ABSTRACT

A conventional firescreen made from a heat resistant
glass, used for an open wood burning stove or fireplace, is known
to be much more efficient in the prevention of heat loss than a
firescreen made from a steel wire mesh or a perforated steel
plate. However, the glass firescreen can easily become stained
by soot and smoke which therefore requires numerous cleanings.
There is also the possibility of the glass shattering if a fire
is allowed to become too large and hot. In this invention, the
glass firescreen has an air intake diverting plate situated behind
the glass plate at the lower and/or side portions of the glass
frame allowing the formation of a moving air curtain over the rear
surface of the glass which will protect the glass from the soot,
smoke and excessive heat, and thereby assist in preventing said stain
formation.

GLASS FIRESCREEN WITH AIR CURTAIN FOR WOOD STOVES AND FIREPI~CES
Field of the Invention
This invention relate~ to a glass firescreen ~or a stove
or fireplace~ particularly an open wood burning ~tove or fireplace.
S Review of the Prior Art

. _
The known firescreens made from a steel wire mesh or per-
forated steel plate will prevent the escape of sparks and allows the
viewing of the fully open fire but also aIlows air to be sucked up
the c~imn~y unhindered, causing a large draft which pulls an unduly
large part of the heat up the chimney and also feeds the fire which
increases the speed of consumption of the fuelO A glass firescreen
permits the desirable viewing of the fire, and transmission of
radiant heat, and also reduces the amount of air reaching the fire~
It therefore does not have the problems mentioned above to the same
extent, but requires frequent cleaning of the inner surface of the
glass due to stains caused by soot and smoke. There is also the
problem of the glass possibly shattering if the fire is allowed
to become too large and hot.
It has been found that these disadvantages can be over-
come by providing at least one air intake..diverting member such
as a plate that runs along the whole length of one o~ the lower or
side portions of the frame`where air is taken in for combustion~
The plate(s) will deflect intaken air upward or sid~ways toward
the glass forming an air curtain to protect the inner surface of
the glass from the soot, smoke and excessive heat~ decreasing the
need for the cleaning of the scr~en.

Thus, a firescxeen fo~ place~ent within a $ixepl~ce
surround comy~isin~;
a ~rame h~vin~ at least a lower edge and tWo side
edges;
a heat resistant glass plate mounted by the frame;
mounting means to hold the frame in spaced relationship
from said surround and to provide a continuous elongate air inlet
slit along one edge of said frame,
an air intake diverting member mounted by the frame
behind the air inlet slit to provide over the rear surface of the
glass plate a moving air curtain for inhibition o~ deposit thereon
of soot and smok~ from the fire, said elongate slit providing an
unencumbered air inlet duct for said diverting member.

Descri tion of the Preferred Embodiments
P _. _
The glass firescreen illu3trated in Figure 1, compri~e~
a h,eat resistant glass plate 1 held by a frame 2, and an air intake

div'erting member constituted by plate 3 attached to brackeks 4 which
with the hel~ of upper hook~ 5'hold the glass firescreen in place
before the fireplace. Two handle~ 6 are pxovided at opposite ends
of the frame 2 for the easy lifting and placingin position of the

glass fire~creen. The ~lass plate sits- within the frame 2 on
saddle plates 7 fastened by rivets 8 to the frame. At least part

of the air supply for the stove passes up through the base sec~ion
of the frame 2 and is diverted upward in the form of a moving cur-
tain across the rear or inner surface of the glass by the air intake

diverting plate 3 so as to i~hibit the deposition thereon of soot
or smoke and to protec~ the glass against excessive hea~. The

plate is inclined toward the rear face of the glass plate to provide
a throt$1ed outlet opening to~ard the pla~e. A small gap is allowed
between the stove and the screen running along all vf the sides

of the screen in order to induce sufficient air in~ake to form a
complete air curtain that shields the glas~0 The upper hooks 5

have air intake h~les to preven$ the blockage of the a~r supply
from the top of the frame 2 and con~equent formation of stainsO

the damper of the stove ~ocated at the st~ve outlet pipe. The air
in~ake diverting plate shown in Figure 3 i8 of L~hape, while that
shown in Figùre 3a i~ of hal moon shapQ.
The invention can also be adapted to variou~ kind~ o~
glass firescreens for wood ~toves or fir~place~ as follow~:
T~e firescreen illustrated in Figure 4 i8 a ~ingle door
firescreen with hin~es 9 at one ~ide. The air intake divertlng
plate~ 10, shown most clearly in Figuxe 4, is movable by any ~uitable
con`trol mechanism (not shown~ ~or the closing and opening of the
air intake. Thï~ control mechani~m is attachea to the fixed frame
part 11, which iB actually a section of a stove opening or the
outer frame of a fireplace firescr~en. The open and closed posi-
tions of the air intake diverting plate 10 are ~hown in Figure 5

and Figure 6 respectively. The shape of the air intake diver~ing
plate in Figure 5 i~ also an L-shape while that in Figure 5a is
also haif moon ~hape. The control mechanism of the air intake
diverting plate will not be disclosed in this patent application~
The glass fire~creen illustrated in Figure 7 has the
same air intaXe diverting plate arrangement as the screen shown
in Figure 4, except that this is a double door firescreen. ~hiY
arrangement for an air intake diverting plate 12 can also be
applied to a bi-fold four-door glass fire~creen.
The glass firescreen illustrated in Figure 8 is for an

unusually tall firescreen opening and i8 provided with two,
controlled, vertical air intake diverting plate~ 13 ~ituated one
at each vertical edge of the fire~creen~
