Thi9 invention concern a device to be installed on a tire to
cover same and act as the tread. Its main purpose is to provlde an
element which, when fitted onto a ire shall prolong lts useful life
in a simple manner,

As ls known, the grooves on tires become worn with use. These
grooves are the design of the treads, and when their depth dimlnishes
to a given extent the wire loses lts grip and must be replaced.

ikewise, usage under certaln conditions, as, for example, on
marshy terrain, make it necessery to resort to specific desi~n~ ox
the grooves of the tread ln order to obtain the nece6sary traction.
It may also be necessary to resort to the use of speclal devices,
such as chains, by mPans of which the traction of a normal tire 1
enhancet.

The lnvention seeks to obtain device that Jay be installed on
a tire to restore the tread, both when its traction i8 reduced as a
result of wear and when it is necP6aary to resort to grooves of sul~able
design for speclflc conditions of the terrain.

In order to fulfill the purpose of the invention, the device subject
of same ls characterized by the inclusion of a band of elastomer material
ln which a central part and two lateral parts are defined. The central
part, which ia thicker has a surface which ré~ts again6t the tread of
a tire; its opposite surface has a grooved design and between both

surfaces there i9 a reinforcing rro3s-piece The lateral parts have
one surface which rests against part of the ~ire!s flanks and an opposite
surface Part of the reinforcing cross-piece continue between
the lateral surfaces, said laterai parts ending in an edge ong
which a means of support of same extendæ, surrounded by the lateral
parts mentioned in last instance.

As an additlonal objective of the invention, the band is of an endlessly
circular configuration, the means of support being constitueed by a
circumferentlally wlnding cord.

A further side-line of this lnvention is that the band is of an openly
circular configuration, the mean3 of support being constltuted by an
spenlyclrcumferen~ial winding cord that extends beyond the ends of the
band and ends ln means fur reciprocally lining its terminal zones.

A further side-line of the invention is thst the band is substantially
flat and flexible, the means of support being constituted by a tubular
piece within which can be lodRed a cord having at its ends means for
reclprocally joinlng them.

A fureher ob~eceive of the invention is that the band haæ the shape
of a circular sector, the means of support belng constituted by a tube
within which can be lodged a cord; each end of the sector may have
mutually engaging overflaps.

According to -the above mentioned features and objects of the
present inven-tion, there ls provided a device to be fitted
over a tire -to cover and fulfill the functions of the tread.
The device comprises a band of elastomeric ma-terial adapted
to be disposed about a tire casing having a central portion
and two lateral parts. The central portion is -thicker -than
the lateral parts and have a surface which is adpa-ted to be
disposed on the tread portion of a tire, and an opposite
surface which is grooved according to a tread design, with a
cross-piece of reinforcing material extending through the
central portion between both surfaces. The lateral parts
have a surface which is adapted to be disposed on part of
flanks of a tire. An opposite outwardly facing surface is
provided with the cross-piece of reinforcing material
extending between both surfaces of the lateral parts. Each
of the lateral parts ends in an edge along which extends a
means of support for the device about a tire that includes a
cord, surrounded by the extension of the reinforcing cross-
piece. When the band is disposed about a tire with worn
tread and superlined with the band thereabout, it provides
the tire with a suitable tread.

According to a further broad aspect of the present invention
there is provided a method of restoring the tread of a tire
having its tread worn away which comprises providing a tire
casing with its tread worn away and mounting and supporting
-thereabou-t the device above described with the la-teral parts
thereof extending over only a portion of the sidewalls of

the casing

In order that the inventlon may be understood end carried out
ln a simple manner, itspreferred forms of execution have been shown
in the attached drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspectiv& and cross-sectlon view of one of the
preferred forms of the invention;

Flgure 2 is, likewise, a perspective view of another of the
preferred forms of the invention;

Figure 3 ls a cross-section viPw of the band of the lnventlon,
showing the manner in which the invented device is installed on an
ordinary tire;

Figure 4 i9 a perspective view of another of the possible forms
of the invention

Figure 5 i5 al80 a perspective view of another of the po331ble
form of the lnvention, and

Figure 6 is a top-view of a variant for of the execution
illustrated ln figure 5.

In all the figures, the save references are used to lndicate
similar or corresponding parts of the invented device that includes

a band oE elastomer materlal 1, which has a central part 2 and
two lateral parts 3 and 4, the centraL part 2 being the thicker
of them, with a smooth surEace 5, whlch rests against the tread
of a tire 6, and an opposite groovecl surface 7, which grooves
form a design that makes it adhere to the surface on which the
device is to roll.
Between both surfaces S and 7 there is a reinEorcement of
plastic or metallic or textile material formed by the layers 8
and 9, while the lateral parts 3 and 4, which are thinner than
the central part 2, have a surface 10 which rests on
part of the flanks of the tire 6, as can be seen in figure 3,
and an opposite surface, as can be seen in the figures, part
of the reinforcement contained in the central part 2 continu-
ing between both lateral surfaces, shown as 13. The reinforce-
ment formed by the layers 8 and 9 can extend in a continuous
manner along the band of elastomer material 1, or it can be
discontinuous, and the same is true of the continuations 13.
The lateral parts 3 and 4 end in an edge 11 along which
a means of support 12 of same extends, surrounded by the
continuations 13 of reinforcemen-t 9.
In this manner the reinforcements formed by layers 8 and
9 and the continuations 13 form a joining cross-piece between
the means of support 12, thereby providing unity to the whole,
without taking away from its necessary flexibility. The
material used in the layers 8 and 9 is not the object oE the
present invention.
The band of elastomer material 1 can be flat, as can be
observed,

in which case the means of 6upport 12 is a longltudinal tubular place
that runs along each edge ll, wlthin whlch a cord 14 shall be threaded,
once the band is adapted to the tlre 6, as can be seen in Flgure 3.
Once the band 1 has been arranged over the tire 6, the cord L4 shall be
joined by its ends by the use of any suitable linkage whlch i3 not
part of the lnvention,

The band 1, a shown in Figure 2, can be, in a flrst variant of
execution ox a endless circular conflguration, with an internal
diamPter suitable to be fitted over the tire 6, resting it3 surface 5
against the tread of same and the qurface l ox its lateral parts 3
and 4, against part of the flsnks of said tire 6. In this form, the
means of 6upport i9 a cord, although, since sald cord is a circumferen-
tially wlnding cord, the longltudinal tubular piece is dispensed with.

Aa i8 shown in Figure 4~ the bawd 1 can be? in a second variant
of execution, of an openly circular configuration, which mazes l easier
to fit it over the tire, in whlch case the means of support, as in the
preceding execution, i6 only a cord which, as can be seen ln Figure 4,
is an openly circumferential wlnding cord, extending beyond the end of
the band and terminating in any suitable means ox reciprocal linkage
thaw is not included in this invention.

In another variant of execution, that is especially appropriate for
changing the tread in agricultural or road machinery, the band 1 can be
a clrcular sector, such às that il5u~trated ln Figure3 5 and 6, and said
Hector may be of a suitable extension so as to act as a filler strlp

to compensate uneven wear in the tire treads.

In ehis case the means of support 12 is a longitudlnal tubular
plece ~hst runs along each edge 11, within which shall be threaded a
cord to support the sector over the tire.

At the terminal end3 of the sector it is possible to provlde
engaging overlaps 15 that, through reciprocal ~oinin~ means, allow
the sectors to be linked with each other.

It may occur, if deemed ~ultable, that it be necessary to peal the
shell of the tire 6 whose tread is to be restored, ln order Jo place
over said shell the deyice of the invention, ln which case Pn ~dheslve
shall be interposed between the pealed shell and the surface S of said
device.
