An interior automotive safety barrier for protecting taxi and other drivers by separating them from passengers in the rear seat as well as the front right seat. in the preferred embodiment, the device has a rear shield that is fixed to the back of the driver seat, and moves with the seat as it is adjusted to accommodate the comfort needs of various drivers. The rear shield extends from the left interior proximity of the vehicle, behind the driver's seat, toward the center of the vehicle, and then proceeds forward adjacent to the side of this front passenger seat. The device has a side shield which when closed, completes the separation from the rear seat and front seat passengers. The side shield may be opened or removed for better communication with passengers when no threat is present. The shield is less offensive and confining to passengers than traditional front-to-back shields, and permits the driver to carry a front passenger with a moderate amount of protection.

This invention relates to an interior a~~~to~nctive safety barrier that
separates the driver from passengers and other cargo in the rear seat and the
right
s front seat. it is particularly suited to protecting taxicab drivers from
attacks by
passengers.
~A~~CGR~3lJ~L~ ~~ ThIE il~l~Et~TI~P~
The current in~°entio~~ provides an innr~vative solution for
protecting
taxicab drivers. The ~JS department of labor identified cab and limousine

passenger

These problems have been addressed by ~S Patent 4,509,7~~ which
advances the state of the art through a safety arrangement consisting of an
adjustable driver's seat, a side partition fixed to the floor arid top of the
car body, a
bade partition attached to the top of the car body and 3~itting into a
vertical groove in
~ the side shield that allows a certain:. amount: of vertical ad~usvment
relative ~:o the side
shield. Each of the partition members has a hallow-~~rvall construction in the
lover
portion, which is aligned with the upper clear Plexigla s. °~his
introduces a new set of
problems, which the carrel ~t invention solv~a.
l~S Patent ~,5flg,7~~ incorpcarates a seat as part of the arrangement.
~.o The seat has a vertical back, a long side lever to control the recline,
and attachment
mountings for the rear shield. These are non-standard features of typical
automotive
seats, which r~-ieai~s that a special seat is necessary to make the ac
rangement
functional. The embodiment as describes hereinafter care accommodate standard
bucket or split-bench seats found in the foil sire ~mE.rican :yodel cars
typically used
~s fear taxicabs. This contrsbi.~tes to the cost effectiveness of the
solution.
It is ~reil known in the autorr.~otive industry, that passenger knee-to-hip
room has a mayor impact on passenger comfort. Even the loss of one inch in
knee-
to-hip room, has a significant ii~pacf on passenger ~comfoft. The rea~~ shield

described
hereinafter has a sheet metal lov~eer rear shield w~rhich obtains its

the sheet

!t is well known in the a~~t~~motivv industry, that typical autorraotive

angle of inclination most comfortable for drivers of The ~Orrrerioan built

typically used for taxi shields, is approximately 1~ degrees ~~rom vertical.
The actual
angle most comfortable for a specific driver varies rrvith driver preference.

arrangement in t~S ~atenf 4.,~Og, ~'~ situates the driver's seat and the rear

into them in a frontal collision. ~~ patent 4;~09,~88 describes a rear shield,
which is
fixed to the ceiling and to the lower portion of the dr°iver seat. ~~
he shield forms a
rigid barrier due to its attachment at the ~;eiling and the bottorr~ of the
driver seat.
The embodiment as described hereinafter provides energy absorption in accident
situations by piggybacking on the energy :~bsorbir~g tratur es that are
:~esigr~rd into
xo every front automotive car sea's. E~y rnocnting 'the rear shi~:ld to bhe
seat back, and
not rigidly mounting it into the car, the shield exhibits similar forbe-
deflection energy
absorption as the driver seat with r°~o shield. ~orr~all~°, it ~
a ~-ror~tal collision, energy is
absorbed by plastic deforrr~ation og th~ seat structure, grad by the seat
padding, thus
protecting rear passengers. ~lith the re~~r shield installed only to the seat
back,
~ ener°gy is absorbed by the plastic deformation of the seat structure,
and t1 ~e padding
on the shield.
LJS Patent 4,~~?9,788 describes a rear shield releasably attached at the
top of the car body, and at the side shield. l~ihen released, the rear shield
and the
driver seat can be reclined into a comfoa'~le couch duri~ig rest periods. In
pPeferred
2o embodiments of the invention, the driver seat can lie reclined with the
rear shield
attached ~°vithout releasing any fasteners or latches.
!~S latent ,5897,88 descrilaes a side shield that is fixedly attached to
the floor and ceiling of the automobile. This creates a concern should the
driver

wish to egress fr om the vehicle through the right front door, as may be
necessary if
the driver's door becomes ~anrr~ed as in an acciderRt. In one ernbodirr~ent of
the
invention, the side shield is siideably attached to the vehicle floor anew
vehicle roof,
such that it ray be slid rear~rard to open, ~4 latching rr~echanism that is
accessible

an aiternate
embodiment of the invention, vhe side shield is atts, ched ~o the rear shield
with a
quick disconnect fastening arrangerr~3ent. 1°he side shield can be
quickly and easily
rer~roved for driver egress.
