ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
In the cleaning of toilets, it is advantageous to
dispense into the bowl a cleaning composition containing a
halogen releasing compound, for example alkaki metal hypochlorite,
which serves to disinfect the bowl. The cleaning composition
also contains a detergent, fragrance, and dye. A dispenser is
used comprising a product chamber means for discharging and
filling the dispenser and vent means. The dispenser may have
at least two product chambers one for a detergent and dye
constituent and another for a disinfectant. The present
specification discloses in particular a passive dispenser
comprising one or more product chambers and means adapted to
fill the product chamber, as well as means to dispense the
solution therefrom. The improvement comprises the inclusion
within the product chamber of a halogen stable dye Acid Blue
249, C.I. No. 74220.

CLAIMS
1. In a passive dispenser comprising at least one
product chamber, means adapted to fill the product
chamber, and means adapted to dispense solution there-
from, the improvement comprising the inclusion within
said product chamber the halogen stable dye Acid Blue 249,
C.I. No. 74220.

2. A passive dispenser for dispensing a halogen
releasing compound in solution into a body of liquid,
the dispenser comprising a first and a second product
chamber, said product chambers being separate from one
another, means adapted to fill said chambers with liquid
and to dispense solution therefrom in response to changes
in the level of the body of liquid, at least one product
chamber containing the halogen stable dye Acid Blue 249,
Color Index No. 74,220.

3. A dispenser as in claim 1, wherein the solution
comprises aqueous alkali metal hypochlorite.

4. A dispenser as in claim 2, wherein the solution
comprises aqueous alkali metal hypochlorite.

5. A dispenser as in claim 1, wherein the solution
comprises 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin.

6. A dispenser as in claim 2, wherein the solution
comprises 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin.

7. The dispensers of claims 1, 2 or 3 further com-
prising means for venting at least one product chamber
to the atmosphere.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION

In the cleaning of toilets, it is advantageous to
dispense into the bowl a cleaning composition containing
a halogen releasing compound, for example alkali metal
hypochlorite, which serves to disinfect the bowl. The
cleaning composition also contains a detergent, fragrance,
and dye.

Recent U.S. Patents 4,171, 546, 4,186,546 and
4,208,747 to Dirksing; 4,281,421 to Nyquist et al; 4,305,162
to Cornelisse, Jr. et al, and 4,307,474 to Choy each disclose
a passive dispenser which dispenses the active cleaning and
optional constituents into the bowl in response to a change
in toilet tank liquid level. These patents supplement the
art in the field disclosed in older U.S. Patents 650,161 to
Williams et al; 1,175,036 to Williams and 3,504,384 to Radley
et al.

The aforesaid recent patents are characterized by
providing a dispenser comprising a product chamber, means
for discharging and filling the dispenser, and vent means.
Two or more of these dispensers can be used in combination
to provide dispensation of active constituents from each
dispenser. U.S. Patent 4,216,027 to ~ages discloses a
dispenser of the same type, but having at least two product
chambers, one chamber for the detergent and dye constituents,
the other chamber for the disinfectant.

U.S. Patents 4,249,274 and 4,308,625 t~ ~itko
diseloses various dyes resistant ~o hy~ochlorite, such as
FD~C slue No. 1 and FD&C Green No. 3.

It has now been found unexpectedly that Acid
Blue 249, C.I~ No. 74220, a phthalocyanine dye, is also
resistant to attacX by halogen releasing constituents,
when said dye is included in a dispenser of the type described
above. A dye of this type is available from Sandoz Colors
Chemicals,Inc., under the name Carta Brilliant ~lue PTS
(43% active ingredient concentration).

In particular the above mentioned Acid Blue 249 is
resistant to attack from N-halogenated organic materials,
e.g., l-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin. By stability
is meant resistance of the dye to oxidation by halogen and
re~ulting loss of color.

Thus the present invention provides a passive dis-
penser comprising at least one product chamber~ means adapted
to fill the product chamber, and means adapted to dispense
solution therefrom. The improved dispenser includes within
the product chamber the halogen stable dye Acid Blue 249,
C.I. No. 74220.

In another embodiment the present invention provides
a passive dispenser for dispensing a halogen releasing com-
pound in solution into a body of liquid, the dispenser com-
prising a first and a second product chamber, said product
chambers being separate from one anothert means adapted to
fill said chambers with liquid and to dispense solution there-
from in response to changes in the level of the body of liquid,
at least one product chamber containing the halogen stable

Co~parative tests were conducted on two dyes
and on the Carta Brilliant Blue dye of the present invention.
A solution containing 5.2 ppm of to~al available halogen
was prepared, 2.0 ppm being a typical halogen concentration
used to effect disinfecting of a toilet bowl. At a dye
level of 6.2 ppm, the following results were obtained for
the three dyes tested:

From the above data it is apparent that Carta
Brilliant Blue dye is quite stable in the presence of
halogen releasing agents.
