ABSTRACT
The present invention relates generally to structures for
a multistorey parking building or parking attachment to an
existing building and to devices for automated parking and,
more particularly, to steel structures made of modular
elements and to devices and platforms for automatic car
distribution within a multistorey parking space.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A multistorey parking apparatus comprising: A
multistorey parking building consisting of columns,
longitudinal and transverse elements for partitioning of
the building into boxes for parking vehicles, lanes for
horizontal vehicle distribution, and elevator pits;
longitudinal guides in each lane and transverse guides in
each box, said longitudinal guides being perpendicular to
said transverse guides; elevators located in said elevator
pits and having longitudinal and transverse guides which
align, respectively, with said longitudinal guides of each
lane and said transverse guides of each box at appropriate
levels; a platform located in each box, said platform
having at least one guide track for vehicle wheels and tow
wheel fixing means located in said at least one guide track
for preventing movement of vehicle wheels; and shuttle
means for moving said platforms, said shuttle means
comprising: two frames one of which is fitted with
longitudinal wheel means for moving said shuttle in said
longitudinal guides of each lane and another of which is
fitted with transverse wheel means for moving said shuttle
in said transverse guides of each box, said frames being
joined by jack means for lowering said transverse wheel
means into engagement with said transverse guides and thus
raising said longitudinal wheel means out of engagement
with said longitudinal guides or raising said transverse
wheel means out of engagement with said transverse guides
thus lowering said longitudinal wheel means into engagement
with said longitudinal guides thus enabling said shuttle
means to travel along said transverse or said longitudinal
guides.

The present i~vention relates generally to structures for
a nultistorey parking building or parking attach~ent to an
~xisting building and to devices for auto~ated parking and,
~ore particularly, to steel structuxes ~ade of ~cdular
ele~ents ~nd to devices and platfor~s for automatic car
distribution uithin a multistorey parking space.
Background of the inverltion
At present time, parking spaces are in the ~orm of open
paved squares, basement storeys o~ buildings or as separate
concrete structures where a vehicle is being parked by its
driver ~or valet parking). Open parking spaces occupy
significant areas o~ alre~dy cro~deti cities. Multistorey
concrete parkin~ buildir~s with human parking (by driver or
valet~ are bulky, relatively expensive and iner~ective since
the area and the height are only partially us~i ~or vehicle
place~ent so that the volu~e of a parking building is used up
to 35X only. When ~ost parkin~ spaces are occupied, the
arriving vehicles are manoeuvring or waiting with runnir~
engine which leads to increased Pollution~ This invention
aios at solvin~ parking proble~s in downtowns o~ bi~ cities,
at aeroports, theatres, shoppin~ ~al:ls, stadiu~s and
universities; at eli~ination o~ street parkir~ in cro~ied
areasJ at decre~sing pollution and at providing olean, sare,
ineXpensiv~ and ~axt auto~ateci parking spaces.
Preli~inary search did not find any patents proposing
structures and devices ~or autooated ~ultistor~ parking
buildings.

Sl~mnary of tlle in~ention
The object of th~ ~Ivention is the structure o~ the
~ultistorey parkir~ buil~in~ and the devices providing its
auto~atic operation at all stages o~ parking process. The
park~lg building or the parkin~ attach~ent to an existi~
buildir~ is ~anufactured as a steel fra~e in such a way that
the volume of the struGture is partitioned into boxes in which
vehicles are stationed and horisontal lanes ( corridors ) and
vertical lanes ~ with elevators ) ~here devices ( shuttles or
trolleys) are ~oving that distribute vehicles into boxes. Due
to different sizes of vehicles, there nay be several dif~erent
types o$ boxes which provides for better use of the volu~e oE
the parking building. Every box has a plat~orm on which to
park a vehicle. Plat~orns with or without vehicles can be
~oved through the building by shuttles moving on
special ~uides which serve si~ultaneously as supporting
structure of the build W . For better ventilation, boxes are
separated vertically by grid deck platir~ or solid floors with
holes. Walls of the ~Iderground part of the parking buildin~
ars ~ade o~ c~ncrete and the upper Part can be ~ade with any
appropriate materials, with or without windows. Vertical
transportation of shuttles or troll~ys i5 provided by special
elevators with guides. Guides in elevators and guides in
horiz~ntal corridors coincide when elevators stop. ~very
plat~orm has two ~uide track5 and the ~eohani~ to preoisely
check and ~ix the vehicle on the plat~orm.

entrance, a driver put~ hi~ vehiole wl the plat~or~ set
~n a shuttle uhloh awaits oustomers, leaves the vehicle and
pays the ~ee to the autooatic parking-disPcnser uhioh
im~ediately gives the driver a code--nu~ber and directs the

~huttle with the a vehicle to the v~cant ~ox with that code-
nunber. The driver leaves the pre~ises. Upon arrival to the
box, the plat~or~ with the ear is ~oved fro~ the shuttle into
the box, the vacant shuttle is directed to a vacant box with
the platform but without a vehicle,the plat~orm is transferred
ont~ the shuttle which returns to the entrance to wait for
another custo~er. There are several shuttles in the building;
anong them there is a vacant shuttle for vehicle deliverY and
another one with a plat~orm to take a vehicle for parking. I~
the parking is full, then the shuttles st~nd still where they
are until a driver arrives to pick up his vehicle. The driver
dials his code-nu~ber and pays the balance to the parkin~-
dispenser; then the closest shutt,le i5 direoted to the box,
~akes delivery of the vehicle and awaits another custo~er.
All operations are autooatic and cooputerized including the
inventory o~ vacant and ocoupied boxes, control of shuttles
and elevators and additional services, if any (e.g.,auto~atic
car wash~. In case of equipment ~ailure, a technician on duty
dslivers a vehicle by ~anual operations.

~QIE~ Shuttles are devices Rhich distribute plat~oros with or
without vehicles into or out of boxes and are circulating in
lanes (corridors) and on elevators.
Trolleys represent moving platforos that are nor~ally
stationed in boxes (Rith or without vehicles) and are
circulating in lanes (corridors) and on elevators in order to
deliver a vehicle parked on a trolley into a box ~or stora~e
and to take it out o~ the box to the exit on request of the
driver o~ the vehicle.

An auto~ated ~ultistorey parkin~ building as seen in Figs. 1
to 3 consists o~ steel struotures: coluDn 1, horizontal
longitudinal ele~ents 2J horizontal tr~lsverse el0~ents 3,
longitudinal guides 4 and transverse 8uides 5 ~e.g.
ohannel~shaped). At interse¢tions o~ guides 4 ~ 5) the
vertical parts o~ 8uides 4 are truncated. The said eleuents
are assRbbled in such u way that th0 entire vol~Ine o~ the
building is partitioned into ~oxes 7 (where vehiole~ are

~ultistorey parking building and si~ulteneously serve as a
base for installation of the grid deck plating~ Vertically,
between floors, shuttles or trolleys with vehicles are moved
by elevators 6, which also have guides 4 and 5. All guides of
each floor are on the sa~e horizontal level. ~levator 6 ~oving
a shuttle or a trolley with a ~ehicle to certain floor of the
parking, stops in such position that his guides 4 and 5
coincide with guides 4 and 5 of the ~loor so that shuttle or a
trolle~ with a vehicle can move horizontally in two perpen-
dicular directions.
In every box 7 there is platform 8 with edges bent up in
order not to spill dirt on the top of louer vehicle. Vehicles
are put on platfor~s at the entrance by drivers. The platfor~
8 ~see drawings 4 to 6) has tuo guide-tracks 9 of enough width
to acconoodate wheels 12 of dif~erent acceptable vehicles.
One or both tracks ~ have a ~echanisn fixing wheels oP a
vehicle on the platPorn. For exa~ple, there are two strips 10
~oved in transverse direction by ~echanis0s 11 (e.g.,
hydraulio jacks) that fasten wheels 12 in traoks 9. One, two
or all Pour wheels o~ a vehicle can be ~ixed. Plat~orn 8 is
~astened on a shuttle 14, e.g., by ~eans o~ studs (pins~ 13.
The shuttle 14 (see drawin~s 7 to ~) has a plate or ~ra~e
14 ~itted with wheel6 15 uith a ~otor 16. The shuttle 14 has
also the botton ~ra~e 18 with tr~n~ver~e wheels 17 a~d ~otor
19. The ~ra~e 18 is connected with the ~ra0e 14 o~ the
shuttle by jaeks 20 that oh~nee the vertioal position o~

Shuttle 14 (uith plat~orm 8 and a vehicle) in ~otion along
the longitudinal guides 4 is sho~n in Fig.10. At a stop near
a va~ant box 7, the ~echanis~ 21 starts and hydraulic jacks 20
lower ~heels 17 into ~uides 5, slmultaneously lifting uheels
15; the shuttle 14 ~ovir~ alor~ ~uides 5 enters box 7, leaves
on special supports (not shown) the plat~or~ 8 with a vehicle
and returns to euides 4 ~or the next operation (next parking
or vehicle delivery).
In Pig~11, a version is shown where the plat~orn is fixed
per~anently to the shuttle to ~orn a trolley 23 which either
re~aines in a box 7 with a vehiole parked thereon or ~oves to
the exit (e~trance) to deliver a car and waits there ~or a new
vehicle. This solution is di~erent ~ron the previous one in
that there are no sh~ttles nor plat~or~s but there are as ~uly
trolleys 23 as there are boxes 7, and each trolley has a
plat~onn as its integral part and is used Por parking a
vehiole into a parking box.
In Fig.12 the tran~ver~e view en the llne VII~-VqI o~ a
trolley 23 with a vehicle on longitudinal E~lides 4 is sllown
(transverse wheels 17 are not shown).
As a possible version, in Fig.13 Dnd 14, a shuttle 14 is
