ABSTRACT

The present invention relates to a railway truck
including a side frame and a bolster. The bolster has two
ends, each end having two sets of inner and outer bolster
gibs. Each set of inner and outer bolster gibs form a
pocket on the bolster to contact a side frame column. The
preferred clearance from the side frame column to the inner
bolster gib is equal to or greater than the distance between
the side frame column to the outer bolster gib.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR
PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A railway truck comprising a bolster and two side
frames, wherein the bolster has two ends and each side frame
has an opening, each bolster end being adapted to be received
in a side frame opening,
each said bolster end including two sets of inner
and outer bolster gibs extending transversely outward from
the longitudinal axis of the bolster,
each set of the inner and outer bolster gibs
forming a pocket to receive a column of one of said side
frames, the clearance between the inner bolster
gib and the side frame column being greater than
the distance between the outer bolster gib and the side
frame column.

2. A railway truck comprising a bolster and two side
frames, said bolster being supported within said side frames,
said bolster including at each end thereof an inner bolster
gib and an outer bolster gib, each such gib extending
outward from the bolster to form a pocket on the bolster to
contact the side frame, the clearance between the inner
bolster gib and the side frame being about 1/2 inch (1.27 cm),
and the clearance between the outer bolster gib and the side
frame column being about 3/8 inch (0.95 cm).

3. The railway truck of claim 2, wherein each bolster
end includes two sets of inner and outer bolster gibs, each
gib extending outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the
bolster.

4. The railway truck of claim 3, wherein the side
frame includes two columns each of which contacts the
bolster gib pocket.

BOLSTER GOB SPACING ON ROLLER BEARING TRUCKS

Background of the Invention
queue present invention relates generally to railway
trucks, and moxie particularly to a railway truck hatting a
bolster received in two side frames warily inner arid outer
3aolster gobs foci pockets Jo receive the side frame columns.
The presence of such bolster gobs is Noel prom patents
such as U. S. Patent No. 3,109,387. however, aye patent is
mainly concerned with side frame s ion lugs which limit the
horizontal end rotative movement of the bolster within the
side frames.
It has bee discovered that the side frames in such
railway trucks tend to move inward Howard eta ho other during
service. The reason or use tendency is unknown, but a
greeter Mormon is suspected under loaded car conditions
Accordirlgly, excessive ionic bolster gob wear has been
experienced with minimal o'er gob wear OWE course such gob
wear is due to ye side frames tendency to move inward
toward each other, whereby the inter gobs axe contacted by
the side Erase columns.
exasnple of such inner bolster gib-side fume clime
wear was obtained Tom a heavy duty Association of American
.- Railroads AWRY) standard railway truck after 480,000 miles
of service . The immure bolster gob had worn 0 . 211 inch
( O . 536 cm) aTld the side Erase column contacting the inter
bolster gob had worn 0.172 inch (0.437 cm). The outer
bolster gob showed no wear and the side frame column con-
ticketing such outer bolster gob also showed no wear.
I'

I

The present Associa~iorl ox American Railroads (JAR)
standard or heavy duty railway tucks is to provide for an
initial, non-woxn inner bolster gob side frame column
spacing of 1/4 inch I . 63 cm) and an outer bolster gib-slde
5 frump column spacing ox 5/8 inch if, 58 cm) . Such a spacing
;~. - arrangement has resulted in the excessive inner gob wear
discussed above. Such inner bolster gob and contacting side
frame column wear is noted to take place mostly in tile first
one or two years of success o the railway truck. After
10 this initial wear in period little further wear is believed
to occur.
Accordingly, it is a object of the present invention
to provide a railway truck which exhibits lessened firmer
bolster gob wear and improved service life for the boy stir
15 and side frames of the truck.

.
go
The present venison provides a railway truck having a
ballast supported irk two side frames. The bolster has two
sets of inner and outer bolster gobs at e then end thereof,
such gobs forming a pocJcek to receive the side frame columns.
20 The clearance between the inrler gob and the ire frame
column is inquired prom the AJAR standard arid the clearance
been the outer gob and the side tame coluIlLn is decreased
from the Ajar standard. A preferred relation 1: between the
inner and outer gib-side frame column clearances has been
25 wound to be where the inner gib-side- frame column clearance
is equal Jo or slightly greater thasl the outer gib-side
frame column clearance.

~l3~7;~

In particular, the present invention provides a railway
truck comprising a bolster and two side frames, said bolster
being supported within said side frames, said bolster including
at each end whereof an inner bolster gob and an outer bolster
gin, each such gob extending outward from the bolster to
- form a pocket on the bolster to contact the side frame, the
clearance between the inner bolstP~ gob and the side frame
being increased from the AJAR standard of 1/4 inch to about
1/2 inch, and the clearance between the outer bolster gob
and the side frame column being reduced from the AIR standard
of 5/8 inch to about I inch.
he present invention reduces the excessive Remount of
inner gob wear, while maintaining the total inner and out-
gob clearance required by the AJAR such that a long service
life is obtained before the maximum JAR standard of 1 1/2
inches (3.81 cm) of total clearance between the inner and
outer gins and the side frame Callahan is reached and repair
it required.

.
I the drawing, a top partial view ox the bolster-side

frame of the present invention is shown.

- Detailed-De Croatia of the Present Invention
I,
In the drawing a partial top view of owe side ox bolster
10 is shown. Side frame columns 12 and 14 with respective

worry plates 15 and 17 are also shown as nearly abutting
bolster 10.

I

The end of bolster 10 is shown to have two sets of
inner bolster gobs 16 and 24 and outer bolster gobs 18
and 26 which exit transversely outward prom the longitudinal
axis of bolster 10. Side frame column 12 has a stop lug pa
extending outward from the longitudinal axis of side frame
column 12, and side frame column 14 has a stow lug 22
extending outward prom the longitudinal axis of side frame
clime 14.
The space between inner bolster gobs 16 and 24 and side
frame columns I and 14 is increased prom the JAR standard
of 1/4 inch to about 1/2 inch (1.27 cm), and the space
between outer bolster gobs 18 and 26 and side frame columns
12 and 14 it reduced from the AJAR standard of 5~8 inch to
about 3/8 inch Tao cm). A preferred relation is to haze
the distance between the inner bolster gob and the side
r2me-co-lum~ equal to or Greta than the distance between
the outer bolster gob and the side free column.
