CA 02494522 2005-02-O1
Heat Resistant Ironing Board Cover with Elastic Padding
Technical Field
In order to achieve good results during the ironing process, it is necessary
that during
ironing the ironing board covers and the elastic padding cannot buckle and
form folds
which can be transferred to the article to be ironed. The padding is therefore
often placed
onto the ironing board and the heat resistant cover spread thereon and
fastened to the
ironing board with the help of rubber bands or other bands. This solution not
always
achieves the desired result.
State of the Art
It is therefore known, EP 0 043 700 A1, to use ironing boards in which the
cover is
directly connected with an elastic padding, for example by adhesion, so that
the ironing
cover cannot move relative to the elastic padding. These laminated covers were
then
adhered to the ironing board itself with the use of heat and pressure in order
to create
their connection to the ironing board to prevent a displacement of the whole
ironing
board cover. The detachment of such an ironing board cover, especially its
padding, from
the ironing board for replacement is however very problematic since the
padding is often
strongly bonded to the ironing board.
Materials are therefore suggested for the padding in publication GB 2 116 216
A which
are easier removed from the ironing board, so that an easier replacement of
the ironing
board cover including the padding is possible. However, the contradicting
conditions,
namely the safe bonding of the ironing board cover and its padding to the
ironing board
on the one hand and the possible replacement thereof on the other hand, still
lead to
unsatisfactory results.
Description of the Invention
It is now an object of the invention to construct a heat resistant ironing
board cover with
an elastic padding in such a way that it can be connected to the ironing board
in the

CA 02494522 2005-02-O1
easiest way possible and removed from the ironing board in a simple manner,
when
desired.
This object is achieved in accordance with the invention in a heat resistant
ironing board
cover with elastic padding in such a way that the ironing board cover by way
of its
padding is form fittingly connectable to the ironing board. The ironing board
cover is
constructed such that it can produce a form fitting connection with the
ironing board
itself.
In accordance with the invention, the padding on its underside and the ironing
board on
its top surface are at least partly provided with a nonwoven or fabric layer,
which after
placement of the ironing board cover onto the ironing board overlap and act as
a hook
and loop connection. A nonwoven or fabric layer which is provided with hooks
is
adhered to the ironing board. The whole surface of the ironing board can be
used herefor.
It is however also possible to equip only the edge of the ironing board with
the nonwoven
or fabric layer and to apply in addition transverse strips on the ironing
board. The
padding is provided in the same manner with a nonwoven or fabric layer which
is
equipped with loops. The nonwoven or fabric layer on the ironing board and the
padding
are to overlap completely. When a padding so constructed is placed onto the
correspondingly constructed ironing board, it is possible to immovably connect
the
ironing board cover only by manually pressing and moving thereover.
In order not to reduce the permeability of the ironing board for steam and the
like, the
nonwoven or fabric layer of the ironing board or the padding is perforated.
An equally effective fastening of the heat resistant ironing board cover with
elastic
padding onto an ironing board can also be achieved in that the contour of the
padding
corresponds to the contour of the ironing board and that the padding is
provided with a
circumferential rim with a bulge gripping behind a circumferential edge of the
ironing
board. With a correspondingly adapted construction, such an ironing board
cover can be
2

CA 02494522 2005-02-O1
very easily manually tightened over the ironing board. Since it is held all
along from all
sides, it cannot move on the ironing table.
It has been proven advantageous in the aforementioned solution when the
padding in the
region of the bulge has a material stiffening. This material stiffening can be
achieved by a
special impregnation of the padding in the region of the bulge with a polymer
and
subsequent cross-linking of the polymer.
The thickness of the padding can be adapted to the hook and loop process
carned out and
is generally 0.2 to S cm.
Brief Description of the Drawing
Two examples for carrying out the fastening of the ironing board cover to the
ironing
board are illustrated in the attached drawing.
It shows:
Fig. 1 an ironing board in top view with a nonwoven layer extending all
around;
Fig. 2 the ironing board schematically with an ironing board cover in cross-
section;
Fig. 3 a portion of an ironing board with ironing board cover in section;
Fig. 4 an ironing board with an applied ironing board cover in top view; and
Fig. 5 a cross-section through the ironing board with a cover with snap
fasteners.
Embodiments of the Invention
An ironing board 1 is shown in top view in Figure 1. The ironing board has a
board
surface 2 of stretched metal in generally known manner. A nonwoven layer 4 is
adhered
along the whole edge 3 of the board surface 2, the top surface of which is
provided with
hooks for a hook and loop connection. The contour of the padding 5, see Figure
2, of the
ironing board cover 6 is constructed such that it corresponds to the contour
of the ironing
board 1. Furthermore, it is also provided on its underside 7 with a nonwoven
layer 8
which corresponds in shape to the nonwoven layer 4 on the top surface 9 of the
ironing
board 1. However, this nonwoven layer 8 is provided with loops, so that the
hooks of the
nonwoven layer 4 of the ironing board can hook thereinto.
3

CA 02494522 2005-02-O1
The individual parts are shown pulled apart in Figure 2, so that they are
visible. After
placement of the ironing board cover 6 onto the ironing board 1 and pressing
by hand, a
sufficiently solid connection between the ironing board cover 6 and the
ironing board is
produced. It is however noted that under the ironing board only the stands 10
are
illustrated, all other parts having been omitted.
Another possibility of the form fitting connection of the ironing board cover
6 with the
ironing board 1 is shown in Figures 3 and 4. A contour for the padding 5 is
here provided
as well, which corresponds to the contour of the ironing board 1. However, the
connection of the padding 5 with the ironing board 1 is carried out in that
the padding 5 is
provided with a circumferential rim 13, which has a bulge 12 gripping behind
the
circumferential edge 11 of the ironing board 1. In the region of the bulge 12,
the padding
is provided with a material stiffening which is indicated by the denser
hatching. With this
material stiffening, the seat of the ironing board cover 6 on the ironing
board 1 is
strengthened. In order to achieve the material stiffening, the padding 5 can
be
impregnated in the region of the bulge 12 with a cross-linkable polymer. After
the
impregnation, the polymer is hardened, for example by using heat.
An embodiment of the ironing board 1 is shown in cross-section in Figure 5,
wherein the
ironing board cover 6 is provided all along its edge 20 with snap fasteners
21. The
ironing board cover 6 is pulled onto the ironing board and fastened by way of
the snap
fasteners 21, whereby the latter engage corresponding receptacles 22 on the
underside of
the ironing board 1.
