GEOMETRIC DESIGN FISHING ROD.

Abstract of Disclosure.
The principles of this invention apply to the incorporation
of geometric forms in the tapering configuration of a
fishing rod. These said geometric forms being either of
sectional form, or achieved by a structural composition of
varied material density within the rod shaft sections.
A rod of such geometric design would have properties in the
uppermost section that would favour directional movement.
This would be merged with a section below that can flex to
any angle with equal resistance, and this section will in
turn be merged to a section which has properties to oppose
flex by means of geometric principle. A rod so described
will possess an inherant capacity to flex and recover, with
a compressional and recoil action, that will favour the
selected angle of the delivery stroke. The stroke of the
cast will be made in a more decisive and efficient manner
from a shaft of geometric design than a shaft which
possess an equal radial flex character throughout its
complete working length.

Geometric Design Fishing Rod.


The embodiments of the invention in which exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined
as follows :

I. A fishing rod comprised of a tip section, a center
section and a butt section ; said center section
integrally joining said tip section and said butt section,
the cross section of said tip section being oval,
rectangular or triangular ; said butt section being of
diamond cross section which merges into an octagonal cross
section before joining said center section which is
circular in cross section.

2. The fishing rod of claim I , wherein said rod is
either tubular o? solid.

3, The fishing rod of claim I , including splines
attached externally or integrated in the material of
said rod so as to strengthen specific sectional points
thereby inducing a geometric condition in said rod.

Geometric Design Fishing Xod.

Details of Specification.
At the present time fishing rods are produced in either a
solid or tubular form, and are constructed from one or more
pieces, the latter being joined by some type of ferrule
device. The ~eornetric design may be applied to the tapering
shaft of either tubular or solid construction, that is
manufactured in one or more sections~ -

A rod is acknowledged to be comprised of three working zones.The tip being the upper zone, the central zone being the
middle, and the butt being the lower zone. The butt drives
the middle, the middle dri~es the tip, and the tip is
linked by the line to the weight to be cast. The individual
function of these zones are relative to the action of the
rod, and its performance, and the geometric principles of
the in~ention would serve to accent the shaft zone function.
The majority of rod shafts at the present time are produced
in a tubutlar form. llhis is a manufacturing process which
employs a circular tapering metal former around which is
wrapped a section of fiber cloth that is impregnated with
resin. After processing, the metal former is withdrawn, and
on extraction, produces the hollow tapering tube that was
moulded around it.
Solid materials are normally extruded, which produces a
solid tapering form, or a system of grinding is employed
to obtain the circular shape.
The factors of geometry which relate to this invention may
take two forms. At one extreme the geometric design shapes
for the tip may be rectangular, oval or triangular in
section : these shapes favour directional mo~ion and will
resist lateral movementO The described section would be
mer~ed with a circular mid-section, which is a sectional
form that provides an ability to flex evenly to any point.
This portion would in turn merge with an octagonal,
diamond or hexagonal butt. These latter shapes resist flex
in a superior manner to a circular shape. A shaft so
described may be constructed by an extrusion process, or
by a system of grinding, or produced in a tubular form
from a manclrel shaped to mould them.
At the other extreme, the principle of geometric design may
be embodied within the structural composition of the rod
shaft, done by varying the material density of constructional
material. This may be done by the incorporation of spines
bein~ laid alon~ the shaft in the upper and lower zones of
the rod. ~uch spines will contribute the necessary geometric
elements to enable the rod to furlction in the manner
prescribed in the inventionO

Frorn what has been described, the directional geometry of
the flex pattern of the tip will aid the cast. This will
occur by the tip aligning the weight to be thrown
directly behind the pulling action of the rod, ancl on
release, because of the inherant directional movement of
the tip, will provide a more accurate course of delivery
thrust.Another improvement in rod action by the use of
geometric principle in the lower portion of the shaft,
will allow strength factors to be created by sectional
form, rather than the addition of materials.
The inven~ion will also enable the the action of the rod
to be varied, from the amounts of flex resistant ancl equal
flex regions which emplo~ed in the middle ancl lower zones
of the shaft. A stiff butt produces a fast action, while a
slow action originates from a butt with less power. These
factors hein~ relative to dynamic action.
The advantages of the invention so described, will be
mor~ apparent when considered in association with the
drawings which form a part thereof, and in which -

spines may be placed along the shaft to produce the

of ths rod, which illustrates the positions that spines
may be placed alon~ the shaft to produce a geometric
