) connected to each other and at least one
panel (9)
provided between the profile members (P); at least one ceiling (C) comprising
plurality of
profile members (P) connected to each other and at least one panel (9)
provided between
the profile members (P); and at least one side wall (D) comprising plurality
of profile
members (P) connected to each other and at least one panel (9) provided
between the
profile members (P). According to the desired shape of the building, different
number of
side walls (D) may be used. For example for a circular shaped building, only
one side wall
(D) can be used and for a rectangular shaped building, 4 walls can be used.
In order to construct the building, plurality of profile members (P) comprised
by the base
(B), ceiling (C) and side wall (D) are connected to each other. In order to
maintain heat
bridge free properties of the profile members (P), when a first profile member
(P) is
connected to a second profile member (P), first member (1) of the first
profile member (P)
only contacts with the first member (1) of the second profile member (P).
Similarly, second
member (2) of the first profile member (P) only contacts with the second
member (2) of
the second profile member (P). In order to provide such connection, first
member (1)
6

PCT/TR2020/051029
comprises at least one first connection hole (la). Similarly, second member
(2) comprises
at least one second connection hole (2a). In order to attach two profile
members (P) to
each other, second connection holes (2a) of said profile members are aligned
to each
other and at least one connection element (7) (such as a bolt, screw or rivet)
is passed
through aligned second connection holes (2a). Moreover, in order to provide
connection
between the first connection holes (la) of different profile members (P), at
least one first
connection means (4) is used. Said first connection means (4) comprises at
least two forth
connections holes (4a). At least one of the forth connection hole (4a) is
aligned with the
first connection hole (la) of the first profile member (P) and least one
another of the forth
connection hole (4a) is aligned with the first connection hole (la) of the
second profile
member (P). By inserting at least one connection element (7) (such as a bolt,
screw or
rivet) through the aligned first connection holes (la) and forth connection
holes (4a), a
connection between the two profile members (P) is provided. As shown in figure
6, in
order to connect the perpendicular profile members (P) to each other, said
first connection
means (4) may have an "L" shaped cross-section.
In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, said building
further comprises
at least one outer frame member (5) connected to the ends of profile members
(P). In this
embodiment, said outer frame member (5) is connected to either first member
(1) or
second member (P) of the profile members (P). In other words, an outer frame
member
(5) cannot connect to first member (1) of a profile member (P) and second
member (2) of
another (or same) profile member (P). This ensures there is no heat bridge
between the
first member (1) of a profile member (P) second member (2) of another (or
same) profile
member (P). Said outer frame member (5) comprises at least one fifth
connection hole
(5a). Thanks to said fifth connection hole (5a), outer profile member (5) is
able to be
connected to a first member (1) or a second member (2) through first
connection hole (la)
or second connection hole (2a). When the building has a rectangular shape,
three outer
frame members (5) are connected to each other in the corners. In order to
connect said
three outer frame members (5), at least a second connection means (6) is used.
Said
second connection means (6) is preferably in the shape of a cube. Connections
between
the outer frame members (5) and second connection means (6) are provided by
plurality
of connection elements (7) (such as a bolt, screw or rivet).

CA 03191556 2023- 3-2

WO 2022/098316
PCT/TR2020/051029
In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, second member (2) of
a profile
member (P) is shorter than the first member (1) of the same profile member
(P). In this
embodiment, as shown in figure 6, when two profile members (P) are connected
to each
other from their ends, it is ensured that, second member (2) of a profile
member (P) is not
in contact with the first member (1) of other profile member (P), or vice
versa. In this
embodiment, said insulating material (3) may comprise at least one third
connection hole
(3b). When two profile members (P) are connected to each other, third
connection holes
(3b) of said profile members (P) may be connected to each other by at least
one
connection element (7) (such as a bolt, screw or rivet).
In another preferred embodiment, panel (9) comprises at least one support
element (8)
and at least one filler provided at least one side of said support element
(8). Said support
element (8) is preferably in the form of meshed plate. In order to provide the
panel (9),
said support element (8) is located between profile members (P) (for example
as shown in
figure 9, between 4 profile members (P)). Said support element (8) is in
connection with
first member (1) or second member (2) of each of the surrounding profile
members (P).
This configuration ensures that no heat bridge is formed between the first
members (1)
and second members (2) of the profile members. After the support element (8)
is secured
between the profile members (P), a filler is used preferably filling the two
sides of the
support element (8), up to the height of the profile members (P). As a result,
a straight
plane may be formed. Said filler preferably comprises heat insulating
material. In a
preferred embodiment, said filler and insulating material (3) have same
structure. In
another preferred embodiment, said filler is an expandable foam, such as
polyurethane
foam. In this embodiment, when support element (8) is secured between the
profile
members (P), at least one side (preferably both sides) of said support element
(8) is filled
with expandable foam.
Since profile member (P) of the present invention comprises an insulating
material (3),
located between the first member (1) and second member (2), forming a heat
bridge
between said first member (1) and second member (2) is prevented. Moreover,
since at
least one part of the second member (2) is located inside the first member
(1), mechanical
strength of the profile member is improved. Accordingly, a profile member (P)
enabling
high mechanical strength and heat insulation at the same time is provided.
